the thing is twitters stuff isnt working that good recently, their adoption rate has slowed a lot, like instagram is about to pass it in users

lag∞n, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 14:30 (ten years ago) link

Did they roll out that change where if you're on a persons profile the font size of the tweet changes accordig to how many retweets and favs they had

That fucking sucked

, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 14:37 (ten years ago) link

whaaa? so if you go to Drake's page or whatever all the font would be 140px?

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 14:38 (ten years ago) link

then you go to your grandma's profile and everything is in 2pt font

poor grandma can't even read her own profile at that point

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 14:38 (ten years ago) link

Oh I didn't know that bt did just sign up to Instagram today, whoa

my grandmas were born in 1883 and 1901, a fact for which I envy them.

Hah Karl

This is what I'm talking about although when I first started seeing it there were like 4 different font sizes & I would always have to open a favorite user's profile in incognito mode to get rid of it

Looks like they rolled it out to everyone now though

, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 15:05 (ten years ago) link

the hilarious thing about that "how to get to the new profile" article on Techcrunch is that I've had a gigantic banner ad on my browser for at least the past week that said "CLICK HERE TO TRY THE NEW PROFILE"

Wahaca Flocka Flame (DJP), Wednesday, 23 April 2014 15:11 (ten years ago) link

man that big text thing for clicks is stupid

waterbabies (waterface), Wednesday, 23 April 2014 15:15 (ten years ago) link

its a totally standard way to highlight something like do u think headlines in a newspaper shd all be the same size, if it was directly proportional to likes or whatever it wld be dumb but its just a way to give a few popular tweets more visual prominence, u cld argue its against the twitter cascade ethos but it def makes more sense than the lol big banner image

lag∞n, Wednesday, 23 April 2014 15:32 (ten years ago) link

yeah but its stupid

waterbabies (waterface), Wednesday, 23 April 2014 15:33 (ten years ago) link

i can see how pop it is vis a vis RT's and favstars

My position is that both the big banner image and the cascaded tweet font size both suck

Thank you very much for your time ladies and gentlemen

xposts
i'd be all for it if more retweets/favorites meant that something was actually better. but most of the time the popularity of a tweet has nothing to do with the quality of it. some celebrity can say "hot dogs" and it'll get a billion retweets, and on a smaller scale, someone with 5,000 followers can post the exact same link and garner way more interest than someone with 50 followers. the system is already tilted to reward people who are already well known, and making popular people's posts larger just tips the scale in that direction even more. it would be like if big corporations somehow had to pay less in taxes than smaller businesses and people...oh wait

what is needed is a lone employee at twitter who looks at every tweet and then gives it a quality rating from 1-10

in a strange twist, twitter chooses ken jennings for the job and he only gives 10s to really boring things
