i stopped watching skate videos when i stopped skateboarding, almost ten years ago now, so it's sweet to get back into it and see all these fresh faces & wild new styles. i used to be so on top of shit i would anticipate every new major release, memorize every trick, ended up getting kinda saturated

flopson, Monday, 10 February 2014 05:44 (four years ago) Permalink

Skate videos now aren't that different in terms of tricks and board shapes and clothing and stuff than when I stopped 15+ years ago but people just do things bigger and combine things in such crazy ways now.

Like when I walk around in public I still think about tricks you could do a perfect world, hitting every bench and staircase and handrail, things that nobody could ever actually do back then. But when I see current videos people seem to be actually doing shit like that.

oh shit that Winkowski bros video! I can't get down w Gou Miyagi, reminds me of that other dude who just does a bunch of parkour than jumps on a skateboard at the end and calls it skateboarding

my lame story is that although i don't skate, i'm good friends with a guy who is well known on the intl SK8 zone and so every time i come home to Missouri i end up hanging out with a bunch of sk8 dudes watching videos and picking up free promotional t-shirts and iphone cases. i tried to skate when i was younger, but i lived in the country with a gravel driveway with a tiny, heavily slanted paved portion. i dutifully purchased the ESPN $10 skateboard at wal-mart and gave it a shot, but it snapped in half on day two and I decided to spend my Long John Silver's $$ on videogames after that.

Karl Malone, Monday, 10 February 2014 18:39 (four years ago) Permalink

I tried to skate when i was younger too but when I broke by arm my mom quickly put the kibosh on what would surely have been a very successful skateboarding career by confiscating my board and refusing to ever give it back. This, however, didn't prevent me from dressing the part for a good chunk of the mid-90s. I still miss JNCOs.

good one

the late great, Monday, 20 April 2015 06:21 (three years ago) Permalink

For some reason I started looking at getting a old school reissue board in the last week - like 9.5" x 32", discernible nose and tail, 60mm wheels, something I can push around on without getting into longboard territory - and then out of nowhere my college roommate who I haven't seen in 4 years texted that he was going to be in town and had stated skating again and we should meet up at the skate park.

I still have my last board which I remember setting up in 1996 and has mostly been used to move heavy objects since I started my first "real" job in July of 1997. He's 41 and I'm 40 and we spent two hours skating and laughing about how winded we were from simple things. I was stoked that I ollied onto a 5" high curb and didn't fall, I landed a couple of (stationary) kickflips, etc. Now I can barely walk.

He told me about this video which got me way more excited than a lot of the ones above due to feeling much more attainable:

If it's any consolation, I've routinely gone through what your second paragraph throughout my mid 20s.

This past march I had my most decisive of "i am decisively going to start skating again" moments. I'd say after maybe the first three sessions I was back to a comfortable state. But then I went away for a month, but I come home tomorrow and hope I don't get lazy and stop.

Having finally visited skate-spot world capital Barcelona in this time, I am def psyched to get out skating and subsequently be disappointed by personal inadequacy very soon!

So it's hard to explain to non-skaters sometimes why we even do this shit. But I found this short video today, sorry if it's been posted here already. But it's got a minimalist take on pool riding, and it rules

never have i been a blue calm sea (collardio gelatinous), Friday, 2 December 2016 04:24 (one year ago) Permalink

it's hard to explain to non-skaters sometimes why we even do this shit

I think about this sometimes. Even though I've spent 99% more time NOT skating in the last 20 years it's still really amazing how much skateboarding influenced my life and affects how I see things.

I've joked with my wife about how stubborn I can be about trying to learn things while she tends to get lazy and quits much sooner. Then I show her some video of a dude trying 20 times to ollie something huge and wrecking himself for the first 19. It was the same for me, just trying something over and over and over and fucking it up repeatedly until you finally get it and you're either super stoked or just irate that it took that long. I've fallen at a restaurant carrying a tray full of dishes and instinctively rolled out of it in a way that prevented injury and kept the tray upright. Skateboarding got me into music, and art, and graphic design, and tattoos, and any number of things that have been huge parts of my life since.

I was walking with the kid and the dog the other day and went by a house with three brothers playing out front; two were goofing around with a basketball and one was wearing a Thrasher shirt and repeatedly trying to ollie, just over and over with little success. I just wanted to yell KEEP DOING THAT IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE at him.
