first day of kindergarten. unbelievable!

tylerw, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 16:29 (nine years ago) link

Nice! we just had our oldest do his first day last week! Really a strange feeling, I was more heartbroken than I thought I would be. It was this "wave bye to your family" moment where I had to put my phone back in my pocket and put my sunglasses on.

Oh man, how do you cope? Euler (I think) made a comment on the parenting thread about how teeth are the end of babyhood, beginning of personhood and I'm shall we say struggling a little with that.

ps m bison that is one cute kid.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 17:34 (nine years ago) link

It was really surreal, hadn't put much thought into it until that moment tbf. one of those pillars of parenting that everyone gets/has to pass through I guess. Thought about it for days, what it was like for my parents? What big changes are ahead? What level of control are we losing and is it worth it? How will he get along with kids? Will he make good friends? Have I taught him enough? Is he gonna be a punk?

Now I KINDA see why people home teach!

He's having a great time so far and that makes everything easier, tho.

She came home from daycare the other day having been introduced to Power Rangers by one of the other kids. It's probably the first media/art/culture that she has embraced that we did not introduce to her, and that's a weird feeling. But we will support her in her Power Ranger fandom as long as she's interested.

I'm admittedly envious. Francie will join Ivy and I in the recliner on weekend mornings when Jeff has gone running before feeing the cat, and will put up with some baby interaction in the service of maybe, just maybe charming me into getting up and feeding her, but Francie's just not the nose-rubbing kind of cat.

This is the best documentation of their interactions we have, and it about sums it up: excited baby, wary kitty.

You people are physically hurting me with your phenomenally attractive children. There oughtta be a law against it!

And I see Lulu is in an incandescently beautiful stage at the moment, not helping there.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Tuesday, 16 September 2014 03:41 (nine years ago) link

And I know Han isn't doing any particular thing for the camera but all of her features are perfectly rosy and button-like just the way they are. And that HAIR.

Seriously. I think Dan pinned extra hair onto whichever of his magical children that is, because HOW DID THAT BABY GROW SO MUCH HAIR? Weren't they bald as eggs like YESTERDAY?

Not to even address stevie and the alien from some rarefied solar system that even if we discovered it would consider us savages.

carl agatha, they are usually not buds. she is fascinated by charlie parker, mostly because i'm always making her look at him, and rubbing her feet in his fur when he's asleep on my desk. but he has not seemed a fan of her thus far - he doesn't like her crying, and she has supplanted him in my partner's affections (he idolizes my partner) and now he's no longer to sleep in our room, lie on our bed, etc. so there's been tension. but when this pic happened, i'd just taking marin for a long walk in the sling, and we came back to find charlie and my partner snuggled up on the sofa, and now it was marin's time to look jealous. and i leaned in with marin so she could see her mum, and charlie got off her lap and walked over to marin, "kissed" her on the nose and scampered off, like "it's only fair that it's your turn now."

so hopefully a corner has been turned. this morning, as i took marin downstairs to play just before dawn, so her mum could get an hour or so more sleep, we stopped off in my office where charlie was standing and looking out the window. marin leaned in and actually attempted to stroke him, and he sort of went with it, so yay.

charlie's brother, charlie mingus, has some serious ptsd issues going on (they're both rescue cats, parker's a lot more confident though, evenings with mingus involve him jumping on the sofa, snuggling in hard and really enjoying a few strokes, then dashing off in terror), but he's already given her his seal of approval - ie, he head-butted her bottom while sarah was feeding her.

Belt is brown (stevie), Tuesday, 16 September 2014 06:37 (nine years ago) link

[sorry, in case it wasn't clear, charlie parker and charlie mingus are our cats]
