I always thought of these guys as like the U.S. hardcore version of Dif Juz. I would like to hear them again, it's been a very long time.

Instro rock stuff = astonishing. Dub stuff = hmm, in retrospect. BIG were my favourite band that no-one else had heard of for years, back in the "it's on SST? I'll try it!" days. Dunno why Don Caballero et al got all the plaudits when these guys were doing it better several years earlier but there ya go. Saw them live once at an unpromoted gig in London, it felt like being trapped underwater, I could barely breathe by the end. Superb! And they looked like a bunch of music students too. Didn't guitarist Andy Hawkins end up playing with Laswell? Bit of an artistic comedown if he did.

He did a solo album Laswell produced, billed as Azonic. It's out of print but well worth finding - four long-ass ultra-heavy guitar solos with samples of Apocalypse Now dialogue and Tibetan monk drones used as bridging devices.

I wrote a looooong SST roundup for the Voice in 1987 or so, included tons of albums on the label, and bizarrely my three favorites at the time were by Dinosaur (their second and best album -- their best song, "Repulsion," was from their FIRST album by the way), Screaming Trees (*Even if and Especially When* or whatever it was called), and Blind Idiot God (their self-titled debut). I've barely listened to them since, though I did buy a used copy of *Cyclotron* a few years ago, and liked enough to file it in storage instead of getting rid of it. As metal-dub goes, um, not as good as "Time Has Come Today" by the Chambers Brothers, or the metal-dub songs on certain Killing Joke or Celtic Frost albums, or "Whole Lotta Love," or lots of other things, probably including Ruts DC. Possibly better than Fugazi, though. Also, way better than whatever band it was I heard last year that had one of the BIG singing in it now or something like that.

Oh yeah, Khanate (does the ex B.I.G. guy do those idiotic witch shrieking noises in that band, or does somebody else? Whatever. I also don't like Khanate as much as the old Old album I have somewhere, which may or may not include two future Khanate members.)

(And Blind Idiot God were also more interesting than Dub Trio, too.)

Tim from BIG plays the drums in Khanate, except they call them 'hammers' like the jokers they are. Alan from OLD does the silly vocals

Blind Idiot God made some great LOUD records. They played a show a couple months ago in Boston, opening for Sunn O))). Man, I really should've gone.

Searched for years for a copy of Undertow for a friend, that thing was damned hard to find. So if you happen across a BIG record, snap it up!

nine years pass...

spent a while in the late 80s fighting what felt like a lone doomed battle trying to get ppl in the UK to hear how great BIG were

drawbacks:
A: i think the sound at their liveshows could be very hit-and-miss and venue- and mixdesk-dependent
B: andy hawkins was a lovely person but not a particularly helpful interview (or at least i found no way to draw him out that turned into a good writing abt the band)

UNDERTOW and BEFORE AFTER EVER are on spotify, but not CYCLOTRON or the SST debut (which i think probably remains my favourite)

I believe plans are in the works to remaster and reissue the debut and Cyclotron. There's supposedly another new album in the works, too.

The first BIG is awesome, as is Before Ever After. I also really like the Azonic album from this year, Hawkins' ambient-"orchestral doom" side project (also featuring the current BIG drummer)
