yeah, sounding good kbp! south coast seems like a chill place

and nice work on yours as well, S-. i've tried to use a detuned piano so many times and it never seems to work, but it sounds great on your track!

i've ruined another song by adding an unsolicited drum part -- this time it's a 14th c dance tune! I think it sounds kinda cool though. Ruining songs is my new musical hobby until I have some new songs to play.

Finally got around to listening to this. What a cool idea! Your hi-hat work is pretty great; lotta nuance happening.

i think playing to recordings and then recording that is pretty much the best thing you can do for learning good time, musicality, etc.

i've got a new track out on a label compilation, something i did late last year to fill a gap in my live set that turned out kinda ok - http://soundcloud.com/chantssound/saturnine

whoa thanks! i have been working on finer movements and practicing super hard with multiple bounce strokes and moving around the kit when i do the, i dunno, calisthenics/power hour portion of my practice. then i find that the other stuff is so much easier and i can focus on sounding good or doing more interesting things. i have always liked that song and so i figured why not add a little something. i hope it's not offensive to the people who made the original recordings. it's not, right? i mean, as long as the original recorded version doesn't have the drum part that i'm playing?

i have learned so much and it's almost my 1 yr anniversary, so it means a lot to hear from people about what it sounds like. i am really trying hard to get over the embarrassment portion of putting myself out there, and this is helping a lot!

La Lechera, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 15:53 (nine years ago) link

also jordan i love the no no no no NO part
your songs always sound so professional

La Lechera, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 15:56 (nine years ago) link

thanks! i'm finally (like just in the last 6 months) feeling like i can make good-sounding mixes of my own material, although a lot of that has to do with using fewer & better sounds to start with.

festival culture (Jordan), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 16:09 (nine years ago) link

Thanks Karl. It's not, uh, *meant* to be a detuned piano, rather the only piano that was around. I'd say if anything it's my playing that the most detuned.

Otherwise, me and user Haitch have a new band, saving the world from the utter crapness of World Cup themes!

I can't imagine the people who did the original would find it offensive. I'd think a lot of artists would welcome creative additions/repurposings.

Also, Jordan, cool track! Really eerie (in a good way).

Couple of (relatively) new things on my page: a Lou Reed cover for a WFMU show and an excerpt from my new 7".

idk if other people will like it. it's just a fanatical thing I made for myself to aid in self-hypnosis.

My very first EP, containing the very first songs I wrote when I was around 16. (It's in German)

Now that I got them out of the way, I can hopefully concentrate on newer/better material now.

i recorded a live set for public television. this probably the first time i've really heard what it sounds like when i play drums over the tracks, just glad it was in the pocket for at least the majority of the time and that the mix was decent.

Merdeyeux, Thursday, 10 July 2014 20:16 (nine years ago) link

So the other week my band got together for the first time in weeks and unbeknown to me the bassist had been learning looping sample tricks. Which he applied to my vocals live as I sang. And they came out a little like this.

Thanks! I was startled by it as it happened. I had no idea Ben had looping pedals, it was weird to sing with that going on but when I realised it, I kinda went with it. Its sad it'll never be the same way twice is the only thing.

I've been poking around at some music. Newest is "Freeway/Carousel" (which is still in sketch form).

i made a playlist on soundcloud of my first year of songs. i couldn't have done this without the help of the good people of ilx and i am really genuinely grateful for all of the help and encouragement and time and effort friends have given me. i'm really proud of this!
anyway, since this is my last weekend of summer, here it is http://bit.ly/1nX6X1Y

Cool!

I made a new album over the past seven months: http://scarequotes.bandcamp.com/album/its-not-for-everyone-but-its-for-you. It's my first album in like three or four years. Lots of tape hiss, lots of guitars.

Feel a bit bad posting stuff up myself as although I have this thread bookmarked I fail badly at keeping up with listening.

But my new band have our debut single out, and you can listen here: http://riotsnotdiets.bandcamp.com/album/begin-to-dissolve

I was away for a while and mostly sans ILX, so just now catching up.

Sounds cool S-! What's the new gear?

emil.y I really like the part where 'Razorblade the tape' where it opens up and the singer says "won't let you get away"

NA 'Vice President' is a sweet song. Sort of reminds me of the controlled unhingedness that YLT has on some of their better louder songs

Karl Malone, Monday, 18 August 2014 22:44 (nine years ago) link

What's the new gear?

i believe the gear in question is the elektron octatrack, which i witnessed being used to excellent effect this weekend just gone

ned's atomic raggett (electricsound), Monday, 18 August 2014 23:39 (nine years ago) link

Thanks for listening KM. I always thought it would be funny to have a stoner rock band called Vice President but the second best option was using the name for a heavy psych song (or what's a heavy psych song in my mind).

Immediate Follower (NA), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 16:48 (nine years ago) link

NA i liked how your album had all kinds of different songs on it but they all were you, so they sounded coherent
also as i mentioned, sensitive family song --> frozen grapes was a stroke of genius
the first song was my favorite, i think?

here is one thing i did -- it's all me! drums + my little synth. it would sound better with something else in the mix but i left it as is because i was excited that it sounded ok at all. there's at least one noticeable flub in the middle. http://bit.ly/YpsS8s

and here is another (i don't even know what to call this -- is it a remix if drums are added to an existing recording? is it ok to post for listening (but not for download)? i wonder about these things. it's another 13-14th c dance tune with unsolicited extra drums. i think it sounds kinda Third Ear Band ish? http://bit.ly/1qmXTAk

even if no one listens to it, posting things here is good for me because it means i'm not afraid to do so (even if i should be!)

cross over the mushroom circle (La Lechera), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 17:52 (nine years ago) link

i believe the youtubers call them "drum covers"

festival culture (Jordan), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 17:57 (nine years ago) link

I'm glad it sounds cohesive. It was supposed to be more cohesive/have more of a shared sound across the songs but I'm not good at sticking to plans like that. I'm really happy with how the album turned out though.

Immediate Follower (NA), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 18:06 (nine years ago) link

don't take this the wrong way (you do not sound anything like lou barlow at his sappiest) but it reminds me of what i liked about peak era sebadoh -- catchy songs, variety, some unexpected but welcome turns. except that was 3 songwriters and you are still 1 person afaik :)

drum covers eh
i guess it's not against the law if it's not available for download? i haven't really entered the world of youtube because i don't particularly want to be seen.

cross over the mushroom circle (La Lechera), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 18:08 (nine years ago) link

Oh it's def going for old-school lo-fi 4-track home recording aesthetic, intentionally not "clean" (though I don't know if I could do clean if I tried), though I was never into Sebadoh specifically. That's my wheelhouse.

Immediate Follower (NA), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 18:14 (nine years ago) link

festival culture (Jordan), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 18:39 (nine years ago) link

i thought for sure it would be ok but then i read this! i think people bristled bc he was collecting/distributing his stuff but man those folk people are kinda nuts. http://www.thewire.co.uk/in-writing/columns/bell-labs_folk-fatwas-from-the-trad-taliban

Although Under The Hills And Nearby was an extremely modest release – a handful of cassettes and a Bandcamp page – I worried that Callow might ruffle folk feathers for using recordings without permission. And so it proved. He wrote to Topic to open discussions, and the curt response was a bill for hundreds of pounds plus VAT. The Alan Lomax archive took a similarly dim view and saw it all in financial terms. Then came a threat of litigation from Mike Yates, a song collector who had made some of the original recordings. Yates let off steam in a rant on the Musical Traditions website – “my feeling of disgust…underhand manner…Callow’s horrible work (he can’t even keep in time with the singing!)”.

cross over the mushroom circle (La Lechera), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 18:50 (nine years ago) link

on the other hand, i kinda get it
those recordings aren't his to modify

cross over the mushroom circle (La Lechera), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 18:51 (nine years ago) link

I take a very lenient view on appropriating, especially when there's no money being exchanged.

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 19:01 (nine years ago) link

true, you do get the folks who will go in whether there's money to be made or not. for instance my brass band plays a version of 'r3d dress' aka 'h1gh heel sneakers', a blues, and a relative of the artist who originally recorded it is relentless as far as going after license fees wherever it shows up. my favorite live video of us ever recently got taken off youtube because it contained the last few bars of that tune (and unfortunately it was in the title of the video).
