Watched the first couple of eps, which were funny, in a sort of understated way. It kind of views as a parody of "Girls."

"arc de triomphe?"
"yeah, i see it as like, two guys butt to butt going down on us and we do oprah hands over them"

this show is A++++

Lol yeah this is def some kind of anti-Girls. They are both more likable and more horrifying than dunham's crew

Yeah I have no complaints thus far. Also Badger and Mantzoukas as the DJs were great to see. Miss Hannibal, though.

Tonight's ep was kinda weak.

I thought it started kinda slow, but once they got to the party it really hit its stride.

o. nate, Thursday, 20 February 2014 22:50 (ten years ago) link

I thought the opposite. Started out okay, just got worse.

Murgatroid, Thursday, 20 February 2014 23:17 (ten years ago) link

The hors d'ouevres bit was definitely tops. The rest, kinda meh.

Abbi is funniest when she goes into her higher more shouty register. I loled when she shouted "not TO-DAY!" and kicked open the bathroom door.

yeah this show is a new favorite for me, the two leads are so great and they have consistently good guest stars.

So funny in the first one when they're drumming and that break dancer puts her hat down.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 15 March 2014 19:37 (ten years ago) link

this show is the best

da croupier, Saturday, 15 March 2014 20:05 (ten years ago) link

Last ep was ok. All the running around seemed a little filler-ish.

Except that running around NYC is what the show usually does…??? Not including that last episode when they were stuck inside Abbi's apartment, of course.

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Saturday, 15 March 2014 20:47 (ten years ago) link

Is that the wedding one? There was a hilarious lazy b-roll montage in that, which was like a shot of a bunch of "I Love NY" t-shirts CUT TO a shot of a bunch of "I Love NY" coffee mugs CUT TO a shot of some other "I Love NY" t-shirts. LOL. Like, oh, this takes place in NYC?

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 15 March 2014 21:01 (ten years ago) link

Sry last ep sucked

calstars, Saturday, 15 March 2014 21:14 (ten years ago) link

I meant multiple jokeless scenes/shots of them literally running around. That was different.

If you visit New York for like 20 minutes you'd realize that a montage of cheap NY souvenirs represents "a place a real New Yorker rarely ventures" and was thus meant to imply that the women were running around in a place that wasn't their comfort zone

perfect puppy (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 16 March 2014 02:48 (ten years ago) link

i think they do a pretty good job of capturing "actual new york"; i lolled at dude being unwilling to go with her to peen station (sic) because it was "gross" but i think that really woulda been more accurately applied to port authority

We hugged with no names exchanged (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 16 March 2014 03:30 (ten years ago) link

Hurricane episode was hilarious. Wedding episode was absolutely terrible. Just the pits. I mean, the gay guy doing drugs and incest jokes weren't funny the first time, but they ran them into the ground so hard I wonder if it was intentional, and even then they still weren't funny. I also wonder if they wrote these two even more cartoonish and obnoxious than our characters characters to make some sort of point, which also wasn't funny.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 18 March 2014 13:44 (ten years ago) link

Oh well, they can't all be winners.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 18 March 2014 13:44 (ten years ago) link

I didn't like the wedding episode as much as i've liked others but I did love ilana howling with despair that abbi touched boobs with another girl.

reddening, Tuesday, 18 March 2014 17:37 (ten years ago) link

There's a video going around of the intro of tonight's episode, where the two apparently do a thing dressed up as Nicki Minaj and "The Rain"-era Missy to "Started From The Bottom" and I'd really like a link to said video that works in Canada. Goddammit.

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Wednesday, 19 March 2014 20:31 (ten years ago) link

Final tableau was beautiful. I haven't cared about TV characters like this since I can remember.

zama roma ding dong (Eric H.), Saturday, 30 March 2019 20:13 (five years ago) link

i didn't always love this show. found there to be some fallow periods and often, as so common in american comedy, their UCBisms could be wearying to me.

thought they ended it fantastically well. genuinely cared about the characters. they went out at the right time and in the right way. chapeau

The end was pretty great.

Right column Leftist (sunny successor), Thursday, 4 April 2019 02:06 (five years ago) link

the show struggled with consistency with some pretty bad episodes but the highs were great and there were enough of them imo . I think they wrapped it up nicely .

nine months pass...

has anybody watched the Ilana Glazer standup special cuz I couldn't finish it and I have thoughts

Οὖτις, Monday, 6 January 2020 21:46 (four years ago) link

no but it came up as an advertisement and the clip they showed was so unfunny i'm unlikely to ever watch it

Mordy, Monday, 6 January 2020 21:47 (four years ago) link

i thought it was pretty damn dire & regretted finishing it

warn me about a lurking rake (One Eye Open), Monday, 6 January 2020 21:51 (four years ago) link

I felt it was sorta like the Jenny Slate thing where it was a person who generally is funny but who hasn't fully figured out how standup sets work.

But the other thing that bothered me was all the gender/sexuality stuff, where she's pledging solidarity (ok, great!) but then also weirdly undermining that solidarity at the same time. And I don't mean that she's a hetero woman that's married to a hetero man. For example, she talks about discussing gender identity with one of her lesbian friends and talking about what they "feel" like ("70% female/30% male") and my reaction was - waitaminit, what is this weird gender normative division she's enthusiastically blathering about? What part of her psyche is she identifying as "male" (apparently the horny, aggressive side)? Isn't characterizing those things as male (and all the other stuff - being domestic, cutesy, etc. as female) part of the whole problem? Isn't the ideal goal to disassociate behaviors we all engage in, to varying degrees, from gender, and just see them as stuff people do (or don't do), regardless of gender identity?

Οὖτις, Monday, 6 January 2020 22:03 (four years ago) link

you shoulda hung in for her big closing bit, which was about how old movies are bad because the women in them talk funny

warn me about a lurking rake (One Eye Open), Monday, 6 January 2020 22:09 (four years ago) link

there were funny lines/bits scattered throughout but yeah this was... not well thought out

Οὖτις, Monday, 6 January 2020 22:12 (four years ago) link

i was rolling my eyes pretty hard at the stage with barbed wire at the lip, as if the edgy truths of this Modern-Day Philosopher are so dangerous that the audience will need protection

warn me about a lurking rake (One Eye Open), Monday, 6 January 2020 22:20 (four years ago) link

agreed that this was almost entirely unfunny. i've seen her do stand-up in shorter form with more success

525,600 gecs (voodoo chili), Monday, 6 January 2020 22:28 (four years ago) link

the bit shakey mentioned is about as far as I got

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Monday, 6 January 2020 22:38 (four years ago) link

this was spectacularly poor.

bidenfan69420 (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 7 January 2020 20:26 (four years ago) link

how muted the laughs are despite the fact that the audience is positively willing for the show to be good and to give the benefit of the doubt is quite jarring. very strong cult of personality vibes

three weeks pass...

Forgive the thread spam, but I wanted to note that this show's 2019 season is nominated in the 2019 ILX TV poll:

If you like this show and you'd like to see it have a good showing in the poll (running in February) all you need to do is submit a ballot including it and your other favorites (4 minimum, 25 maximum, organized by your favorite to least favorite) to forksclovetofu at gmail by end of day today. It'll take five minutes; get to it!

three years pass...

lmao - I came to this thread because Ilana is touring through my neck of the woods and wanted to see if anyone knows what her show consists of, if it's any good, etc. Then I scrolled ever so slightly upthread and saw a unanimous consensus that her standup special is horrible. Anyone have a different opinion? New show more worth seeing? Something other than straight standup? I haven't watched the special and no plan to based on the above commentary but it doesn't surprise me tbh that her whole thing might leave a very different impression without Abby to balance, they have a very precise and possibly delicate dynamic
