Abbi is funniest when she goes into her higher more shouty register. I loled when she shouted "not TO-DAY!" and kicked open the bathroom door.

Highlight after highlight tonight, from the nude hula-hoop dancer to the improv group scene.

Murgatroid, Thursday, 27 February 2014 06:41 (ten years ago) link

yeah this show is a new favorite for me, the two leads are so great and they have consistently good guest stars.

reddening, Thursday, 27 February 2014 07:03 (ten years ago) link

Fuck I love this show. Also I hope Hannibal is on this forever.

My wife is endlessly grateful for me introducing her to this. This is right up her alley. We both cracked up when Rafi and Badger showed up last week.

Hannibal Buress was on fire tonight.

Murgatroid, Thursday, 13 March 2014 05:59 (ten years ago) link

I enjoyed the cornucopia of sight gags in last night's ep.

o. nate, Thursday, 13 March 2014 19:15 (ten years ago) link

renewed for a second season!

great news

So funny in the first one when they're drumming and that break dancer puts her hat down.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 15 March 2014 19:37 (ten years ago) link

this show is the best

da croupier, Saturday, 15 March 2014 20:05 (ten years ago) link

Last ep was ok. All the running around seemed a little filler-ish.

Except that running around NYC is what the show usually does…??? Not including that last episode when they were stuck inside Abbi's apartment, of course.

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Saturday, 15 March 2014 20:47 (ten years ago) link

Is that the wedding one? There was a hilarious lazy b-roll montage in that, which was like a shot of a bunch of "I Love NY" t-shirts CUT TO a shot of a bunch of "I Love NY" coffee mugs CUT TO a shot of some other "I Love NY" t-shirts. LOL. Like, oh, this takes place in NYC?

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 15 March 2014 21:01 (ten years ago) link

Sry last ep sucked

calstars, Saturday, 15 March 2014 21:14 (ten years ago) link

I meant multiple jokeless scenes/shots of them literally running around. That was different.

If you visit New York for like 20 minutes you'd realize that a montage of cheap NY souvenirs represents "a place a real New Yorker rarely ventures" and was thus meant to imply that the women were running around in a place that wasn't their comfort zone

perfect puppy (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 16 March 2014 02:48 (ten years ago) link

i think they do a pretty good job of capturing "actual new york"; i lolled at dude being unwilling to go with her to peen station (sic) because it was "gross" but i think that really woulda been more accurately applied to port authority

We hugged with no names exchanged (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 16 March 2014 03:30 (ten years ago) link

Hurricane episode was hilarious. Wedding episode was absolutely terrible. Just the pits. I mean, the gay guy doing drugs and incest jokes weren't funny the first time, but they ran them into the ground so hard I wonder if it was intentional, and even then they still weren't funny. I also wonder if they wrote these two even more cartoonish and obnoxious than our characters characters to make some sort of point, which also wasn't funny.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 18 March 2014 13:44 (ten years ago) link

Oh well, they can't all be winners.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 18 March 2014 13:44 (ten years ago) link

I didn't like the wedding episode as much as i've liked others but I did love ilana howling with despair that abbi touched boobs with another girl.

reddening, Tuesday, 18 March 2014 17:37 (ten years ago) link

There's a video going around of the intro of tonight's episode, where the two apparently do a thing dressed up as Nicki Minaj and "The Rain"-era Missy to "Started From The Bottom" and I'd really like a link to said video that works in Canada. Goddammit.

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Wednesday, 19 March 2014 20:31 (ten years ago) link

Found it on YouTube.

Kinda surprised how flat Amy Sedaris' scenes felt on tonight's episode. I'm afraid to revisit Strangers with Candy in case it hasn't aged well.

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Thursday, 20 March 2014 05:03 (ten years ago) link

does that clip really have anything to do with nicki minaj at all?

I agree - she didn't quite click for some reason. Having watched SWC recently it still holds up for me, though!

brains hangin (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 20 March 2014 08:33 (ten years ago) link

just discovered this show the other day and already it's my favourite thing

all is fair in love and womp (monotony), Thursday, 20 March 2014 10:55 (ten years ago) link

i thought the joek abt the racist dating site thing fell flat, was too idk hack sitcom bait-and-switch-y or something, but the rest of this ep was p good. this show is v good, well done all involved.

johnny crunch, Thursday, 20 March 2014 14:18 (ten years ago) link

I thought that joke would've been better if the racism was more subtle dog-whistle style. Like obv that it was racist but not so blatant and cartoony. Sedaris was a little over the top too but generally I thought the episode was killer.

dan selzer, Thursday, 20 March 2014 14:25 (ten years ago) link

SWC really does hold up. Haven't seen this new BC ep yet tho.

I remember watching the movie in the theater and my friends and I were the only people in there besides a couple who I knew.

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Thursday, 20 March 2014 15:56 (ten years ago) link

I guess I'm not as picky but all the episodes of this show so far have been good to great IMO. Top 2 were probably the package delivery episode and the hurricane episode.

o. nate, Thursday, 20 March 2014 20:13 (ten years ago) link

Yeah I love this show and have very few, very minor complaints.

brains hangin (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 20 March 2014 20:18 (ten years ago) link

agreed

We hugged with no names exchanged (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 20 March 2014 20:41 (ten years ago) link

Oh it's all good, except for the wedding ep, which is almost all bad, strangely enough. My wife loves this. She said it's like Workaholics "but with more girl stuff."

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 20 March 2014 20:45 (ten years ago) link

Also way funnier than Workaholics this season.

Forgive the thread spam, but I wanted to note that this show's 2019 season is nominated in the 2019 ILX TV poll:

If you like this show and you'd like to see it have a good showing in the poll (running in February) all you need to do is submit a ballot including it and your other favorites (4 minimum, 25 maximum, organized by your favorite to least favorite) to forksclovetofu at gmail by end of day today. It'll take five minutes; get to it!

three years pass...

lmao - I came to this thread because Ilana is touring through my neck of the woods and wanted to see if anyone knows what her show consists of, if it's any good, etc. Then I scrolled ever so slightly upthread and saw a unanimous consensus that her standup special is horrible. Anyone have a different opinion? New show more worth seeing? Something other than straight standup? I haven't watched the special and no plan to based on the above commentary but it doesn't surprise me tbh that her whole thing might leave a very different impression without Abby to balance, they have a very precise and possibly delicate dynamic
