marked lack of lust objects here

On-the-spot Dicespin (DJP), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 18:54 (nine years ago) link

yeah, I just think "lol u realize you reader of many blogs are giving computer advice to actual software developers right" is an attitude that someone with overly rigid thinking tends to have. you can miss out on some good ideas with that attitude. obviously, the stakes were lower in this case, but that then begs why one needs to be so dickishly defensive about credentials.

Sufjenga Cat Giffin (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 18:57 (nine years ago) link

cool

lag∞n, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 18:59 (nine years ago) link

I am interested in reading your criticism of it, though

Sufjenga Cat Giffin (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 19:02 (nine years ago) link

I don't think it was credentials, it was like... don't act like you're imparting knowledge

I read part of the swift book thingy on my flight back the other day. The basics look good but I haven't looked into how it looks syntactically with the cocoa stuff yet. The type of variables that are constants by default seemed familiar -- what other languages do that?

a strange man (mh), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 19:02 (nine years ago) link

i certainly dont know enough abt that sort of thing to criticize it, i mean i can kinda make an app but not that much xp

yeah also it was kinda funny particularly cause it was someone who has no reason to put a beta on their computer telling people who do not to

lag∞n, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 19:04 (nine years ago) link

yeah fwiw I saw a lot of myself in legumes post, so I judged harshly. I think there were missteps on both sides like I said. Prbly should have saved it for a tumblr post.

Sufjenga Cat Giffin (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 19:05 (nine years ago) link

i feel like maybe u were just considering it more deeply than it was intended, it was more of a rmde type moment than anything

lag∞n, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 19:07 (nine years ago) link

SOMEONE ELSE may have taken it a lil too seriously too

lag∞n, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 19:13 (nine years ago) link

anyway i hope markers rage at my attempting putting of him into his place builds until he has no choice but to learn to build apps just to show me how i have no idea what im talking about and he makes millions of dollars and leads a fruitful happy life and forgets all about how mad he was and we are friends again

lag∞n, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 19:17 (nine years ago) link

this is starting to remind me of this coworker my friends used to have who was really bad at sarcasm detection and thought I was on his side when I was sarcastic and thought I was ripping on him when I was being genuine

a strange man (mh), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 19:18 (nine years ago) link

maybe we are all just horrible nerds who care about apple products

lag∞n, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 19:19 (nine years ago) link

my stupid first idea was to see if 10.10 would run on that mac pro that isn't technically supposed to be able to run anything over 10.7 but... I used hacks

a strange man (mh), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 19:20 (nine years ago) link

so how about that steve jobs? now he was a dick!

Sufjenga Cat Giffin (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 19:20 (nine years ago) link

lag∞n, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 19:21 (nine years ago) link

lag∞n, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 19:23 (nine years ago) link

did apple announce a new product named 'larry'? is it shipping this quarter?

Sufjenga Cat Giffin (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 19:24 (nine years ago) link

in a few seconds this thread is going to be about Larry/Balki 'shippers

On-the-spot Dicespin (DJP), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 19:24 (nine years ago) link

I know I eventually got used to the product name 'iPhone' but for some reason the idea of 'iWatch' is still really chafing me

a strange man (mh), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 19:26 (nine years ago) link

iWatchU

lag∞n, Wednesday, 4 June 2014 19:26 (nine years ago) link

the unWatch

a strange man (mh), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 19:27 (nine years ago) link

the iWatch belongs on your wrist, where it will not chafe. the idea of iWatch belongs in your heart, where it will not chafe.

Sufjenga Cat Giffin (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 19:28 (nine years ago) link

the iWatch and the idea of iWatch will both definitely chafe your penis, so don't try it

Sufjenga Cat Giffin (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 19:29 (nine years ago) link

sorry

many XPs ago...

If you're already spending the $$$ to join ADC, it's absolutely worth it to buy a used previous generation iOS device specifically for testing code on. I found a mangled jailbroken iPad on eBay that has a cracked screen, but otherwise works fine. The crack makes it annoying to use at length and its nothing I'd want to demo in front of a client but it was dirt cheap and perfect to run betas and broken code on. The Xcode simulator can only go so far.

scala has var vs. val keywords. clojure has, uh, var and let? this all goes back to just sugar for 'const' and 'const correctness' C, though maybe with slightly different semantics.

you of course also have ml's distinction between let bindings and mutable refs, but that's somewhat stronger...

wat is teh waht (s.clover), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 20:19 (nine years ago) link

I usually put the betas on my primary phone when they hit v5 or v6 or so. The release notes are a pretty good guide to things that are broken, and if there's a dealbreaker in there avoid. Usually the first one is a disaster, and this one is awful on the phone.

diamonddave85‌ (diamonddave85), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 20:46 (nine years ago) link

yeah, I guess I am used to the const battleground and the syntactic sugar seemed nice

oh god, Plan 9... I never used that directly, but played around with the embedded environment that Lucent later released that was inspired by it
