This sounds fantastic. Just hope I don't have to sell a pint or two of blood to afford it.

thx for all the info shakey...i couldn't get the link on the mynah birds response to work...

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 16 March 2007 21:51 (seventeen years ago) link

its supposed to be a link to the iTunes store entry for the Motown Box Set, which contains a few Mynah Birds singles. I think it comes up if you search for "Mynah Birds" in iTunes.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 21:54 (seventeen years ago) link

(btw I have not listened to them yet meself)

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 March 2007 21:55 (seventeen years ago) link

so just to backpedal a bit, does anyone else think it's kinda lame that the Fillmore and Massey Hall shows are apparently going to be included in the big box set? i mean, most hardcore Neil fans (who this archives box is almost certainly aimed at) are going to have already bought the single disc editions on the day they came out--even though the nerds (like, uh, me) already have them on bootleg! So if I get the 8 cd/2 dvd set later this year, I'll have three versions of the same show? I guess I'd rather just have a six disc/2 dvd set, if it'd be cheaper. anyway...

EBAY

Edward III, Monday, 19 March 2007 17:10 (seventeen years ago) link

more updates: Journey Through the Past is not gonna be included in the box set, either in music or film form. The DVDs are primarily home videos and unreleased live footage, young Neil driving his gear around in a hearse, etc. Stuff that was made for official release (like Human Highway or Rust Never Sleeps or Journey Through the Past) are not in there.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 19 March 2007 17:15 (seventeen years ago) link

that's kind of lame

akm, Monday, 19 March 2007 17:27 (seventeen years ago) link

was it confirmed that massey hall and fillmore are on this? Iwouldn't assume they are and have seen nothing to indicate taht they are

akm, Monday, 19 March 2007 17:27 (seventeen years ago) link

I think Neil said something like there would be spaces for them in the box design at least

sexyDancer, Monday, 19 March 2007 17:33 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm hoping there's a lot of mis-information floating around this thread because, to be perfectly honest, the more I'm reading the less I actually care about ever seeing these things. Releases I've already paid for? Home movies? Come on Neil.

i would love to have a good copy of that 1974 bottom line show, but it's probably not up to neil's audio standards. er, and i guess it would go on massive box vol.2.

scott seward, Monday, 19 March 2007 18:55 (seventeen years ago) link

vol 3. is gonna rule with 9 discs of NY classics done in "Trans" fashion

hmm, yeah that 74 Bottom Line show is probably the best Neil Young bootleg ever (which is saying something). It ought to have been included as a bonus disc with the On The Beach reissue. But it's an audience recording (I think), so it probably won't be officially released. Still, I'm glad it exists in any form. That opening "Pushed It Over The Edge/Citizen Kane Jr. Blues" is up there with his finest never-released tunes. Wonder if there's a studio version of that song in the archives...I've heard the sort of wonky CSNY live rendition. Good, but not as good as the song deserves.

Anyhoo, don't mean to be ungrateful or anything. Regardless of what's on these Archive box sets and what's not ME LOVE NEIL YOUNG.

tylerw, Monday, 19 March 2007 21:04 (seventeen years ago) link

News from Billboard:

"Massey Hall" and last fall's "Live at the Fillmore East" will be included in the box as bonus discs. The remainder of the chronological collection features material cut with Young's early Canadian band the Squires, recordings from the period during which he lived in Topanga Canyon, Calif., scores of previously unreleased studio tracks and a live disc drawn from a week's worth of concerts from the Toronto venue the Riverboat.

"This really is an audio biography, not a boxed set," enthuses Standish, who says three additional "Archives" boxes will follow. "The photos in the book are unbelievable. Those in and of themselves are incredible pieces of art."

The notoriously press-shy Young is expected to do some interviews in support of "Archives" but for now is not planning a tour around the release. "A lot of people don't realize how extensive and intense the Freedom of Speech tour he did with Crosby, Stills & Nash was," says Standish. "I think Neil is taking a little bit of a break at the moment. But you never know what's around the corner. If the muse moves him, anything can happen."

tylerw, Thursday, 22 March 2007 14:36 (seventeen years ago) link

soooo, the Fillmore and Massey Hall shows are in addition to the 8 discs? Or what?
Also: "Notoriously press-shy?" I mean he doesn't give interviews every five minutes, but he's not exactly Dylanesque in this regard.

can anybody help me obtain the 74 Bottom Line show?

When I read a story about this thing, I take whatever is said, especially if it's by Neil, and I add a "not" in front of it.

But I want to believe.

so is there really not going to be a plain old CD release of this? i see amazon has the blu ray and dvd versions ... both of which i can't afford or listen to.

tylerw, Friday, 31 October 2008 16:49 (fifteen years ago) link

lol @ $300. I know Neil is in his own world, but I can't imagine this is a good time to release music with that price tag. I hope there's a CD set, b/c I'd like to buy this, but Neil must have some idea how this stuff will work out otherwise in 2009.

Euler, Friday, 31 October 2008 17:48 (fifteen years ago) link

Dudes its not even Blu-Ray, Blue-Ray. Neil is WORKING ON NEW TECHNOLOGY TO MAKE THIS AWESOMELY AWESOME AND WORTH $300.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 31 October 2008 17:50 (fifteen years ago) link

Don't worry, Neil Young has a winning economic plan that ties in with the Archives.

tylerw, Friday, 31 October 2008 18:09 (fifteen years ago) link

The archives box will be a bit too much for me, really. But does this mean that his back catalogue will finally get remastered afterwards too?

I mean, I can manage without what he has done for the past 35 years or so, but up to and including "Harvest", everything he did was great, whether it was alone, with CSNY or with Buffalo Springfield.

does it have the full "Bluebird"?

how much unheard stuff is there from the Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere sessions?

i would like a six-disc boxset of alternate studio versions of cowgirl in the sand please

69, Friday, 21 November 2008 17:41 (fifteen years ago) link

yes it is really coming out. it will be on Blu-Ray. Seems like most of the hold up is related to all the fancy Blu-Ray programming required (I didn't press too hard on when things would be done or why they were late since that would've been pretty rude). I talked to the tech who's working on it and he ran through a bunch of the menus and extras on the discs - apparently one of the issues that took a bunch of time was how to make it so that you could be playing music from the disc while going through the menus (apparently this is not currently possible on most Blu-Rays?) The menus and graphics are INSANE - all these ridiculously high-res memorabilia photos and tour manifests and handwritten lyrics and stuff like that. I saw 9 discs in all being prepared, saw the sleeve mockups, etc. There was a disc devoted to Journey Through the Past, two discs titled Topanga Canyon (one 1969, the other 1970), the Massey Hall stuff, some Buffalo Springfield stuff. I can't remember all of it.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 21 November 2008 17:48 (fifteen years ago) link

I dunno how much unreleased stuff will be on it. Guy played me a great Buffalo Springfield song that I didn't recognize but I dunno if it was unreleased. There are boxes and boxes of tapes so I wasn't sure what was gonna get used or not (I expressed a particular interest in the box labelled "Human Highway" but the guy just laughed)

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 21 November 2008 17:49 (fifteen years ago) link

it's all in a short paragraph here btw
