Does anyone have Elton John's "Are You Ready For Love?"

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Friday, 21 March 2008 21:27 (sixteen years ago) link

No one seems to have mentioned Tears For Fears b-side/side-project "Johnny Panic and The Bible of Dreams". Balearic as fuck.

i picked up the Sueño Latino 1991 Remix 12" and was playing it at home and wifee asked i take it off because it was too "flutey and patooty".

jaxon, Thursday, 3 April 2008 18:45 (sixteen years ago) link

granted i was playing it at 33 instead of 45 and the flutes do start to sound pretty Enigma-y

jaxon, Thursday, 3 April 2008 18:45 (sixteen years ago) link

embrace the enigma

max, Thursday, 3 April 2008 18:49 (sixteen years ago) link

there is definitely a line that i am willing to cross where it comes w/ this stuff that most of my friends arent

max, Thursday, 3 April 2008 18:49 (sixteen years ago) link

i bought the Donna Summers "State of Independence" 7" a long time ago and kinda threw it off to the side not really feeling it, but after hearing it in the context of the rest of these balearic tracks, i really really like it.

Here's an updated version of Max's comp from above with the whole of the DJ History top 25 Balearic in it. Some of the versions of Max's stuff I've upgraded. E2-E4 is in there but as the 5 min edit version.

It all looks a bit of a mess in the folder coz I got bits from here and there but it should all be tagged nicely for itunes etc.

I have a lot to do today so I've done this as displacement activity.

A couple of the tracks in that show up in the wrong order cuz you need to delete the "Album Artist" field in iTunes. And one of them has a (pretty obvious) wrong title. I should've spent a couple more minutes checking it but no biggie.

A couple of songs in the Top 25 are really fucking bad. Ecstacy for the 1st time is powerful stuff is the lesson.

brooce goes balearic (todd terje uses this - nicely - at the end of his RA podcast):

impudent harlot, Friday, 18 April 2008 14:20 (sixteen years ago) link

lol "tunnel of love" is a pretty balearic album already

max, Friday, 18 April 2008 14:37 (sixteen years ago) link

i like that bruce mix a lot, but the rest of that EP is pretty goofball. It also has "balearic" mixes of Neil Young's "Hey Hey My My" and Joanna Newsom "Book Of Right On", which mostly just throw some drum loops on top of the originals.

Michael F Gill, Friday, 18 April 2008 16:41 (sixteen years ago) link

using 'i'm on fire' seemed kinda disappointingly obvious to me (which shows how big a deal context is to lots of this stuff).

deej, Friday, 18 April 2008 16:49 (sixteen years ago) link

especially since chromatics already covered it

deej, Friday, 18 April 2008 17:03 (sixteen years ago) link

id like to think todd terje is a step above deej from the internet

deej, Friday, 18 April 2008 17:03 (sixteen years ago) link

If you go to DJH where he posts tho', he becomes Terje from the internet.

New Aeroplane mix here. Haven't listened yet but the Still Going remix of the Force of Nature track is very very delicious.

willem, Saturday, 19 April 2008 11:34 (sixteen years ago) link

yes! loving that force of nature remix.

impossible to find that linda di franco track mentioned upthread on 12

deej, Friday, 16 May 2008 13:44 (fifteen years ago) link

The Ronny & Renzo mystery mix at DJ History is fabulous. Love their torpid-as-fuck vibe - really stands out I think, especially given how much balearic DJ aesthetics otherwise overlap. But I want to make them to make more of their own tracks. "Big Smack & Flies" and their remix of Mutron's "Alone" are so fantastic viscous and foreboding. They remind me of Depeche Mode's Ultra, in a really good way.

Weirdest, most wonderfully WTF moment of the mix: strangely brilliant bootleg of Kevin Lyttle's "Turn Me On" with Radiohead's "Everything In It's Right Place".

there are a ton of her 12 and 7"s on ebay. but impossible to find her full length in any format. been searching soulseek for months.

that's a pretty typically hollerboard way to do things isnt it?

jaime, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 19:12 (fifteen years ago) link

Have we talked at all about Todd Terje's remix of Jose Gonzales's "Killing For Love"??? Luvvit luvvit luvvit. The most widescreen thing ever.

Tim F, Thursday, 22 May 2008 15:47 (fifteen years ago) link

i mentioned it somewhere (maybe the beardo thread?) ... here is another swedish indie dood remix: bogdan irkuk remix of jens lekman

jaime, Thursday, 22 May 2008 17:39 (fifteen years ago) link

i hit balearic gold the other day. found 2$ 12"s of Mike Francis "Survivor", Dennis Parker "Like an Eagle", Al DiMeola "Sequencer" and one other i forget the name of, but is really good.

jaxon, Thursday, 22 May 2008 18:00 (fifteen years ago) link

bogdan irkuk is making some supremely beautiful shit lately. lovin it.
