okay, so the reason i missed it was because it is in the complete list of releases on the right, but not categorized on the left. what gives glenn?

The unclustered ones are in orange, so after you go through the clustered ones you can scan the orange ones on the right until they start looking stupid. That's the idea.

(There are many reasons why an artist wouldn't get clustered, including that I suppress clusters that would have only a very small number of artists unless at least one of them is at least vaguely remotely notable (according to our data).)

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 13 August 2014 02:56 (nine years ago) link

glenn, how come older albums show up on the list? for example Majida El Roumi · Ebhath Aanni is from 1994. is it bc it's the first time on spotify, is it mislabeled, or is it a reissue or something?

Mordy, Wednesday, 13 August 2014 03:04 (nine years ago) link

(i should add, it's labeled as a 2014 release on the spotify app itself - only if you google it do you see it's really twenty years old.)

Mordy, Wednesday, 13 August 2014 03:05 (nine years ago) link

that makes sense glenn

Labels routinely tell us their old albums are new, precisely so they'll show up at the top of date-sorted lists. We fix 'em as we find 'em.

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 13 August 2014 15:25 (nine years ago) link

what time does the sorting hat get bumped?

Mordy, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 13:44 (nine years ago) link

it's up!

Wiz Khalifa · Blacc Hollywood
Imogen Heap · Sparks (Deluxe Version)

As of next week this should finally be totally automated on my end. Which is good, because I'll be on vacation. (So if the automation breaks and there's no update at all next week, I apologize in advance...)

Liam Bailey - Definitely Now
Smokey Robinson - Smokey and Friends (on a cursory listen, this is gonna be terrible)
Sly Stone - Yellow Moon and More (collection of Sly's early '60's gospel and pop rarities; more a curiosity than a serious listen but i'm into it)
Chuck Brown - Beautiful Life
William Shatner - Live http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Shatner_Live
Wire - Document and Eyewitness 1979 / 1980
Pallbearer - Foundations of Burden

Everyone's a closet ned. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 19:54 (nine years ago) link

caroline smith is terrible, she was one of those ipod commerical type folkie artists until last year and she did this "oh i'm R&B now and so wiiild man" move, she's kinda big in mpls

ruffalo soldier (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 19:55 (nine years ago) link

Is she ever going to do a second Chalice album or was that a one-off thing?

Everyone's a closet ned. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 19:59 (nine years ago) link

i dunno, they seemed to get a lot buzz at first but then lizzobangers came out and she was scooped up by totally gross national product records and feels like she's just going on to bigger and better things...she was clearly the most talented in that group imo

ruffalo soldier (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 20:01 (nine years ago) link

haha i thought at first you were saying this label called national product records was 'totally gross'

again glenn: thanks for this. Really revolutionizing the way i listen to spotify and find new music for the past few weeks.

otm, and if this thread is any indication so far, it opens up a great way to talk about some new music on ilx (that can be hard to find a good place for otherwise)

Mordy, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 20:56 (nine years ago) link

ok just checked out sorting hat, that's really cool glenn

ruffalo soldier (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 21:06 (nine years ago) link

My preliminary list of things to check out this week: Children of Technology, Pallbearer, The Moon and the Nightspirit, Troye Sivan, Imogen Heap (!), Kate Boy, Twin Atlantic, In Flames, DragonForce, The Copyrights, Empire Auriga, Polarsets, Natasa Djordjevic, Colory, Sebastian Komor, Rumour Cubes, Lussuria, Ryn Weaver, Zella Day, Racing Glaciers, Mochipet, Pure Gold. My data says we're supposed to be getting the new Charli XCX song, but it doesn't appear to be up yet, so it's Youtube for that and the Taylor Swift thing.

Not that I listened to everything from last week yet.

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 03:00 (nine years ago) link

yeah the pile is getting a lot bigger.
Also the lemonade and ciroc gucci song (which i am curious in solely to see if it's a sequel to lemonade and it's not is it) is not up either

I should clarify that I had nothing whatsoever to do with the visual treatment of that hip-hop thing, and until I opened up the magazine myself I totally thought there was going to be a map with various-thickness arrows arching back and forth. I just had the original diaspora idea and generated the data for it.

well if the core message was that east coast and trap has longer legs in terms of how far the listening influence extends over bounce and west coast rap, it conveys that well

Even if you gave us stupid badges, something great would happen on your platform.

lol if you're trying to make yourself seem invaluable, don't use a photo of yourself wearing google glass.

Is there anywhere that lists all new additions to Spotify as they go up? The New Releases and Release Radar are far from comprehensive.

IDK if this is "new" or not but there are a bunch of good Soul Jazz Records comps up now--nowhere close to the full catalogue but enough good stuff that I want to just hole up with my headphones and do nothing for a while.

Particularly enjoying Dancehall and Venezuela 70. Note that not all of them come up under the "artist" name "Soul Jazz Records Presents," you just have to do a search for "soul jazz" and then "see all albums."

Also try this in the search bar:

label:"soul jazz"

Much more than the last time I ran that!

I noticed the History Of Our World: Breakbeat & Jungle mix by DJ DB appeared recently (or has it been on for ages?). Shame it's not some kind of deluxe edition with all tracks also available unmixed but hey.
