I dunno if "Trick, I am not Bill Withers. Do not lean on me, okay?" is a real Katt Williams line or not, but I'm still laughing about that one.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 9 March 2014 05:52 (ten years ago) link

That MRA sketch was a disaster.

Murgatroid, Sunday, 9 March 2014 06:07 (ten years ago) link

thought it was great thru update, mooney short the only thing i liked after that. dunham was awesome. sometimes i wonder if dvr was invented specifically to ffwd thru the music act on snl.

balls, Sunday, 9 March 2014 06:53 (ten years ago) link

He wasn't sweating enough to do a real good Katt Williams.

DonkeyTeeth, Sunday, 9 March 2014 06:55 (ten years ago) link

I don't hate Colin Jost (I think). He's the guy who created Drunk Uncle with Moynihan after all. But he really has no business being on camera, much less co-anchoring Update. Cecily's got this, Lorne.

Ooh Child short was fun. I've already forgotten most of the rest of it, except Moynihan as the older brother in the tween girl show sketch was gold.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 9 March 2014 07:08 (ten years ago) link

Oh right, the monologue...Kate McKinnon playing an old lady is always a good time.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 9 March 2014 07:09 (ten years ago) link

Is it wrong of me to wish Kate McKinnon would do her Russian woman again?

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Sunday, 9 March 2014 07:13 (ten years ago) link

I don't understand the National. Like I never heard of them and suddenly it seems like everyone likes them. And they sound like mature music for Interpol fans?

brains hangin (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Sunday, 9 March 2014 08:54 (ten years ago) link

National frontman is totally Thom Yorke cosplaying as Walter White amirite

I'm a dais, I'm a dais (zero of the signified), Sunday, 9 March 2014 09:08 (ten years ago) link

Or Warren Zevon with no sense of humor.

brains hangin (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Sunday, 9 March 2014 09:12 (ten years ago) link

Why would anyone put a band that boring on national tv?

perfect puppy (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 9 March 2014 21:51 (ten years ago) link

Also, Weekend Update has turned into an absolute shitshow

perfect puppy (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 9 March 2014 21:51 (ten years ago) link

eve sketch was pretty good and really killer olivia pope impersonation

eric banana (s.clover), Sunday, 9 March 2014 22:36 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, Seth Meyers' Weekend Update persona might have been "smug prick" but that's preferable to the blank slate that is Colin Jost's nothingness.

Murgatroid, Sunday, 9 March 2014 22:46 (ten years ago) link

yeah zameer's olivia pope was great

balls, Sunday, 9 March 2014 23:25 (ten years ago) link

pretty much hated this episode. ugh, Parsons' was so much better.

Neanderthal, Monday, 10 March 2014 03:18 (ten years ago) link

In both episodes there were sketches that started funny and then just ran too long

curmudgeon, Monday, 10 March 2014 17:25 (ten years ago) link

Kate McKinnon playing an old lady is always a good time

But yes to this

curmudgeon, Monday, 10 March 2014 17:26 (ten years ago) link

It's been fun seeing all the "men's rights" men come out of the woodwork to complain about the jewelry party sketch.

But just a moment ago, I saw a story about how SNL and Lena Dunham "mocked" the bible in the Garden of Eden sketch.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 10 March 2014 17:28 (ten years ago) link

I thought the Parsons episode was terrible and this one was pretty good, though I didn't see the end of the Parsons due to DVR not catching it running late. Garden of Eden was great though it helps to be a Girls fan. I thought jewelry party sketch was great, despite of/because of Cecily's accent. I wonder if whoever wrote that watched 90 Day Fiance on TLC that ran recently. I'm thinking yes. I really loved the rap show skit and it's driving me nuts because I can't find the original video that I'm sure fed that...some like 40 minute video of a downtown NYC 80s artist woman doing this "jazzy" rap that sounds pretty much exactly like what they were doing and is oh so terrible. Anybody know what I'm talking about? Loved the Will Smith skit.

dan selzer, Monday, 10 March 2014 20:01 (ten years ago) link

"My flute amp!"

The intro to "What are you even doing?" sounded a lot like "Me Plus One" by Annie.

Michael F Gill, Monday, 10 March 2014 20:13 (ten years ago) link

apple-shaming was a great gag i thought

eric banana (s.clover), Tuesday, 11 March 2014 17:36 (ten years ago) link

Cecily's accent in that sketch

Have seen complaints that there are no Latino women on the show

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 12 March 2014 14:52 (ten years ago) link

There have never been any. And yet Latin@ accents are a common trope (see: Fred Armisen's recurring talk show/frequent dancing sketch).

rhyme heals all goons (m bison), Wednesday, 12 March 2014 14:54 (ten years ago) link

See also: Tracy Morgan's Dominican Lou; Kate MacKinnon's Penelope Cruz; Vanessa Bayer's maid in Californians.

rhyme heals all goons (m bison), Wednesday, 12 March 2014 14:56 (ten years ago) link

Armisen has some Venezuelan roots

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 12 March 2014 15:09 (ten years ago) link

but his castmates do not.

rhyme heals all goons (m bison), Wednesday, 12 March 2014 15:10 (ten years ago) link

snl: hey can we do some latin@ comedy accents?
fred: i am half-venezuelan, so yes.
snl: SIMONNNNNN

two weeks pass...

I was excited to watch Louis CK tonight, but aside from a few brief moments it was a lackluster show, really disappointing.

JacobSanders, Sunday, 30 March 2014 05:39 (ten years ago) link

Why can't Snl find decent musical acts.

JacobSanders, Sunday, 30 March 2014 05:40 (ten years ago) link

Yeah, this week was a huge dud.

And should I complain about Colin Jost again? I'm going to anyway. That guy is a piece of white bread soaked in toilet water.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 30 March 2014 05:51 (ten years ago) link

I actually didn't mind this week's episode. Maybe my expectations were low. Also, Sam Smith was great.

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Sunday, 30 March 2014 05:53 (ten years ago) link

liked the weird pajamas one

Insane Prince of False Binaries (Gukbe), Sunday, 30 March 2014 06:04 (ten years ago) link

and i did laugh a bit at the fitzpatrick for student president thing.

Seriously, he's gotta go. He looks like he knows he's not supposed to be on TV. No reason Strong can't do Update solo.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 30 March 2014 16:59 (ten years ago) link

Sam Smith sounded good, but that song is totally a slowed down version of "won't back down" by tom petty

Belgian Flanders Albums Chart (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 31 March 2014 02:55 (ten years ago) link

i skipped the sketch where they were about to sing mr big stuff and the one where vanessa bayer looked like stefanie powers in hart to hart for some reason but other than a kinda weirdly weak and short weekend update (i'm not sold on jost yet but i'm not nearly as FUCK THIS GUY as you guys) i enjoyed every sketch this week. there were several lines during the rom com sketch at the end that killed me, i actually immediately watched it again after it was over.

balls, Monday, 31 March 2014 03:08 (ten years ago) link

I'm surprised Sam Smith didn't do "Money On My Mind". Maybe even he realized how shrill and annoying the chorus is.

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Monday, 31 March 2014 04:18 (ten years ago) link

I think I laughed harder at the baby / boss sketch than anything on the show in 20 years; just pure visceral sight-gag laughs. Just slaughtered me.

Walter Galt, Monday, 31 March 2014 11:46 (ten years ago) link

I thought that and Black Jeopardy and Dyke & Fats were pretty great. And Mooney's film was probably his best yet.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 31 March 2014 14:00 (ten years ago) link

hated the boss piece the same way I hated Mr Peepers back in the day.

Neanderthal, Monday, 31 March 2014 14:10 (ten years ago) link

Baby boss sketch has been funnier in the past. Some of the timing was off on this one, but when Aidy got cake in the face a second time I lol'ed.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 31 March 2014 15:11 (ten years ago) link

And Mooney's film was probably his best yet.

Yeah, this was probably first week I didn't hate him.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 31 March 2014 15:11 (ten years ago) link

i enjoyed it though i prefer the more absurdist things he does w/ beck bennett than the spot on takes on amateur videos he's done. beck bennett's seems to have established himself the most of the new ppl, other than him and mooney's shorts the main effect of the new ppl has been to make the still pretty damn new ppl seem like old hands. like it doesn't feel like this is only cecily strong's second season. nasim feels like from a totally different era, like the last season david spade was still there, i'm curious what percentage of her appearances this season have been as either a child or kim kardashian.

balls, Monday, 31 March 2014 15:28 (ten years ago) link

It feels like Nasim Pedrad has hit a wall.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 31 March 2014 15:40 (ten years ago) link

well she was gonna be on that mulaney sitcom and then ended up back here and like i think literally all she's had is kardashian appearances and the occasional sketch where she plays a kid.

balls, Monday, 31 March 2014 15:44 (ten years ago) link

And Arianna Huffington, but that bit won't work so well without Meyers. Can't imagine Jost riffing with her (or doing it well, at least).

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 31 March 2014 15:46 (ten years ago) link

I like Nasim when she does characters but not her impersonations.

dan selzer, Monday, 31 March 2014 23:38 (ten years ago) link

I like Nasim but I feel like they blew it when they kept her and dropped Jenny Slate. Who has done some great stuff on Kroll Show lately.

Des Esseintes in Walmart (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 03:10 (ten years ago) link

I loved Slate on the finale of Kroll, where she played both Liz and her niece.
