hey thank you!
there for a few days next week, so no ron lynch
deli rec is totally what i was after though, i will try to eat the hell out of some eggs there one afternoon
also neighbourhood recommendations also appreciated, from what i understand it is somewhat passé to go to sf & circulate wide-eyed along haight ashbury, let me know if anybody has strong feelings about where i should end up strolling

mustread guy (schlump), Friday, 21 February 2014 18:21 (ten years ago) link

Stroll through the Mission for good eats, coffee, Dolores Park, hipsters, google buses and burritos. Stroll through the upper Haight for Golden Gate Park and Amoeba. Stroll through the Embarcadero for shops/food, boats and tourists. Stroll through Ocean Beach for ocean/beach, and also Land's End hiking. Stroll through North Beach for Italian restaurants, strip clubs and close proximity to Chinatown. Stroll through Union Square for big department stores and tourists.

so is SOMA worse than 3 years ago? If I get out there this summer I'd just go there for the reopened Eagle.

images of war violence and historical smoking (Dr Morbius), Friday, 21 February 2014 20:08 (ten years ago) link

I only ever go to SoMA to look for graffiti, or walking through on my way downtown. There are art galleries and restaurants popping up there now to suit the tech community (and Slim's the music venue is there), but I still wouldn't consider it a great SF end-destination spot.

Dominique, Friday, 21 February 2014 20:24 (ten years ago) link

worse in what way

xp

like Dominique I wouldn't really consider it a neighborhood to stroll through. while it is flat, it's also (usually) deserted apart from homeless/randoms during the day and by obnoxious bridge-and-tunnel idiot clubbers on weekend nights. and it's not like there's a preponderance of cool shops/stores/restaurants (although there is a smattering of leather shops/bars if yr into that kind of thing - the Eagle is cool)

Just went to the Pizza Shop on 24th (it's new!) and it was YUM. Inexpensive NY-style pizza slices. $3 for cheese, $4 for others.

Is that the one right next to the Bart station that was gonna have a beer garden but neighbors complained?

btw I will be at Dolores Park from 2-4 today

No, it's at 24th and Folsom. I'm doing a one on one day with Owen, but next time for sure. I let K know in case she and Ben want to meet you guys.

schwantz, Saturday, 22 February 2014 20:10 (ten years ago) link

there are some great restaurants and bars in SOMA - i work over there, so i end up hanging out in that neighborhood more than i otherwise probably would have. it's not just hip spots for techies.

eh mec, elle est ou ma caisse? (ytth), Monday, 24 February 2014 04:21 (ten years ago) link

Meanwhile in the 'tech or housing or not or both or' continuing saga, this detail:

Another man who didn't want to give his name, but said he was from the dot-com boom and called himself "part of the new upper class of Silicon Valley," encouraged tech employees to "acknowledge our privilege" and "listen to people's stories of eviction instead of looking at our phones." He then read from a poem that said "The Internet is killing us."

it's not anti-"techie," it's anti-prick. based on her posts about the incident and eager engagement with any and all media around the she's certainly trying to present herself as an innocent victim of anti-tech hooligans but ime if you act like an ass in molotov's someone's going to invite you to mind your manners.

resulting post (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 26 February 2014 23:41 (ten years ago) link

tbh Molotov's is exactly the kind of joint I would expect this to happen in. Zeitgeist too.

Despite the attack, Slocum is still a dedicated Glass user -- or, in her own words, a "#glasshead."

Raiding SROs and selling the seized property is pretty ugly.

I'm a regular at Molotov's and I heard accounts from fellow regulars yesterday (also recounted to a SFPD sergeant) which lead me to believe that she was both very drunk and very annoying and far from blameless. She was repeatedly asked to not film and not behave like a drunken fool but she went ahead and did it anyhow. I just missed this by about 30 minutes 'cause I stopped in after dinner. Her bf or male escort also beat someone up over this, so hate crime, my ass.

Also Esta Noche getting the boot right after appearing on 'Looking' is kind of poignant.

tbh when I saw that quote of a patron re: "behoove her to have manners" I totally thought it was you

too bad about Esta Noche, i will miss their giant margaritas on my visits

x-post Yeah we have a water filter and glasses here at our office (and even a dishwasher!) but we keep ordering and using bottles of water! I gotta put a stop to it.

schwantz, Wednesday, 5 March 2014 21:32 (ten years ago) link

it's just so weird to act like we are living in a third world country that doesn't have clean water, especially in SF where we have, like, the cleanest fucking water in the country straight from Hetch Hetchy

I keep telling everyone at work that the bottled water we have for meetings is not an upgrade from our water purifier (w/UVA).

A specialist in foolery (Michael White), Wednesday, 5 March 2014 21:50 (ten years ago) link

we have some ridiculous water purifier thing that keeps it refrigerated and carbonates it (if you want). it's like a robot. it is also ridiculous, but it's carbon footprint is probably smaller than monthly carts of water bottles

did I mention it's ridiculous

Want the carbonator!
