Geeta's in SF! Yay!

Btw Shasta we went to Shimo per your recommendation. Quite good. Also hit the Limon Rotisserie out on South Van Ness which was great. I have no idea who is eating lunch out there (as far as I could tell it was us plus a couple of hospital employees) but they are damn lucky. Whole chicken plus two sides for $16.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 26 March 2009 17:38 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah Limon is great - haven't been to the new location tho

finally got something from the Sentinel. Being vegetarian I'm sure I'm not getting the full experience, but it was a pretty good sandwich.

Is there a concert curfew in SF now?

Leee, Sunday, 5 April 2009 03:39 (fifteen years ago) link

don't think so, at least not a new one. The curfew for <18 is officially unenforced afaik.

fajita seas, Sunday, 5 April 2009 21:16 (fifteen years ago) link

some venues that are ensconced in residential areas (like the independent) have a curfew on weeknights, afaik.

my favorite place in the world right now is the bean bag cafe on divis. free wifi + $1.92 pints from 3-10 pm = all I need in the world.

iatee, Thursday, 11 June 2009 00:00 (fourteen years ago) link

I used to live 3 blocks from that cafe.

We haven't argued about food on this thread in quite a while.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 11 June 2009 00:08 (fourteen years ago) link

LA food sucks

though I've heard there's this one place. the food is meant to be alright

admrl, Thursday, 11 June 2009 00:14 (fourteen years ago) link

It seems that all the good food is in the San Gabriel Valley somehow

admrl, Thursday, 11 June 2009 00:15 (fourteen years ago) link

I've had plenty of good food in LA. Some Oaxacan place in Venice. And Ethiopian in Lil Ethiopia. And some ramen place near Sawtelle.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 11 June 2009 00:21 (fourteen years ago) link

I can never remember names though. And everything is so far flung anyway.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 11 June 2009 00:22 (fourteen years ago) link

No wait I do remember that the Ethiopian place was Meals By Genet.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 11 June 2009 00:22 (fourteen years ago) link

Yes, but those are known by everyone here to be the only three good restaurants in the city. you just happened to eat at them all by coincidence

admrl, Thursday, 11 June 2009 00:22 (fourteen years ago) link

Yes, you gave me their card! haha

That place is good, tho

admrl, Thursday, 11 June 2009 00:23 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm about to move down the street from this place, fortunately

admrl, Thursday, 11 June 2009 00:24 (fourteen years ago) link

Do you like Ethiopian now? You used to accuse it of being baby food.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 11 June 2009 00:24 (fourteen years ago) link

"You know you're at an authentic Mexican restaurant when "Marrow/Guts" is listed as a meat option."

Alex in SF, Thursday, 11 June 2009 00:25 (fourteen years ago) link

Ethiopian food is baby food!

admrl, Thursday, 11 June 2009 00:25 (fourteen years ago) link

babies fucking know what's up. why waste all that energy chewing food yourself when someone or something else can do it for you prior?

akm, Thursday, 11 June 2009 03:10 (fourteen years ago) link

SF is probably the best straight-up food city in the US, so everywhere pales in comparison except maybe NY and Chicago, both of which have very different cuisines.

LA doesn't have the same food culture, but there is a shit-ton of good eatin' to be had there and anyone sez diffrent ain't tryin'.

How is the food at the Bean Bag? I live on Broderick, but have never got anything but coffee there.

svend, Thursday, 11 June 2009 03:26 (fourteen years ago) link

I have yet to actually eat there...even though I've been there a dozen times in the last month, it was always for wifi+beer. But the food looks pretty good.

iatee, Thursday, 11 June 2009 05:26 (fourteen years ago) link

(and someone recommends the food wayyy upthread)

iatee, Thursday, 11 June 2009 05:26 (fourteen years ago) link

Going mid-July - Old 97's concert, Giants game (with fantastic seats - Lexus Dugout Club, row BBB). If I can't move there, at least I can take multiple trips in a year...

Anyone know anything about the Hotel Vertigo? It's a couple of blocks away from the last place we stayed (Hotel Carlton, which was nice) and about $20 less per night. Newly remodeled, etc. but the renovations were only completed earlier this year. (It's the hotel where Kim Novak stayed in Vertigo.)

And a couple of blocks away there's a restaurant called Fish & Fowl that looks interesting - local, seasonal food. Debating that or Gary Danko for one nice dinner (we only get four nights), if anyone has an opinion there. Worried that Danko might be too fancy, I don't want to pack anything but a pair of jeans and some casual shirts.

Hotel Vertigo rooms they are showing on the website are ugly, but it's $20 less so really who cares.

Never eaten at Danko or even heard of Fish & Fowl (do you mean Fish & Farm? That I've heard of, but it's theater district so I've not had a reason to go.) I'd probably pick Danko if they are similarly priced and suck up the jean stares.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 11 June 2009 12:31 (fourteen years ago) link

Not a lot of people are gonna wear jeans at Danko - when I went it seemed to range from suits to nice-looking biz casual, but you could get away with dark jeans if you're wearing a nice shirt. I really enjoyed my 5-course dinner (at the bar) there. I had also thought about Fish & Farm, where the menu looked nice, but I erred against it as the ratings weren't quite high enough. Chez Panisse Cafe would be a good compromise between the two - better than F&F, less expensive than Danko. I recommend a walk around the Berkeley campus before or after (if shoes allow for such).

Reggiano Jackson (gabbneb), Thursday, 11 June 2009 13:13 (fourteen years ago) link

actually my go-to rater says F&F is good enough (but Panisse and Delfina and Zuni are better)

And a couple of blocks away there's a restaurant called Fish & Fowl that looks interesting

I have a friend who went here several months ago and loved it but I have yet to go.

there is a new Dona up on Fillmore. It is about 20x bigger than the one in the mission and is filled with the beautiful (or, face lifted) people. Weird.

akm, Thursday, 11 June 2009 14:28 (fourteen years ago) link

Er, Dosa. I can't type anymore.

akm, Thursday, 11 June 2009 14:28 (fourteen years ago) link

last summer i spent an enjoyable three days in SF w/the family, just doing obv tourist stuff like climbing the coit tower and visiting ice-cold alcatraz (fascinating!) we ate really well both at random stops and planned restaurants. including lunch at delfina which compared quite favorably to NY pizza as far as we were concerned. some 'serious eaters' disagree tho

m coleman, Thursday, 11 June 2009 14:31 (fourteen years ago) link

New Dosa is good. I finally hit up Udapi Palace down the street from the original Dosa and frankly I think it might be better (it's certainly cheaper.)

Alex in SF, Thursday, 11 June 2009 15:44 (fourteen years ago) link

Fish & Farm, that's it. Hadn't heard of Delfina or Chez Panisse, I'll check them out.
