tropical beards of paradise (san frandisco), Tuesday, 10 March 2009 19:29 (fifteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...

am listening to this permanent vacation label comp and it's just SO GOOD - am guessing it's mostly old stuff but am particularly jamming:

- that playful, oscillating melody in bostro pesopeo's 'communquis'
- qzen's sultry vocal on 40 thieves' 'don't turn it off'
- that awesome bassline on permanent vacation's 'tic toc'
- the epic largeness of the superpitcher rmx of 'iridium'

lex pretend, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 10:07 (fifteen years ago) link

that bostro pesopeo 12" is pretty amazing, i gotta say. it really flew under the radar for something a) on a trendy label and b) with a trendy remixer (hercules + love affair, in this case).

prince of PLURsia (haitch), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 11:43 (fifteen years ago) link

last night san frandisco djed with Tom Cruise of Worst Friends and he gave me their new 12". it has a remix by bostro pesopeo on it. i haven't listened to it yet but am looking forward to it when i get home tonight.

*san frandisco and i*

just woke up

(jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 15:40 (fifteen years ago) link

that bostro pesopeo 12" really is pretty great, i remember talking about how much i dug the b-side "communquis" sometime last year when it came out. i also picked up lexx's "axis shift" used the other day, almost forgot how good that tune is

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 19:26 (fifteen years ago) link

also- i haven't been able to find it on discogs, but is haitch talking about a permanent vacation volume 3 comp? if so, when is it coming out?

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 19:44 (fifteen years ago) link

oh nm it's probably this, found on the PV site...

thanx lex, that does look awesome. i think these are the new tracks...

5. Steve Yanko - Prostitute Pink
6. Permanent Vacation feat. Kathy Diamond - Tic Toc
11. Corduba - Cambio

can't wait to hear "tic toc", or any new single featuring kathy diamond for that matter (although that codebreaker song was sort of a letdown)

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Thursday, 26 March 2009 10:48 (fifteen years ago) link

Anyone know if this is a mixed album or not?

groovypanda, Thursday, 26 March 2009 11:26 (fifteen years ago) link

it's not mixed

lex pretend, Thursday, 26 March 2009 11:28 (fifteen years ago) link

cool, i was hoping it wasn't

groovypanda, Thursday, 26 March 2009 11:57 (fifteen years ago) link

the empire of the sun record maybe isnt proper balearic but the track "country" sounds like it came off the meanderthals record, a++

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Thursday, 26 March 2009 12:57 (fifteen years ago) link

lol at panthers appearance on this thread.

mizzell, Thursday, 26 March 2009 14:05 (fifteen years ago) link

That compilation looks like being a pretty great primer for the bouncier end of nu-Balearic.

Matt DC, Thursday, 26 March 2009 14:09 (fifteen years ago) link

This looks like a primer for how good permanent vacation has been recently.

BleepBot, Thursday, 26 March 2009 15:36 (fifteen years ago) link

that panther's remix is pretty amazing though, first holy ghost! remix i had ever heard and it's deserves to be on this thread because it is a) awesome and b) has those crunchy balearic guitars i love

tropical beards of paradise (san frandisco), Thursday, 26 March 2009 17:03 (fifteen years ago) link

i don't doubt it, it's just that I know some of the panthers guys and can't see them being into this stuff.

mizzell, Thursday, 26 March 2009 18:21 (fifteen years ago) link

also, even though it's not supposed to come out until may, i just bought mp3s of the meanderthals album off the smalltown site.

mizzell, Thursday, 26 March 2009 18:24 (fifteen years ago) link

The Meanderthals record is lovely.

Esp 1-800-288-slam

It's a guitar-freak album, really. Tons of overdubbed acoustics, FX-laden lead parts, violined reverbed textures going on in the background. Plus bongos. Lots of bongos.

Jamie T Smith, Friday, 27 March 2009 16:49 (fifteen years ago) link

the new compilation from Claremont 56 is pretty classy, Originals Vol. 2 compiled by Mark Seven. some classic housey stuff see Swayzak "Stronger Love", but mixed in with some real balearic classics. and IMO, the balearic track to end all balearic tracks, "Stars & Bars"

i posted to my blog if anyone wants to check it out

tropical beards of paradise (san frandisco), Friday, 27 March 2009 18:56 (fifteen years ago) link

I fucking love that track on there that sounds like Gary Numan goes balearic. Esp. when I looked at the credits and saw he was involved.

CosMc (Raw Patrick), Saturday, 28 March 2009 10:40 (fifteen years ago) link

finally got the meanderthals album, and it IS much better than the first track lets on actually (maybe not as good as the new l & pt tho ;) )

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 04:55 (fifteen years ago) link

My current listening seems to consist solely of the Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas, Meanderthals and Blackbelt Andersen albums and they're all so good.

Also, has anyone heard the free Smalltown Supersound CD with this month's issue of Plan B Magazine?

groovypanda, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 08:54 (fifteen years ago) link

Meanderthals is on emusic for download now: http://www.emusic.com/album/Meanderthals-Desire-Lines-MP3-Download/11417900.html

Ant, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 12:12 (fifteen years ago) link

^^ That's where I got it from. There's a free 14 day trial too that gives you 25 free MP3's and will cost you nothing as long as you remember to cancel your membership before the 14 days are up. I got the Meanderthals album and the tracks from that Tirk02 comp that I didn't already have.

groovypanda, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 12:39 (fifteen years ago) link

It's worth signing up (or at least it was for me). There's a loads of stuff there that fits in roughly this genre (and similar). I have 100 dls a month and never struggle to use them. All for the low low price of £18 or so. And if I refer you and you subscribe I get free downloads ;)

Ant, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 12:43 (fifteen years ago) link

Groovypanda, thanks a lot for those recommendations! I'm especially loving the Meanderthals, been enjoying it in the sun all day!

Gerard (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 20:12 (fifteen years ago) link

glad that someone else likes the blackbelt andersen finally! that album is so solid!

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 20:33 (fifteen years ago) link

^^^^ true true, my thread for it never really took off tho

maxsuxdix (san frandisco), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 20:43 (fifteen years ago) link

it's okay a track at a time. as an album length piece I can't get through it.

dmr, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 21:37 (fifteen years ago) link

ditto

(jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 21:46 (fifteen years ago) link

i really enjoy it start to finish, but not for focused listening. for work, being social, reading, it's really great! i do get bored with it a bit in headphones.

mikebee (BATTAGS), Thursday, 2 April 2009 08:20 (fifteen years ago) link

I don't know if this belongs here but it is very good:

Have you got any good recommendations for download from that emusic site?

groovypanda, Tuesday, 14 April 2009 10:23 (fifteen years ago) link

does anyone know if the bee gees edit on mark e's ra podcast ever got released? such a great track!

lucas pine, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 07:34 (fifteen years ago) link

yes

oh, pregnantpaws (haitch), Tuesday, 21 April 2009 07:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Is it this one? What a great track!

Gerard (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 21 April 2009 08:03 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm not really feeling the Meanderthals record.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Tuesday, 21 April 2009 08:41 (fifteen years ago) link

I nominated the Love You Inside Out edit for the 2008 trax poll, but none of you clowns voted for it. It IS great, but I almost wish he had stripped it down even more. I could listen to that first loop forever.

Jamie T Smith, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 09:07 (fifteen years ago) link

the plan b smalltown supersound cd is pretty good. pretty underwhelmed by the meanderthals track but plenty of solid old stuff like music in my mind

straightola, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 09:50 (fifteen years ago) link

Love You Inside Out 12" is in stock at Amoeba SF, we do mail order!

mikebee (BATTAGS), Tuesday, 21 April 2009 19:43 (fifteen years ago) link

how's this for balearic

(jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Tuesday, 21 April 2009 20:45 (fifteen years ago) link

ha yea i used that edit in a mix and someone was saying " i had no idea that feist song was a cover". now that makes a lot more sense

i am the eye in the sky... (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 21 April 2009 21:33 (fifteen years ago) link

the feist cover is pretty good imo

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Tuesday, 21 April 2009 21:54 (fifteen years ago) link

ya, better than the original, which gets a bit too schmaltzy for me, but no where close to the edit

(jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Tuesday, 21 April 2009 23:15 (fifteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...

Unfortunate title notwithstanding, Peter Visti's "Night Night Balearic Monster" is a worthy follow-up to "Flight Over Tokyo". Similar intense driving feel to it.

Tim F, Friday, 8 May 2009 08:37 (fourteen years ago) link

WTF that's a great title.
