architects and graphics designers are a structurally-obsessed people

most of them understand the diff between utility and affectation, though, and classify most watches accordingly

I wear this watch in black and it starts conversations with architects and graphic designers everywhere I go.

you couldn't really pull to refresh properly because the app clearly hadn't been optimized

they're missing a few

markers, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 14:42 (ten years ago) link

i really think the restriction of screen sizes was something that Apple got right - hate that they're going in the other direction now

Nhex, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 14:44 (ten years ago) link

they really have no choice, like its cool and tidy to have just an iphone and an ipad but real world usage demands at least couple more sizes, on the other hand all those samsung sizes is a big reason why no one wants to develop for android

lag∞n, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 14:48 (ten years ago) link

well, they're dropping the 4 and 4s eventually

markers, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 14:49 (ten years ago) link

which leaves them with 5/5s and one or two others depending on what they launch this fall

markers, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 14:49 (ten years ago) link

and two ipads

markers, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 14:50 (ten years ago) link

not the same thing

markers, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 14:50 (ten years ago) link

well, perhaps an "ipad pro" at some point too

markers, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 14:50 (ten years ago) link

and an iwatch

markers, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 14:50 (ten years ago) link

and an apple tv

markers, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 14:50 (ten years ago) link

and all the macs

markers, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 14:50 (ten years ago) link

FWIW I see a lot more big 5-6"+ phones over here in East Asia than I do iPhones now

, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 14:52 (ten years ago) link

Yeah - it's gonna be legacy 4/4S, 5/5S, theoretically two new sizes for 6 (though one of them might just be 5 size), and the iPad sizes do matter since most apps are universal now and it bloats up the app size as well. (+possible App Store for iWatch)

I guess I should be thankful App Store is separate for Mac and AppleTV

Nhex, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 14:53 (ten years ago) link

I see how the bigger, nicer screens will draw the public but still, screw all those other app stores

Nhex, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 14:54 (ten years ago) link

How many resolutions are iOS developers gonna have to do now

, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 14:55 (ten years ago) link

Will the 5.5" iPhone still be RETINA

yeah especially for people that its their only or primary or only non work device the phablet is key

lag∞n, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 14:57 (ten years ago) link

actually, i think it'll probably autoscale yr shit

markers, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 14:58 (ten years ago) link

like, unless i'm wrong, which i may be, it already sort of does that

markers, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 14:58 (ten years ago) link

by the way, if you care abt this stuff and don't mind this isn't about ios: http://vimeo.com/91688685

markers, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 14:59 (ten years ago) link

If iOS achieves resolution independence or w/e before OSX I'm gonna murder Steve Cook

, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 14:59 (ten years ago) link

Actually I just want all the Chinese characters to be bigger and everything else can go fuck right off to hell

, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 14:59 (ten years ago) link

iPad does that, but i don't think it works with the various phone proportions (4 > 5 > 6) and they have to be coded for

Nhex, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 14:59 (ten years ago) link

I saw a guy on the street wearing a shirt that just said 'STEVE JOBS' and I really wanted one :(

, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 15:00 (ten years ago) link

the only people who care about os x are in this thread

markers, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 15:00 (ten years ago) link

the thing is if you just use bigger pixels on a bigger iphone youre kinda ignoring the whole point of a bigger device, like it needs to provide actually more area to do stuff not just magnify things, also as dan said bigger pixels would break the retina

lag∞n, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 15:01 (ten years ago) link

resolution independence is also helped when at least you know screens will have the same proportions, if not density (16:9, 16:10 etc) but i feel like it's just a pipe dream nobody at Apple (or anywhere for that matter) seems to care about right now. (but I care!)

Nhex, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 15:01 (ten years ago) link

what qualifies as a "retina display" for apple is pretty clear

markers, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 15:02 (ten years ago) link

you hold the device X inches away from your face, if you can't see pixels, it's retina

markers, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 15:02 (ten years ago) link

and the length varies between devices because apparently you hold your ipad further away or something

markers, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 15:02 (ten years ago) link

When I start my chillwave band our name will be STEVE JOBS

, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 15:04 (ten years ago) link

yeah so if the current iphone retina is tuned for its size if u make it bigger its no longer retina xp

lag∞n, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 15:04 (ten years ago) link

band name shd 100% be STEVE JOB tho

lag∞n, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 15:04 (ten years ago) link

wasn't there a rumor they were actually going to increase the ppi for the new devices?

markers, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 15:04 (ten years ago) link

Damn that was a good suggestion. You wanna be in this band

, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 15:05 (ten years ago) link

Actually I think resolution independence means a different thing than unifying all the iOS resizes

Before I get corrected

, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 15:17 (ten years ago) link

I kinda wonder if the larger iPhones are gonna have better battery life since they can stick in bigger batteries now. I wonder how much more power the larger displays draw

, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 15:18 (ten years ago) link

resolution independence is never gonna happen. Retina double-sizing does what Apple wants.

iOS 7 does have much better auto-layout stuff, but even so if they change the aspect ratio a lot of shit's going to break. Unless they put letterboxing on old-style apps, maybe?
