On-the-spot Dicespin (DJP), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 19:24 (nine years ago) link

I know I eventually got used to the product name 'iPhone' but for some reason the idea of 'iWatch' is still really chafing me

a strange man (mh), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 19:26 (nine years ago) link

iWatchU

a strange man (mh), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 19:27 (nine years ago) link

the iWatch belongs on your wrist, where it will not chafe. the idea of iWatch belongs in your heart, where it will not chafe.

Sufjenga Cat Giffin (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 19:28 (nine years ago) link

the iWatch and the idea of iWatch will both definitely chafe your penis, so don't try it

many XPs ago...

If you're already spending the $$$ to join ADC, it's absolutely worth it to buy a used previous generation iOS device specifically for testing code on. I found a mangled jailbroken iPad on eBay that has a cracked screen, but otherwise works fine. The crack makes it annoying to use at length and its nothing I'd want to demo in front of a client but it was dirt cheap and perfect to run betas and broken code on. The Xcode simulator can only go so far.

The type of variables that are constants by default seemed familiar -- what other languages do that?

― a strange man (mh), Wednesday, June 4, 2014 3:02 PM Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

scala has var vs. val keywords. clojure has, uh, var and let? this all goes back to just sugar for 'const' and 'const correctness' C, though maybe with slightly different semantics.

you of course also have ml's distinction between let bindings and mutable refs, but that's somewhat stronger...

wat is teh waht (s.clover), Wednesday, 4 June 2014 20:19 (nine years ago) link

I usually put the betas on my primary phone when they hit v5 or v6 or so. The release notes are a pretty good guide to things that are broken, and if there's a dealbreaker in there avoid. Usually the first one is a disaster, and this one is awful on the phone.

yeah, I guess I am used to the const battleground and the syntactic sugar seemed nice

oh god, Plan 9... I never used that directly, but played around with the embedded environment that Lucent later released that was inspired by it

a strange man (mh), Thursday, 5 June 2014 14:08 (nine years ago) link

lag∞n, Thursday, 5 June 2014 14:09 (nine years ago) link

yeah, idk, I think they'll still have a headphone jack but this is a cool setup for selling high quality itunes audio

a strange man (mh), Thursday, 5 June 2014 14:10 (nine years ago) link

removing the jack wld save space but also make people mad i cld see them doing it

lag∞n, Thursday, 5 June 2014 14:11 (nine years ago) link

im sure theyd make an adaptor

lag∞n, Thursday, 5 June 2014 14:12 (nine years ago) link

That would be a new low for Apple. So yeah, I could see them doing it.

schwantz, Thursday, 5 June 2014 17:24 (nine years ago) link

man this would be so weird and stupid

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Thursday, 5 June 2014 17:30 (nine years ago) link

I've been using bluetooth headphones recently. But wow, my battery drains fast with BT on.

Jeff, Thursday, 5 June 2014 17:33 (nine years ago) link

remember the original iPhone headphone jack and how it couldn't accept regular headphones?

On-the-spot Dicespin (DJP), Thursday, 5 June 2014 17:36 (nine years ago) link

I figured out the reason

Headphone jack: 3.5mm in diameter
Lightning connector: 2.46 mm in height

They could make their phones thinner by 1mm

, Thursday, 5 June 2014 17:40 (nine years ago) link

xp yeah, that was really stupid. if they're gonna do this they should just include the headphone adapter with the phone

Nhex, Thursday, 5 June 2014 17:47 (nine years ago) link

The old 30-pin connector was also capable of outputting a digital audio signal iirc

Moving the DAC conversion to outside the iPhone could make sense, much less noisy envirionment

But the iPhone already has really great DAC circuitry imo

And it'd be required if they eliminated the headphone jack

Forcing every headphone mftr to sell both a 3.5mm- and Lightning-terminated jack of each of their headphones would be a cruel and sadistic and gleeful move by Apple

, Thursday, 5 June 2014 17:52 (nine years ago) link

An adapter would be pretty shit.

schwantz, Thursday, 5 June 2014 17:56 (nine years ago) link

they will sell little appleDACs that people will collect like tt cartridges. check out my ortofon blue appleDAC.

Sufjenga Cat Giffin (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 5 June 2014 18:08 (nine years ago) link

The only way that could be cool is if iPhones/iPads come with an adapter that has a cable with the standard controls on it, with a 3.5mm headphone jack embedded in it. But even then - How do you charge and listen at the same time?

schwantz, Thursday, 5 June 2014 18:38 (nine years ago) link

you plug your kinetic charger vest output into your headphones. you are a more perfect human this way.

Sufjenga Cat Giffin (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 5 June 2014 18:42 (nine years ago) link

man can they really be big enough assholes to do this? Newsflash my loyalty to Grado is greater than my loyalty to Apple.

Khamma chameleon (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 5 June 2014 18:44 (nine years ago) link

fwiw with the lightning connector and the last OS, iPhones and iPads became able to use external USB sound cards. So if you have a headphone amplifier at your work desk or whatever that acts as a USB sound card, it works with that (once you use the lightning->usb adapter, that is)

pretty cool imo

a strange man (mh), Thursday, 5 June 2014 19:20 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, but leave the regular jack alone.

schwantz, Thursday, 5 June 2014 19:34 (nine years ago) link

I concur

a strange man (mh), Thursday, 5 June 2014 19:35 (nine years ago) link

take away the regular jack. make the lightning bolt fiber optic.
