for the life of me i cannot figure what the game plan is at yahoo but hey if you're gonna burn money either way i approve of this effort

da croupier, Monday, 30 June 2014 22:09 (nine years ago) link

did the Arrested Development thing work out well for Netflix? it seems like reviving a cult comedy is a decent idea for a streaming service but creating dramas that people will want to binge watch ended up being far more beneficial to them. if nothing else it beats Amazon Prime's strategy of creating new half hour comedies that nobody gives a damn about enough to even form a cult around.

some dude, Monday, 30 June 2014 22:13 (nine years ago) link

i don't think "yahoo screen" a netflix/amazon prime type deal in the first place

da croupier, Monday, 30 June 2014 22:17 (nine years ago) link

smart in that i now know there is something called yahoo screen

balls, Monday, 30 June 2014 22:19 (nine years ago) link

it's basically a wanna-be youtube so this will be ad revenue-based not subscriber

da croupier, Monday, 30 June 2014 22:19 (nine years ago) link

oh wait they removed the ability to upload, so i guess it's a wanna-be hulu only with no network content?

da croupier, Monday, 30 June 2014 22:20 (nine years ago) link

https://screen.yahoo.com/

the future is now

da croupier, Monday, 30 June 2014 22:22 (nine years ago) link

"ugh, i hate going to hulu to watch snl clips and going to youtube to watch vevo shit! there HAS to be a better way!"

"now there is!"

Yahoo did the three seasons of Burning Love, so this is probably a good fit. On the other hand, I forgot they existed since they geoblocked Burning Love halfway through the first season and wouldn't put it on the Australian version.

boney tassel (sic), Monday, 30 June 2014 22:38 (nine years ago) link

yeah from what i can tell it's not a subscription service. arrested development worked in that it got a ton of attention and subscribers for netflix. opinion is mixed on how well it worked creatively (i'm pro, esp the last half, but i think it's definitely fair to say there was more buzz beforehand than afterward) and who knows on the data but netflix doesn't seem to be in a huge hurry to due a half hour comedy while they have no problem renewing lillehammer or spawning new seasons of the killing. comedies were pretty big to hulu (initially at least) so who knows but it does seem like dramas have an edge in streaming like they do on network tv. cable seems more mixed - sunny is arguably the biggest hit fx has had and girls probably does more for hbo's brand than any show other than game of thrones; it's weird cuz yeah house of cards got huge attention and buzz for netflix and it has standard prestige drama dressings but it was kind of astroturfed success. orange is the new black is the organic hit and i'm not sure exactly what lessons can be learned from it.

balls, Monday, 30 June 2014 23:10 (nine years ago) link

i misspelled 'do'

balls, Monday, 30 June 2014 23:11 (nine years ago) link

I wonder if I'll ever watch the fifth season

polyphonic, Monday, 30 June 2014 23:13 (nine years ago) link

It was okay-to-great while it was happening, but I barely remember any of it now except for when Dean Pelton dressed up like a Payday bar and rapped in the study room—which was probably the funniest scene in the history of the show.

i always vaguely knew that Burning Love was on the internet somewhere before it aired on E! but i had no idea where. good to know, maybe this means that some months after the new Community episodes go online they'll put them on after The Soup as part of a Joel McHale power hour.

some dude, Monday, 30 June 2014 23:19 (nine years ago) link

there was something autumnal about season 5, like they'd accepted their lot as a sweet little cult show. can't imagine the yahoo season will be any different.

da croupier, Monday, 30 June 2014 23:21 (nine years ago) link

i doubt they'll truly go insane over the relative freedom of the net cuz i assume sony still wants to air those episodes in syndication

da croupier, Monday, 30 June 2014 23:23 (nine years ago) link

i think the only thing that kept them from turning outright into an Adult Swim-style revolving door of pop culture pastiches was some sense of fidelity to the characters and the 23-minute sitcom formula. i don't get the sense that they'd change a lot with 'more freedom,' i just hope that the inevitably smaller budget with Yahoo is spread over fewer episodes so it doesn't suddenly look way cheaper or completely scale back on the playful special effects stuff.

some dude, Monday, 30 June 2014 23:33 (nine years ago) link

Community is about 20 minutes, not 23, and they're doing the same number of episodes as S5.

boney tassel (sic), Tuesday, 1 July 2014 00:06 (nine years ago) link

Indeed, Vulture hears the production budget for Community’s sixth season will not be dramatically different than the most recent NBC season of the show.

boney tassel (sic), Tuesday, 1 July 2014 00:13 (nine years ago) link

gonna say, this show's gone from being nbc's least treasured show to yahoo's most treasured - budget's probably not that diff

da croupier, Tuesday, 1 July 2014 00:20 (nine years ago) link

kinda wonder if this last minute reveal came down to yahoo being the safety choice

da croupier, Tuesday, 1 July 2014 00:21 (nine years ago) link

It sounds like the negotiations went to last minute because Sony's contracts expire tomorrow.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 1 July 2014 00:22 (nine years ago) link

It was either that or the Food Channel.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 1 July 2014 00:26 (nine years ago) link

mmm brie

balls, Tuesday, 1 July 2014 00:27 (nine years ago) link

Hulu only passed last week, contracts expired yesterday, Sony has been negotiating with different partners for months

boney tassel (sic), Tuesday, 1 July 2014 00:49 (nine years ago) link

yeah i can't imagine sony WANTED to go with a service best known for providing Burning Love episodes before they air on E!

da croupier, Tuesday, 1 July 2014 00:58 (nine years ago) link

We were in pretty advanced conversations with Hulu and we had made a half-dozen or so phone calls to other places. Then out of the blue — and this never happens — I got the best phone call in the world from Yahoo selling us on why Yahoo would be great destination [for Community]. To be honest, we were so far down the path with Hulu that, hopefully not arrogant but [we were], maybe a little bit dismissive of their overture, which made them that much more committed to explaining to us and to Joel McHale and Dan Harmon why this was going to be a cornerstone of the new Yahoo that they're about to unveil to the world. They really want to be close to their users and viewers and wanted it to be a safe destination for creators. It was an excellent and articulate speech.

We will not cut any money from what we were doing on the broadcast version of the show. No low-cost digital whatever; Yahoo was spectacular with that and told us how much they stand for quality. You haven't seen a whole slew of announcements out of them but when they make announcements, they want them to be loud and to stand for something. They really were beyond supportive with understanding the production demands of a sixth-year show. They are fully supporting it in their deal and beyond; it's pretty historic.

Hopefully Donald Glover will come back to his senses for a final season. Probably not though

Nhex, Tuesday, 1 July 2014 05:12 (nine years ago) link

yeah chances of that are close to nil.

Clay, Tuesday, 1 July 2014 05:21 (nine years ago) link

two months pass...

aw man

Nhex, Tuesday, 30 September 2014 23:49 (nine years ago) link

I don't care what Yvette says about no one character being bigger than the show. No Shirley, no credibility.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 1 October 2014 00:02 (nine years ago) link

one month passes...

Paget Brewster, Keith David added to cast.

Aw, she's not playing the same character.

Nhex, Monday, 10 November 2014 21:52 (nine years ago) link

damn, i'm over this show but i love paget brewster.

you little affront to god (reddening), Tuesday, 11 November 2014 07:04 (nine years ago) link

yesss i love Paget Brewster too. and Keith David was hysterical on Enlisted.

nakhchi little van (some dude), Tuesday, 11 November 2014 09:22 (nine years ago) link

I only know David from Bird and his narration on Montgomery Burns' Jazz series. Whenever I hear his voice, I feel like he's about to say something snottily disdainful about the Art Ensemble of Chicago.

i've loved keith david ever since i was 12 and saw his amazingly drawn-out alley fight with roddy piper in they live

i was gonna say ALL-TIME

Nhex, Tuesday, 11 November 2014 14:25 (nine years ago) link

Did Keith David not do the narration for the Burns doc spoof episode(s)?

franny glasshole (franny glass), Tuesday, 11 November 2014 14:26 (nine years ago) link

I think you're right.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 11 November 2014 14:37 (nine years ago) link

Also, he was Goliath in Gargoyles. GOLIATH!

Nhex, Tuesday, 11 November 2014 19:26 (nine years ago) link

I'm still not planning to watch any of this, btw.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 11 November 2014 19:38 (nine years ago) link

Is there some kind of paid Yahoo subscription we're going to have to get to watch these? Because... well I'll probably just download it somewhere else then.

Nhex, Tuesday, 11 November 2014 20:12 (nine years ago) link

I think they're going to try to do this with ad support only, but we'll see how long that lasts.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 11 November 2014 20:32 (nine years ago) link

hey yahoo's been on the "we'll see how long that lasts" bubble for quite a while now

da croupier, Tuesday, 11 November 2014 20:34 (nine years ago) link

paying for a sitcom is a drop in the bucket

da croupier, Tuesday, 11 November 2014 20:35 (nine years ago) link

for Yahoo this is like pocket lint... I'm still not sure why they're bothering, but hey, at least one good (?) thing will come out of their experimentation

Nhex, Tuesday, 11 November 2014 20:47 (nine years ago) link
