― keep calm and nahkchivan (how's life)

I didn't get enough credit for this dn.

how's life, Sunday, 13 July 2014 23:01 (nine years ago) link

what's interesting about that is that when I hear about something for the first time from, like, two or three different places, it's usually because it's rapidly growing. But from that chart it looks like Chive plateaued two years ago. Except for some reason huge uptick in mobile use without any corresponding change in web use over the last month? So maybe the point is they just launched an app or something? Somebody who knows the business, explain this to me.

Yeah but I don't think five times as many people uses their phone in June 2014 as did in May 2014.

also how great is it that their "mascot" is somebody they have no relationship with who made movies they identified with 20 years ago and their slogan is a ripoff of a meme popular like four years ago and most of their content is photos somebody grabbed from reddit or something.

its sort of amazing

iirc it was s1ocki on the other thread who deployed "normy-net" in a wonderful turn of phrase.

The other interesting thing I've noticed is that both people (female) that regularly post Chive related stuff on my social media also post tons of religious/Christian stuff (God quotes, Christian music links, etc). Wondering if these are just outliers, or if there is more of an overlap there as well (which seems unlikely, but worth noting).

Feels like two overlapping parts of Red State goodwill, the same friendliness that hands a stranger a beer at a frat party.

"Uncritical ppl who want to belong" is the shared category here probably.

LIKE If you are against racism (omar little), Monday, 14 July 2014 14:56 (nine years ago) link

i'm still a bit confused as to where exactly that sense of belonging lies. quite a weird quirk that one of the biggest communities on the internet is a website that has little in the way of user communication.

Merdeyeux, Monday, 14 July 2014 15:01 (nine years ago) link

that might be part of the key; actually communicating is a bit scary

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 14 July 2014 15:48 (nine years ago) link

It's not communication that indicates belonging, it's seeing ppl who look like you, consume the same things, and being able to locate yourself in the security of that mass.

what the hell

in related news, i saw a family of man, woman and three small kids all wearing 'keep calm and chive on' tshirts at disneyworld a couple of weeks ago, it was weird and creepy

bizarro gazzara, Thursday, 27 August 2015 13:26 (eight years ago) link

Thank you for this thread. I recently happened upon a pair of magic sunglasses that allow me to finally fully register this 'KEEP CALM AND CHIVE ON' thing that is everywhere but that I'd somehow previously managed to ignore. Glad to see some confirmation that it's just as sinister as its vague, jovial ubiquity would suggest.

My wife shared some chive image on fb the other day, but as far as I can tell she was just sharing it from some other fb friend. She has a long-standing crush on Bill Murray though, so who knows, maybe I should just sign her up?

So much in one paragraph:

The Chive’s founders, brothers Leo and John Resig, have so effectively branded a certain kind of lifestyle and identity that the membership, from giving to submitting, does most of the work itself. (Leo Resig declined to comment for this article, though he said he was a “big fan” of The Awl.) They live in Venice, California, and the site's name, by the way, is apparently a contraction of Chicago and Venice; the Resigs were born in Fort Wayne, Indiana. They have other interests as well: John Resig is a recurring minor character on "True Blood." Their sisters, Emily and Megan, are the editors of the sister site the Berry, which "gives ladies a much needed one-stop destination to peruse hot male celebs, funny photos, daily gossip, fashion, viral videos and adorable animals," and features an "eye candy" section of dudes in the same space where The Chive features its Chivettes. The Berry gets a bit more than 10% of the traffic of The Chive, according to Quantcast. The company's other sub-sites, The Throttle—pictures of hot cars—and The Brigade—tagline "In 'Merica We Trust," with lots of photos of guns, tanks and uniforms—skew even more male, about 80%, and are about the same size as the Berry.
