You have to walk up 272 steps to get to the cave temples behind Lord Murugan's head

I always like the gentle reminders the Soviets left across the Axis countries about who won the war:

Giant naked cyclops next to E17 motorway in Belgium (you can see the motorway on the right in the second picture) - it has been there before, about 2 years ago, but was set alight then. Has now been put back but the owner of the forklift company, who is an art lover who did this because he wants to promote art in his industrial zone, is getting threatening letters again.

Fuck every one of these statues.

And yes, it's beautiful, but especially this one.

I can't even deal with this thing outside an RV park that used to be a novelty stop sign.

to be clear I love all the statues here & don't want anyone to think I was denigrating their contributions. anyway I think the most actually terrifying might have to be either to moai or the sphinx, on the grounds that having outlasted the systems of belief which led to their construction, they have this unknowable ghostly power.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-718a9zXxgNY/UOiN5JnED8I/AAAAAAAAASg/rNvg6myLLMc/s1600/Moai-Statues-Easter-Island-1.jpeg

apparently the moai originally had eyes. can't decide if that makes them more or less creepy. prob more creepy.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_wAMI_vZQpUo/TGRgVCk4gBI/AAAAAAAAAXA/f9Cnn0u2nag/s320/moai_eyes.jpg

I can understand why you might want to topple them

http://31.media.tumblr.com/79f82a9afd47884a9d12a9a83fa32ef9/tumblr_mvqlx0LS031sh962to1_500.jpg

the arabs call the sphinx 'father of dread' which seems on point. imagining it lurking under the sand for vast periods of time is unsettling.

I get very uncomfortable just looking at these fuckers. It's weird and I don't know why. I don't have a strong feeling toward trees, rocks or buildings in the same way.

But shit like this ... ughhh

Feeling you on the discomfort and not knowing why. I was fascinated/terrified by renderings of Colossus of Rhodes in a book I had when I was little.

I don't think this one was mentioned upthread, but the Vulcan statue in Birmingham, Alabama is still a weird/scary sighting for me when I travel through the south:

The most striking feature, however, is unarguably the towering jolly giant, Gnome Chomsky. He stands invitingly on the hill facing the highway, challenging one and all to come enjoy the scenery, visit the farm, and play a round or two of mini golf.

*Update (as of Aug 2011) Chomsky no longer holds the Guinness World Record. Reiman Gardens in Iowa is home to a Gnome that stands 15 feet tall. Although there is a Gnome in Poland who towers at 18 ft, but unlike Chomsky and the Reiman Gardens' gnome, theirs is made of fiberglass.
