Like anyone in showbiz, of course Letterman was self-regarding, but it was of an apolitical nature that at least had a solipsistic integrity about it (and was always leavened with his "I'm a jerk" ad libs which always sounded admirably sincere).

OTM. The decline began as soon as Steve Jordan left the band and that ham-fisted fuck Anton Fig took over on drums. And when the band started to play pre-composed theme music for the bits instead of just flailing with Paul yelling "Yeah!" repeatedly.
