Cancel Tosh.0 with extreme prejudice, return Jeselnik.

There are no funny Australian people comedians.. or maybe it's only the unfunny ones who insist on infecting Edinburgh this time every year (ditto Irishers).

..infesting .. wtf's up with this stupid phone, doesn't know the word 'infesting'?

i fking hate jeselnick. all that casual misogyny reminds me of dudes from my hometown. which is a sick burn if you know anything about my bogany hometown.

SEEMS TO ME (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 7 August 2014 04:39 (nine years ago) link

Hate Jeselnik, love Schumer, have resigned myself to the fact that Daniel Tosh will continue to be famous whether I like it or not.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 7 August 2014 06:08 (nine years ago) link

love Jeselnik, love Schumer, glad Tosh doesn’t exist in my world.

saw Jeselnik unannounced trying out new material in LA last year, and it was super-delightful to see him semi-out of character – as in he’d go mostly into it for each bit, but introed himself, and would banter between them, while being smiley and meta. “You liked that? You people are sick,” while drawing a tick beside that one on his notes; saying he wouldn’t do this one, but would give it to Aziz or Pete Holmes, but wanted us to hear it; “No? Not for my voice? But you can see how it would be funny, right?”

boney tassel (sic), Thursday, 7 August 2014 07:42 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, he's very clever about how he presents his material - always makes a point to remind the audience he's in character (but never so much that it takes away from the 'I can't believe that guy said that' shock). It's a tricky balance!

For me the shocking subject matter is pretty much second to his craftsmanship - he clearly works hard at the structure and timing of jokes without being boring about it.

He reminds me of a guy in the UK named Gary Delaney, who is an incredible one-liner guy whose jokes are often built around funny misdirection and wordplay.

Walter Galt, Thursday, 7 August 2014 09:23 (nine years ago) link

was about to pass out last nite when i decided to check the last thing by buress; my drunk judgement made me quit about 10 minutes into it...(i was done anyway) his flow was so fast, "happening", sort of like kevin hart or something. did he figured that others were "happening" and it might as well be him so he just stop doing that stuff "most people" hated ... sounds like the setup of a joke he could have made. will have to get back to it with a clearer head in any case.

Cancel Tosh.0 with extreme prejudice, return Jeselnik.

probably won't happen anytime soon, ratings or no Comedy Central loves anything that's cheap and moderately successful, so a show where 80% of the content is just out there on the internet is probably sticking around. btw I think it's weird to dislike Tosh but not Jeselnik, to me they're pretty much the same. Jeselnik is a bit more clever but I find his delivery to be super irritating

otm, he can get three twists into a short two-liner.

and afair any "casual misogyny" in his act is jokes about casual misogyny. he took Cameron Esposito on tour as his post-TV-show support act, if that says anything about the message he's trying to send to an audience about who he wants his audience to be.

boney tassel (sic), Thursday, 7 August 2014 14:36 (nine years ago) link

Jeselnik seems good as a writer but i feel like his delivery is TOO slow and deliberate, almost like he's concentrating too hard on remembering the exact wording. actually preferred his CC show to his standup because he had a prompter and kept it moving.

some dude, Thursday, 7 August 2014 15:08 (nine years ago) link

He *definitely* tells misogynistic jokes that it would be a stretch to say are about misogyny*. But you never believe that he believes what he's saying, and I think it works.

* He has a bit where he goes "I met this gorgeous woman in a bar the other night - she looked like a model. I asked her what she does for a living, and she told me she's a brain surgeon. Obviously my jaw dropped a little TOO much, and she kind of defensively said "what?!" and I was like "God, sorry for seeming surprised - usually attractive women don't do sarcasm."

(is it uncool to type gags from peoples' acts? Is that like a spoiler?)

so i got tickets to see Wyatt next month. then there was a Chappelle show announced and i jumped on that, and it turns out they're the same night. luckily i got tix for the early Chappelle set, so i can head down the street afterward and catch them both, crazy.

festival culture (Jordan), Thursday, 25 September 2014 15:25 (nine years ago) link

saw Wyatt last night, in a concrete-floored basement without seats. turns out this is not an ideal environment to see stand-up.

I was charmed by a jena Friedman set recently and have been watching YouTube vids. I saw her in a lineup that included Judah Friedlander and Amy Schumer and liked her best fwiw.

Yeah, a lot of people know about it all, but never say a word because Bill Cosby the entertainer is so lovable (unlike, by all accounts, Bill Cosby the person). Hannibal Burress is a fucking badass.

watched like half of the new Lucas Bros special. Something about their schtick doesn't quite work - they don't go all-in on the possibilities of the twin-comedy-duo premise, but then their being twins distracts from the more pedestrian material. I found myself constantly thinking about how they trade lines and switch off, even when it had nothing to do with the content of the jokes, and then wondering if it would be funnier if I were just watching one guy do the same material instead of two guys interrupting each other and making interjections (so many "uh huh", "yup", "right" etc.) It wasn't bad and I did laugh at a bunch of the jokes tho, but it was a weird viewing experience.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 21 June 2017 17:12 (six years ago) link

tried to watch that Hasan Minaj (sp?) special and it was dire, gave up after about 15 minutes. same with the second Chappelle (didn't watch the first one, I thought a fried had told me the second was much better but maybe I got that backwards).

new Sarah Silverman is terrific though.

evol j, Wednesday, 21 June 2017 17:26 (six years ago) link

omg that Minaj thing was *awful* - and the audience was going absolutely insane for him, idgi. all the staging with the projections (including what appeared to be actual people's facebook pages!? wtf), the lazy endless set-ups. ugh

agree that Sarah's new one was great. I did notice that she has, at this point, completely abandoned racial material, which is interesting.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 21 June 2017 17:35 (six years ago) link

Rory Scovel one was like a strange hybrid of Steve Martin's more conceptual shit and Louie CK, was great to see something where I really wasn't sure where he was gonna go/couldn't predict how the jokes were going to be structured

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 21 June 2017 17:36 (six years ago) link

Beyond the vile dog crucifixion bit, the new Sarah Silverman special is pretty damn funny. The story about her father at camp had me laughing hard enough to risk passing out.

Anyone seen the new Jen Kirkman?

I kinda want to start a thread about Kumail Nanjiani, Aziz Ansari, and Hasan Minhaj to talk about south asian-American comics and their respective differences/similarities. Kumail's my favorite (I just saw the Big Sick and it was v enjoyable) although they all do different things to varying degrees of success

Aperna Nancherla (sp?) too

evol j, Tuesday, 18 July 2017 16:18 (six years ago) link

I've been checking out The Standups on netflix--some good mixed with some bad.

I'd rank the ones I've seen like this:

Dean Cole-- funny enough to make the "I didn't prepare for this special" schtick work

Fortune Feinstein - Hard not to root for her onstage, some really big laughs and an infectious, positive personality

Nate Bargatze-- more smile-inducing than laugh-out-loud funny--but that made the big laughs hit harder in some ways.

Nikki Glaser - very witty, but in predictable ways. I don't want to compare every lady comic who talks about sex to Amy Schumer, but her sex jokes hit the same sorts of beats.

I'm looking forward to watching the Dan Soder half-hour, haven't heard of Beth Stelling

text text text text (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 18 July 2017 16:28 (six years ago) link

I like that Netflix is jumping into the half-hour space--it's a more flattering format for like 95% of comedians
