Cognitive dissonance: I simultaneously really like Surfer Blood and concede they're kind of a perfect band for this gig

I think I've only ever really looked at the food pages and not seen what the wider context on that site was. Do keep coming across pics of scantily clad babes on there, but not thought about what such a thing as a Chive lifestyle might be. To me up until reading that the founding brothers were talking about a recognised lifestyle it might have just meant people being creative with food.
So hate to think what it does actually mean. Swaggering with realistic cake effigies of bling lifestyle?

Just realized their "Funny" category has a subcategory just called "Foreigners". Yup.

about the time of chive fest chicago I saw a group of brosephy dudes in a suspension and body-lifted diesel dodge ram pickup with a keep calm and chive flag on a pole mounted in the bed make an illegal turn-around in a bus terminal and fuck up traffic at an intersection near my house, then roar off up the street at high speed

that pretty much told me everything I needed to know

i think it's mostly that?

I don't think the Ivy disdain is made-up—especially if you bring in, say, the top 25-40 schools in that US News list underneath the "Ivy" umbrella. There's a strain of anti-elitism throughout the Chive piece that seems very in tune with the way people who were involved in frats and sororities in school bristle at the way "Greek life" is spoken of in popular culture—why are these nerds trying to impinge on our fun, we work hard and deserve to play hard even though we might not have fancy credentials, etc. (It's not entirely unwarranted, either—just look at how many new hires at the Times are from Harvard or Yale or etc.)

The Chive is the Junior League of the Buffett/Chesney "It's All Good" ideal in a lot of ways; thanks to its younger skew and insular online-community nature there's even more open ogling of things like thigh gaps (lol).

Damn, used to enjoy looking at the food stuff. Almost wish I hadn't heard about the rest of the package.

Stevolende, Sunday, 13 July 2014 15:02 (nine years ago) link

The majority of people in middle America, even those with college degrees, don't really consider Ivy League schools as much more than a kind of elitist curiosity in my experience.
I have no idea what fraternities are like at ivies, or how they differ from those at state universities, but the implication is that fratty dudes don't exist at ivies and that "college dudes" are some lesser class.

mh, Sunday, 13 July 2014 15:23 (nine years ago) link

Tbh well into my 20s I wasn't even sure if Harvard and Yale were in the American or the UK.

I've witnessed about 30-50 people at a Princeton reunion crowded in a circle around a shirtless man who was chugging dangerous amounts of beer for their entertainment. Got a very "Decline of Rome" vibe from this spectacle.

Treeship, Sunday, 13 July 2014 15:30 (nine years ago) link

Makes sense that Bill Murray is their icon. Boobs from the heyday, absurd without being activist, life loving, etc.

heavy on their trademark ballads (Eazy), Sunday, 13 July 2014 15:39 (nine years ago) link

I was stumbling in my comparison there, but I think the point is that there's definitely an undercurrent of anti-elitism and a shared mentality among chive fans, but "non-ivy colleges" as a line seems to say more about the writer than the chivers.

mh, Sunday, 13 July 2014 15:54 (nine years ago) link

it kinda makes me feel bad for Murray. he made frigging Meatballs so it's not like none of his work projects this vibe, but still anyone becoming the unwitting mascot of someone else's media empire is some bullshit xp

some dude, Sunday, 13 July 2014 15:58 (nine years ago) link

I think it's a caricature fueled by him being a goofball in real life -- crashing parties, photobombing, being in serious work yet being a comedian. There's also an elder statesman type of thing going on where a younger role model wouldn't fit the bill. Uh, pun unintended.

It's kind of funny that there are scenes of Joel Murray blasting away near-chive types in that God Bless America movie from a couple years back.

Googled around on this yesterday, figured they couldn't just appropriate his image.

Anyway, they sponsored his charity golf tourney (maybe the charity sponsorship is the tradeoff):

yeah i'm sure he's aware of it now and has possibly given some kind of permission. i just mean Bill Murray is kind of a beloved figure across many different demographics/generations and i feel bad that this particular group of dingbats decided he was THEIRS.

"keep calm and chive on" = "it just doesn't matter"?

slugbuggy, Sunday, 13 July 2014 22:54 (nine years ago) link

A big part of the fantasy is that real live girls, girls who like the Chive just like you do, send you—well, the Chive—raunchy photos of themselves, totally free and by their own will. And best of all, it’s not really porn, and it’s right in there next to cat photos and fun facts about science. It's “just fun": the photos (and their perusal) are shed of the stigma that normal porn receives. And, in some ways, maybe these photos are better than regular porn. This is the aesthetic that amateur porn chases: selfies in the bathroom mirror, private sexts and videos, and the eroticism of willingness that you don’t get when you know the woman in the video is being paid. These girls, the fantasy goes, want to fuck you because you’re a Chiver. For no other reason than the fact that you like funny videos, girls, drinking, and being a good person, all these girls are (theoretically) yours. Add in some immature humor, good deeds, and cute puppy faces, and the Chive is a great place to be for some people.

I didn't get enough credit for this dn.

how's life, Sunday, 13 July 2014 23:01 (nine years ago) link

what's interesting about that is that when I hear about something for the first time from, like, two or three different places, it's usually because it's rapidly growing. But from that chart it looks like Chive plateaued two years ago. Except for some reason huge uptick in mobile use without any corresponding change in web use over the last month? So maybe the point is they just launched an app or something? Somebody who knows the business, explain this to me.

The other interesting thing I've noticed is that both people (female) that regularly post Chive related stuff on my social media also post tons of religious/Christian stuff (God quotes, Christian music links, etc). Wondering if these are just outliers, or if there is more of an overlap there as well (which seems unlikely, but worth noting).

i'm still a bit confused as to where exactly that sense of belonging lies. quite a weird quirk that one of the biggest communities on the internet is a website that has little in the way of user communication.

Merdeyeux, Monday, 14 July 2014 15:01 (nine years ago) link

that might be part of the key; actually communicating is a bit scary

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 14 July 2014 15:48 (nine years ago) link

It's not communication that indicates belonging, it's seeing ppl who look like you, consume the same things, and being able to locate yourself in the security of that mass.
