I am pretty sure those vans didn't detect anything. Scientifically I'm not even sure it could work in theory. They just go round knocking on doors of houses that don't have licenses.

I've heard the "I don't read fiction" thing from a few people. these people actually do seem to read a lot, it's just all non fiction.

haven't heard "I only watch documentaries" film equivalent.

it's actually a pretty good lyric in that context, a sly detournement on the phrase "i don't even own a tv", which was common in the 90s. so when the asshole singer says it, it's not meant to be a humblebrag or w/e, it's talking about some bizarro world where TVs actually have enslaved humans. *tokes*

brimstead, Wednesday, 2 April 2014 03:04 (ten years ago) link

i guess thread has taught me that the annoying thing about "IDEOATV" is that 99% of the time this response is provoked it happens in response to some annoying coworker or rando at a party talking about a tv show, which is something that 100% of all people with coworkers/randos deal with because even people who own TVs do not watch every show on it. people who try to shame you for not watching parks and rec are annoying even to those who watch other tv programs. but saying "IDEOATV" is like implying that every single person with a tv is conspiring to shame you when really annoying people are just really into shaming everyone. of course it's a totally rational and sensical thing to say (if someone recommends an app or something for my phone i will say "look at my phone this is not a smartphone" but i will be visibly bummed about my shitty phone :[ ) but it often comes off as "i don't *E*V*E*N* own a tv you unspectacular norm" key word "*E*V*E*N*" like it doesn't fucking matter barely anyone watches P+R anyway

tho i'm assuming this is different in stalinist england where there are only 4 channels of government-mandated programming and all they show are doctor who and east tenders

I guess it's only really since the birth of my daughter that I had even really considered our not having a tv as an explicit lifestyle choice, but thinking about it i guess it has now become more of a conscious decision than it was originally.

I don't know if that has perhaps subtly changed my tone when it comes each time to answering this tv question, and it can be easy to get tone wrong - especially on certain subjects!

My boring experience: Used to watch a bit more TV when I cohabited with my partner but since financial circumstances meant we had to live apart I generally don't watch it, for a number of reasons.
First of all my living room is massively uncomfy to sit in. Our sofas are horrible, my housemate and his g/f are always in there and making it messy and it's just not a very nice place to be. Our aerial is rubbish too so even if I do try and watch something it's usually peppered by digital interruption.
I still watch a few shows though - mostly via the internet, so I like having the choice of what I'm viewing.
It's easy to be snobby about TV watchers, the kind of people who come home and spend hours each night just vegging out to whatever's on, but I try not to be that person because I waste an awful lot of time doing other things, surfing the net, listening to music and other stuff that wouldn't be considered directly productive. Over the years I've tried to cultivate a less passive lifestyle in my evenings, writing when I get home, making music, exercising etc. Right now it would destroy me to come home from work and just watch pre-programmed telly, but I can see why people do it.
Since I stopped watching TV as much, I'm always shocked at how overblown and obvious a lot of stuff is - particularly TV adverts which I genuinely find depressingly showy and fascinatingly manipulative at the same time. It's something I think people get desensitised to after a while, but when I'm not exposed to it, it really does freak me out quite a lot.

lots of adverbs about adverts in that last post. apologies.

the self-satisfied declarations of IDEOATV remind me of a dude I knew back in 1995 who used to pop into discussions of the OJ trial just to say, "What are you talking about? OJ Simpson? I've never even heard of him."

I'm glad it's not just me! Every time I see the thread on New Answers...

My parents just watch TV all evening more or less regardless of what's on. I just refresh ILX all evening regardless of what's on. We will never understand each other, to the point of thinking the other preference is wasteful, moronic and rude (certainly I know they feel that way about me looking at my phone or the computer, even if they're just watching TV, and I kind of feel the same about snoring in front of News 24 from 6pm until bedtime every evening), even though it's basically the same thing.

I realised I was a bit out of touch when I picked up a TV for free off the street and plugged the RF cable into the back that I presume is connected from my wall to an aerial on the roof, only to remember that they don't even broadcast analog TV any more.

mirostones, Thursday, 10 April 2014 07:50 (ten years ago) link

yes you are out of touch

conrad, Thursday, 10 April 2014 09:12 (ten years ago) link

tbh I'd forgotten about that as well, and we've had a TV the whole time, but we have no analog aerial in our flat, just a Sky dish.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 10 April 2014 10:25 (ten years ago) link

digital telly can come thru your analogue aerial

conrad, Thursday, 10 April 2014 10:34 (ten years ago) link

but you need a digital receiver for it

Occurred to me the other day that "I don't even OWN a microwave! It would just sit in the corner of the kitchen doing nothing!" has now superseded IDEOATV! as a signifier of bourgie smuggery among some of my acquaintances.

Stevie T, Thursday, 10 April 2014 11:51 (ten years ago) link

is there analogue for microwaves for what sopranos/wire/mad men/breaking bad/true detective are to the telly?

hot pockets iirc

conrad, Thursday, 10 April 2014 13:28 (ten years ago) link

The landlord offered me a microwave but I had to turn it down, not out of smuggery but rather because the kitchenette in my bedsit has so little surface area that I would have no room left to prepare food :(

mirostones, Thursday, 10 April 2014 13:40 (ten years ago) link

Most new TVs are digital ready so you can just plug in the rf rabbit ears and get HD broadcast. Best HD around! Better quality than most cable or satellite
