The Austin exiles I know in Brooklyn don't say much different.

"cult or no, if I went to see my favorite band and they talked a bunch of ignorant shit about my hometown/state, I wouldn't have to think twice about with whom I had stronger loyalties.

-- Al (hoteloper...), February 10th, 2005.

Really? This is too fuckin' sad. Bonehead tribalism at its worst.

Oberst's rant was ignorantly put, and he probably is a douche and all, but what he said about Texas is basically true. Worst state in the union, by far.

MV, Thursday, 10 February 2005 21:59 (nineteen years ago) link

This band should change their name to Brown Eyes.

cdwill, Thursday, 10 February 2005 22:16 (nineteen years ago) link

I guess you all hate the Dixie Chicks, too.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 10 February 2005 22:26 (nineteen years ago) link

And yes, I know that they made their comments in England.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 10 February 2005 22:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Excellent point, MV. So you won't mind if I say fuck you and where you're from and everyone from where your from, then, will you?

Austin (Austin), Thursday, 10 February 2005 22:37 (nineteen years ago) link

In fact, it's even dumber than that, because George W Bush and his whole evil fucking family are from Connecticut, not Texas.

Like, whoah!

Austin (Austin), Thursday, 10 February 2005 22:40 (nineteen years ago) link

texas, as a state, rules. Plus, greatest football team / coach of all time.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Thursday, 10 February 2005 22:42 (nineteen years ago) link

I was with y'all 'til the football thing. If Roger is talking about the Cowboys, I'm going to have to agree with Sarah Conor or whatever his name is.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 10 February 2005 22:52 (nineteen years ago) link

maybe he looked out at the audience and had a flash: "the jig is up"
and then felt insecure. . .oh wait, that's his whole thing, innit?

noizem duke (noize duke), Thursday, 10 February 2005 22:55 (nineteen years ago) link

[Parts of] Texas, as a state, rule. Like, everything west of Dallas. I could do without East Texas, let Louisiana have Deliverance-lite country. (ps fuck the Cowboys and their new stadium that I have to pay for. I hope Jerry Jones's face melts the next time he's in for botox and a lift.)

I imagine Bill Hicks' could have done a great routine on sensitive-guy rock like Bright Eyes.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 10 February 2005 22:55 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm going to have to agree with Sarah Conor or whatever his name is.

I think I'd respect Conor more if he were a bit more like this:

Seriously, what a dumbass. If you don't like the state, don't play goddamn shows in it.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:21 (nineteen years ago) link

Of course, it's not surprising given how juvenile his "political" songwriting is.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Ok, but they're FROM Texas, so they have a little more right.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:26 (nineteen years ago) link

When I curse Texas, I do it out of love.

Worst state in the union, by far.

Hardly.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 11 February 2005 00:01 (nineteen years ago) link

It's in the bottom five.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 11 February 2005 00:04 (nineteen years ago) link

I submit that Wyoming is the worst. Claim to fame? Dick Cheney.

Rounding out the bottom five are Montana, North Dakota, Alaska, and your pick of any state with endless stretches of nothing.

Matt Chesnut, Friday, 11 February 2005 00:06 (nineteen years ago) link

Bottom ten, maybe. But Austin is probably one of the 10 coolest cities in the US.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 11 February 2005 00:07 (nineteen years ago) link

no state that big that effectively has no winter can be that bad. (x-post)

Al (sitcom), Friday, 11 February 2005 00:07 (nineteen years ago) link

and your pick of any state with endless stretches of nothing.

Like Texas?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 11 February 2005 00:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Endless stretches of nothing is underrated.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 11 February 2005 00:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Like Texas?

California even. Of course the difference is that after travelling for hours through endless stretches of nothing you finally arrive at something without having crossed a border.

Endless stretches of nothing is underrated.

I liked ESN's earlier stuff better.

I wouldn't trust exiles either. Hey, I don't know if I'd move back to rural IL anytime soon, and there are some "red state" proclivities in the area I grew up in, but fuck anyone from there who would leave and talk shit about what a shithole rural IL is.

One of my best friends here is from near Austin (and other parts of the state at other times), left-wing tendencies, probably going to move to Europe one of these days, and she loves Texas whilst hating Bush. She goes back all the time because she misses it so much. She told me once she gets tired of defending Texas because of Bush and for other reasons related to the misguided perspective of outsiders and "elitist assholes" who think everything outside of Austin is a wasteland.

I wish someone would tell New York to go fuck itself once in a while. It might do it some good.

"But as the night wore on and he drained yet another bottle of beer, Mr. Oberst turned surly"

can't wait for the recovering alkie album, sure to come down the line. or book:
"Once from a stage in Fort Worth I pilloried the great state of Texas. I was tired of the road, tired of having to play some dumb shit I came up with off the top of my head, and especially of the trick where I just repeated a portentous phrase over and over, sometimes even three or four or fifteen thousand times, every song.
My drummer was really good though. I noticed he seldom drank.
Then of course I met Bono..."

Conor Oberst = '05's Ryan Adams?

cdwill, Friday, 11 February 2005 01:25 (nineteen years ago) link

I'd rather hear Dashboard Confessional

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Friday, 11 February 2005 01:33 (nineteen years ago) link

Ryan Adams was far more entertaining than Oberst.

You should get out to Enchanted Rock when the weather improves. It's really lovely there.

Austin (Austin), Friday, 11 February 2005 04:51 (nineteen years ago) link

I find the "Austin is different from the rest of Texas" meme tiring. Austin is boring. The music scene isn't appreciably better than elsewhere in the state. The arts scene isn't. Sixth Street - a bunch of middle-class white kids drinking heavily? Seen it. But at least you pay a lot more for the privilege of living in Austin.

I'd rather live in Denton, El Paso, parts of Ft. Worth, even Dallas over Austin. If Houston wasn't dirty and humid, it would place higher.

Is Austin preferable to, say, Waco or some little scary town on the LA border? Yes. That's not saying much.

i'll be happy to curse NYC from the stage, if you want, Hurting. Next time I'm there to play, which will probably be early March, I'll say how much I despise New York - the smarmy delicate bitch of all states. A playground for the shallow, rich and very stupid alike.
