City centre pint sounds like a good idea Ailsa.

The Belle & Seb TV recording was fun. Hopefully you'll be able to spot me in the crowd shots with my big stripy scarf on. Played 8 new songs which were pretty sweet, although I'm not sure I heard anything to match the best stuff from Dear Catastrophe Waitress (ie Stay Loose and Wrapped Up In Books). They've got a nice wistful ballad called Mornington Crescent and one that sounds like Jean Genie and has Stevie playing a ROCK geetar solo. Well, as ROCK as B&S can be... There's also a few swears in the new song. What is the world coming to?
Disappointingly the Beeb only gave us orange juice and water though. When I was in the audience for Trial By Night at Grampian studios a few years back we got wine and snacks!

That's because you would have to be pissed to be in any way involved in Trial By Night. God, that was horrendous television (of course, I watched it every week).

Were Belle and Sebastian all 70s-ed up as well? There are people complaining on s*n*st*r that Belle and Sebastian are wrong to start dictating what sort of style of clothes and hair their fans can and can't wear, as if they've gone down the route of creating some sort of Stepford Fan rather than, you know, asking extras in a TV show to dress appropriately for the TV show.

hopefully I will LIVE in glasgow by 11/11

this should make the south side venture much more viable

c7n (Cozen), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 21:13 (eighteen years ago) link

Belle & Seb were dressed in their normal manner, so kinda 70s I suppose. Stuart had his stripey school blazer on, Mick had an excellent printed shirt, Stevie was in black as always ;) Richard was the only "modern" one, along with the sk8r boi sax player. Thing is most Belle & Seb fans look 70s anyway. It wasn't especially strict, they just wanted it to look a bit retro, hence using one of the older studios in Queen Margaret Drive. I defied the no trainers rule by wearing my converse - well, they're more authentically 70s than most shoes. The dressing up was fun anyway. Can't wait until Halloween Pop League.

I actually spoke on one episode of Trial By Night. Thankfully I've never actually seen it cos I forgot to set the video. Alan Taylor of the Sunday Herald was arguing that Princess Anne should be Queen Of Scots, to which my finger wagging 18 year old self replied "The monarchy is an undemocratic anachronism and should have no place in the devolved Scotland". Boo ya! I must have sounded awfully pompous, but it's fair enough. I suggested an Irish style presidency, to which AT said, "Many people consider Mary Robinson to be rather impotent", prompting much sniggering at the back.
When I was doing work experience at the Sunday Herald a few years later AT was doing the rounds, harumphing about "that bloody Rowling woman". I didn't bring up the Trial By Night thingy, maybe I should have...

Stew (stew s), Tuesday, 25 October 2005 21:27 (eighteen years ago) link

yes, you should. although i can only assume that AT's stance on the original show was one of pure devil's advocacy.

can anyone tell me about the maps/diagrams in buchanan st bus station, they are large floor mounted ones with raised profiles, designed for visually impaired people. anyone know what i am talking about? they sound pretty cool, at any rate. i am trying to find out what people think about them

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 12:58 (eighteen years ago) link

they do sound cool, but ... i've not been in the bus station for ages, and i certainly didn't notice them last time i was there. sorry.

See the bit under 'Accessibility' on this page:

Mooro (Mooro), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 17:26 (eighteen years ago) link

i've noticed that map, ambrose. seemed like a good idea but the map seemed to be oriented on a different axis from the station itself which was confusing. also it wasnt that well made so bits were coming off of it.

Yeah, I thought as much. I never had him down as a monarchist.

I'll try go up during the week and take some pics ambrose

c7n (Cozen), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 18:39 (eighteen years ago) link

Can I just make it clear that I thought the guy on s*n*st*r accusing Belle and Sebastian of Stepfordising their fans was a bit out of order.

I don't look 70s at all. I wouldn't have got in.

I liked Alan Taylor's devil's advocate role on Trial By Night. I seemed to spend a lot of time shouting at the telly at the gross stupidity and annoyingness of that Charlene person who used to co-present, was she deliberately hired to make AT look better?

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 21:29 (eighteen years ago) link

That's cool Ailsa, I didn't think you were agreeing with the s*n*st*r bloke.

I think we're talking different Alan Taylors here. Was the presenter called AT as well? That guy disappeared off to Sky, haven't seen him for years. The guy arguing the devil's advocate Queen Anne of Scots thing was Alan Taylor, Sunday Herald diarist and JK Rowling dissenter.

Went to see Part Chimp at Stereo this evening. Was a bit of a mini TGM outing as I saw Ally and his lovely flatmates there. Ver Chimp rrrrrocked!

Stew (stew s), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 23:02 (eighteen years ago) link

Only one flatmate, one part-time flatmate. Was pretty rockin', anyhow! I stayed at the back most of the time like a wuss.

I saw at the gig a girl who used to be in my little brother and sister's year at school (who I haven't seen for years), who will shortly be working for the paper I will be interviewed by next week, who was at the same party as me on Friday without me knowing and whose old next door neighbour was the guy who emailed D2D yesterday asking to be on the mailing list. This is why I love Glasgow.

Ally C (Ally C), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 23:22 (eighteen years ago) link

What paper is your interview with? Good luck, I should add.

Stew (stew s), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 23:33 (eighteen years ago) link

What I really hated about that s*n*s*e* post was the guy began "I am writing with reference to Lucy's post". Also, he was a twat. Like a good girl, I kept my response off list.

What paper?

Is anyone else coming out on the 11th? RJG? Alba? I have a possible 11, so will need to know if numbers are to increase further.

A quick google shows that Alan Tyler was the presenter of Trial by Night, which is who I thought you were talking about.

Can I be on the D2D mailing list Ally? Otherwise I will be out of the loop.

ps. who is a dick?
pps. Ally and I are going to Optimo next Sunday (6th Nov). Advance notice. I don't think the band playing looks very good, but you never know. They said that about Van Gogh.

I'll come on the 11th if that's OK. I don't understand this Cathouse prank.

yay the 11th. as for the cathouse: as you well know, it's a ROCK CLUB for people who ROCK. or for very sad old men hoping for a glimpse of robert plant squeezing his lemon into some unsuspecting girl's G&T.

somehow i didn't think this would float yr boat, alba.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 28 October 2005 15:44 (eighteen years ago) link

I was told it was more of a goth club. Do you dress up in PVC and that when you go?

or for very sad old men hoping for a glimpse of robert plant squeezing his lemon into some unsuspecting girl's G&T.

I assume this is some sexual practice I don't know about. Educate me!

Alba (Alba), Friday, 28 October 2005 15:54 (eighteen years ago) link

I used to like the Cathouse years ago. I haven't been for about four or five years, but I bet it hasn't changed much.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 28 October 2005 16:07 (eighteen years ago) link

I like seeing the goths queueing outside the cathouse. It makes me nostalgic.

Cathy (Cathy), Friday, 28 October 2005 16:10 (eighteen years ago) link

Ah, misunderstanding. I am not being interviewed for a job.

A girl at work says the Cathouse at Halloween is where pervy old men go to look at young girls in red pvc outfits. I trust that Madchen will have her boys under some form of control.

PS Yeah, Optimo.
PPS Done, PJ.

Ally C (Ally C), Friday, 28 October 2005 16:40 (eighteen years ago) link

Boys means boobs, yes?

Alba (Alba), Friday, 28 October 2005 16:42 (eighteen years ago) link

It's not Hallowe'en yet though. So no perving tonight. Except at Madchen's out of control boys, obviously.

Paisley will be awash with girls in nasty PVC nurses uniforms like Lesley out of Big Brother this weekend (as it was last year around Hallowe'en time). Possibly exacerbated by the recent opening of a "lingerie" shop in the town centre which sells "sexy" outfits of that nature. I will be avoiding like, well, like I normally avoid Paisley at the weekend.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 28 October 2005 17:04 (eighteen years ago) link

Is it true that they do actually still have the Plague in Paisley?

Alba (Alba), Friday, 28 October 2005 17:10 (eighteen years ago) link

There is a plague of women who think they look attractive in PVC nurses uniforms at least.

Paisley, however, is lovely otherwise (honest) if you stay in the town centre and I repeat my request for you all to come through and eat nice food at Raeburns some time. We can go straight back to Glasgow for pubbage afterwards though.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 28 October 2005 17:12 (eighteen years ago) link

no goths at the cathouse

just the myspace street team

c7n (Cozen), Friday, 28 October 2005 17:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Ally could go there and be fellated.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 28 October 2005 17:21 (eighteen years ago) link
