It was, of course, completely accurate, yes?

Melbourne in the 70s must have been weirder than I realized.

Meantime -- Jinkx's album debut is live:

http://smarturl.it/TheInevitableAlbumiT

As is a song from it -- with Fred Schneider!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 6 May 2014 15:35 (nine years ago) link

Monsoon tells us that Schneider "wrote the song based on the idea of Jinkx having once been prim and proper; but after her first wild party, she quickly turned into a 'lady hurricane' who's ready to shake her goods for every boy at the bar." Well, that's certainly some inspiration for a good time!

re last night's episode, did Courtney's speech rub anyone else the wrong way? It kind of annoyed me, like she was basically saying 'I'm already famous so with this I can just continue being famous'?

This is probably why I'm seeing more chatter about the other two.

Thus the title of this piece

I did like this from a Bianca-supporting piece:

Still, the more screen time she got — the more her personality was afforded more than a stray sound-byte — the clearer it’s been that she’s not Triumph the Insult Queen, she’s just salty. No nonsense. The kind of gal who picks a dress type that works for her and sticks with it, because fuck you. Whom you can count on to dispense unsolicited but necessary advice. Who’s long since mastered opening a beer with a lighter — and if everyone’s misplaced their lighters, she uses her teeth. My new fantasy afternoon consists of sitting roadside with her at some sidewalk café, sipping Bloody Marys in wide-brimmed sunhats and relentlessly mocking passing pedestrians. Because it’s not all piss and vinegar with Bianca — see: her helpful tips to fellow queens and her adorable letter from home (“Roy-Lady”!), proof that there is some real well-meaning personhood behind those ubiquitous statement lashes. But, in the mean time, it’s vinegar all around, and deliciously so.

Aw! And love the bow tie.

Just to piss in the pot, I'm pulling for Courntey.

*gasface*

not even my patriotism could get me to pull for that shady queen

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 03:50 (nine years ago) link

I don't think she's shady! (Nor Darienne, as a matter of fact.) And I say that, remember, as a Joslyn fan.

Call the Doctorb, the B is for Brownstein (Leee), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 03:51 (nine years ago) link

the biggest trick courtney act ever pulled was convincing the world that she's not shady

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 04:09 (nine years ago) link

lol talking like she's a Satan.

When Courney says it comes from the heart I'm inclined to think that she's being real and that she's just so vapid and empty that it comes off as robotic because that's all she knows how to do

funny and lolexander (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 12:44 (nine years ago) link

I'm surprised Courtney made it to the top 3, honestly. Adore too (though she's been one of my favorites the whole season). It seems 75% certain that Bianca will win though, right?

funny and lolexander (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 12:45 (nine years ago) link

Stepford queen is pretty accurate for Miss Act.

Cronk's Not Cronk (Eric H.), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 12:45 (nine years ago) link

I'm not surprised she made it to the top 3 though. This whole season I was betting on Bianca-Courtney-Ben as the top 3 with Adore a potential spoiler.

Cronk's Not Cronk (Eric H.), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 12:46 (nine years ago) link

Meantime the reunion special was taped last night -- a friend was there and said this on Twitter just now:

@joebetance
Attended the finale of Ru Paul's Drag Race. The opening was sickening. The 4 hour taping was sickening but in a bad way. #TeamBianca

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 16:13 (nine years ago) link

And yeah I have to think Bianca edges Adore but it's closer for me than I EVER would have thought from the premiere episodes. I knew I liked Bianca straight off the bat but Adore just kept at it. I would still be happy with either of them winning for sure.

Also at this point I have to agree with upthread comments that Joslyn's probably got Miss Congeniality in the bag, barring a surprise from Ben (which I'd be good with too!). (Courtney would be out anyway as a finalist I guess and she's long since NOT been so nice, so.)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 16:34 (nine years ago) link

I love Bianca and I would love to see her win, but now that we're at the finale I don't feel like she's a lock. I dunno why. Something about Adore makes me think she could get it.

Either way, I mean, party. lol

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 16:52 (nine years ago) link

I really need to go back and rewatch the whole season after the coronation, I always like seeing how the winner starts to emerge/what the turning point is. Bianca's would be more of a Raja-like royal procession with a win from the get-go and more along the way, Adore's turning point...I'm not sure. Maybe the hip-hop challenge?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 17:04 (nine years ago) link

Maybe I'm blinded by pretty, but I really don't get this Bad Penny vibe from Courtney, at all! Nor her vapidity, really, I think her confessionals and how she deports herself on Untucked show a very grounded individual with a fair amount of self-awareness, who throws the amount of shade requisite to being a drag queen.

Call the Doctorb, the B is for Brownstein (Leee), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 17:17 (nine years ago) link

Maybe it's an Australian thing? VG said as much earlier.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 17:19 (nine years ago) link

And don't get me wrong, I don't HATE Courtney. I mean if the final three were Laganja, Madison and Darienne then you'd see me complaining a bit.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 17:20 (nine years ago) link

lol "Madison."

I like Darienne! What's wrong with me/you all?

Call the Doctorb, the B is for Brownstein (Leee), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 17:22 (nine years ago) link

Or whatever her name was! The one with the beak!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 17:24 (nine years ago) link

Darienne got back on my good side with not having an Untucked cow last week after being read for filth by Ru etc., unlike others one could name. Even so...I dunno. Still, hearing about how her mom treated her was pretty damn rough for sure. (I'm actually intrigued by the fact that I think Bianca's NEVER directly referenced her family much.)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 17:25 (nine years ago) link

Or whatever her name was! The one with the beak!

Ahh, Milk!

Darienne never really got on my bad side; if I hadda guess, her brand of humor has a snarky streak, which is easily manipulated into seeming like a b-word. But to me, she was always funny, the smoother Swiss to Bianca's sharp Jack.

I have a lot of ~ideas~ about the emotion pr0n on this show.

Call the Doctorb, the B is for Brownstein (Leee), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 17:29 (nine years ago) link

No not Milk, I was good with Milk -- the one with the contoured-to-hell nose, went out in one premiere episode.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 17:32 (nine years ago) link

I mean I know I could look upthread BUT THAT WOULD BE EASY.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 17:33 (nine years ago) link

I'm pretty certain you mean Milk!

Call the Doctorb, the B is for Brownstein (Leee), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 17:37 (nine years ago) link

(Magnolia Crawford, if you're dying to know, as I'm sure you are.)

Call the Doctorb, the B is for Brownstein (Leee), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 17:38 (nine years ago) link

Thank you that was it.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 17:43 (nine years ago) link

I don't see Courtney's vapidity as airheadedness, I see it more as just playing on a certain level of cultural unawareness and a teeeeeeeeeny bit of elitism. Like that innocent wide-eyed 'oh REALLY? that's how you do that/that's what you're going to wear//you said that?' is a form of judgement akin to 'we don't do things like that back home'

and that's where 90% of her shade comes from. everyone else is gauche and emotional and laying it all on the table - she got to be a 'drag superstar' in her home country without having to do that and she's not about to start here.

like if you really think she meant what she said in untucked about Darienne being on top this week, then you have fallen for Courtney's Act :) hook line and sinker

she never gave two shits for anything Darienne did and still doesn't, but since she knows Darienne's going home she's going to play emotional good samaritan and send her a way with a good feeling in her heart about sweet little courtney act. It's COMPLETELY two faced.

Maybe I'm overanalysing but I really think that courtney's accent and her look does 90% of the work for her of creating this kind of, idk, 'glamor' in the magicking terminology that she can hide behind. she can get away with all the shady bullshit of the other queens without ever being called on it because no-one actually HEARS what she's saying

I love all the shit she can do with her eyes, like she can go from 0 to fierce in .01 seconds

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 18:11 (nine years ago) link

I'm not going to judge her sincerity/lack thereof, but the backhanded elitism bit is spot on, probably because I'm pretty much the same: That is a very good analysis, for a girl!
