Or whatever her name was! The one with the beak!

Ahh, Milk!

Darienne never really got on my bad side; if I hadda guess, her brand of humor has a snarky streak, which is easily manipulated into seeming like a b-word. But to me, she was always funny, the smoother Swiss to Bianca's sharp Jack.

I have a lot of ~ideas~ about the emotion pr0n on this show.

No not Milk, I was good with Milk -- the one with the contoured-to-hell nose, went out in one premiere episode.

I mean I know I could look upthread BUT THAT WOULD BE EASY.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 17:33 (nine years ago) link

I'm pretty certain you mean Milk!

Thank you that was it.

I don't see Courtney's vapidity as airheadedness, I see it more as just playing on a certain level of cultural unawareness and a teeeeeeeeeny bit of elitism. Like that innocent wide-eyed 'oh REALLY? that's how you do that/that's what you're going to wear//you said that?' is a form of judgement akin to 'we don't do things like that back home'

and that's where 90% of her shade comes from. everyone else is gauche and emotional and laying it all on the table - she got to be a 'drag superstar' in her home country without having to do that and she's not about to start here.

like if you really think she meant what she said in untucked about Darienne being on top this week, then you have fallen for Courtney's Act :) hook line and sinker

she never gave two shits for anything Darienne did and still doesn't, but since she knows Darienne's going home she's going to play emotional good samaritan and send her a way with a good feeling in her heart about sweet little courtney act. It's COMPLETELY two faced.

Maybe I'm overanalysing but I really think that courtney's accent and her look does 90% of the work for her of creating this kind of, idk, 'glamor' in the magicking terminology that she can hide behind. she can get away with all the shady bullshit of the other queens without ever being called on it because no-one actually HEARS what she's saying

I love all the shit she can do with her eyes, like she can go from 0 to fierce in .01 seconds

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 18:11 (nine years ago) link

I'm not going to judge her sincerity/lack thereof, but the backhanded elitism bit is spot on, probably because I'm pretty much the same: That is a very good analysis, for a girl!

Call the Doctorb, the B is for Brownstein (Leee), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 18:11 (nine years ago) link

I can't stand how they film all three people "winning" and then reveal the winner by editing the episode, and so you're not actually watching the queen win, you're watching her pretend to win, and it comes off as totally flat and totally performative and inorganic and it is just the WORST.

xpost yeah I've always been disappointed by that, it's kind of a bargain-basement way to end it

I have a problem with it too, but given the entire show is very near a satire of reality TV conventions, I'm not sure a truly genuine reaction is appropriate for the moment in the first place.

true

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 18:22 (nine years ago) link

It was either that or the old way, which was a genuine coronation in a eerily empty room.

Cronk's Not Cronk (Eric H.), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 18:32 (nine years ago) link

Yeah for me the real coronation moment now is when you see the three watching the actual broadcast. Last year's was intense!

I'm not sure why they couldn't do a combination of both the pre-taped special and then split-screen the last segment with something like that video, Ned -- the queens watching the pre-taped live but allowing the audience to experience both simultaneously.

Quoting this because this reminds me that h II correctly pointed out on Facebook this important fact -- Adore quoted Phoebe Cates in Lace!

Doubtless true! But also they don't have to worry about FCC violations or whatever in the moment doing it the way they do, so.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 18:49 (nine years ago) link

that video was cool, ned

apropos of nothing, am I the last person to find out that Sharon & Alaska split?

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 18:51 (nine years ago) link

I thought FCC violations didn't apply to non over-the-air channels.

Cronk's Not Cronk (Eric H.), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 18:51 (nine years ago) link

Eric -- sorry, that's my point! IE, no broadcast split screen live of the thing. Also it would RUIN THE ILLUSION, MAN.

VG -- I thought you talked about that upthread already! The breakup that is.

and that proves that my brain would make a perfect colander

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 18:54 (nine years ago) link

I never see the satire! The show is self-aware to a degree that's exceptional for the genre, and funnier than almost all of them, but RPDR is fundamentally a part of that genre. I almost think reality tv is impossible to satirize without an actual script, a la the Onion's "Sex House."

I thought FCC violations didn't apply to non over-the-air channels.

I think that a lot of cable channels, although they aren't bound by FCC regs, self-censor for the sake of advertisers.

Call the Doctorb, the B is for Brownstein (Leee), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 19:15 (nine years ago) link

Ha, I see a little more clearly now, I took 'non over-the-air' to mean web clips/livestreams

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 19:19 (nine years ago) link

PS I think Ru's got the Ozzie accent down because his longtime companion is an Ozzie cowboy.

Call the Doctorb, the B is for Brownstein (Leee), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 20:41 (nine years ago) link

Ha, that's right, I'd forgotten that.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 May 2014 20:44 (nine years ago) link

is RPDR the Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman of reality television programming?

funny and lolexander (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 7 May 2014 22:23 (nine years ago) link

I'll settle for that.
