bonus non-gigantic Lenin statue

soref, Friday, 25 April 2014 18:36 (ten years ago) link

seems like genghis khan is finished terrorizing everyone & is content to survey his homeland for eternity. this is still uncannily huge though

this is amazing

there's something about the motherland calls that's spooky, maybe because it's also commemorating a battle where a million people died.

Put 100+ hours into dark souls, about to pick this up next Wednesday (after I sit for an actuary exam which has been ruining my life the last couple months)

Isn't it also positioned directly on top of the mass grave of those dead? It's an amazing statue and def my vote

weird in a way that so many of these are situated near pylons. seems to add another level of grotesque horror.

that ushiku daibutsu buddha seems especially jarring.

so many great things posted that I've missed, some statues have a v intense energy about them & depending on which angle you see them from, it can change. I don't know what the airavata is but it is pretty hectic

I've never been there but as far as I can tell Denver airport was built to fuck with people who think the illuminati is real. There is a popular conspiracy theory that it's the HQ of the New World Order, largely because of the bizarre architecture and decor.

idk if anyone itt is into these statues from a religious pov, it seems alien to me but clearly lots of people flock to them. curious how something can be a focus of religious attention as well as a spectacle. found this pic of what is apparently a buddhist temple in a theme park in ho chi minh city, vietnam, seems notable

hanuman is a v charismatic deity, I love how he avoids monkey stereotypes & is always show as noble, devoted & heroic. also love the physiques on hindu statues in general. otoh he is armed & this statue is needlessly huge

the three-sided guanyin of the south sea of china is the most excellent seaside statue imo

http://www.chinatourguide.com/china_photos/sanya/attractions/nanshan_temple_buddha.jpg

i like the idea of "the observer of all the cries in the world" - seems less authoritarian than some statues

ooooh i like that one too

redwoods paul bunyan is pretty cool. everyone loves to touch babe's balls. the trees of mystery thing there remains a mystery to me b/c i do not want to spend the money

have to say though i am not very terrified by any statue on flatlands, you need some topography or a huge platform or somehting to bring the real terror
