People who have kids are losers because they can't travel the world on a whim.

nickn, Friday, 15 August 2014 08:01 (nine years ago) link

some people think world travel is imperative. these same people often struggle to understand why you'd ever work a job that you do not enjoy. they are often pleasant but come the fuck on.

Peeking at Peak Petty (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 15 August 2014 16:22 (nine years ago) link

fuck this ice bucket thing. promoting 'awareness' apparently only constitutes saying "oh btw, this still exists, didja know that" these days. and the charity in question is rather well off to begin with. not poopooing donations but now I have friends that are butthurt over the cries of hashtag activism that are acting in sanctimonious fashion, people I wouldn't usually accuse of that.

I found that weird as I thought access had always been a verb. Apparently it dates from the early '60s. On the plus side, I've just found out that it originally meant 'an attack of fever'. Bet Hobbes still thinks it does.

see I love that strip even though I have absolutely no doubt that watterson is being a conservative ninny, cause "verbing weirds language" is such an elegant encapsulation of and argument for the opposite stance

emil.y, Saturday, 16 August 2014 10:46 (nine years ago) link

I just find it irritating. Changing nouns into verbs has been around in English forever and the legion of denominal verbs produced are so unremarkable most people don't even realize they originated that way. It's like exclaiming about how wacky it is that you can form an adverb from an adjective by adding -ly to the end.

erry red flag (f. hazel), Saturday, 16 August 2014 17:18 (nine years ago) link

so what do y'all think about this ice bucket thing? 80% of my newsfeed is videos of people doing this

lol i came here to mention the ice bucket thing but i wasn't sure if it belonged in this thread. it feels like 2% about the cause in question and 98% celebrity circle jerk of "see we can be wacky too".

LIKE If you are against racism (omar little), Monday, 18 August 2014 22:24 (nine years ago) link

I wouldn't mind it so much if 30% of my news feed didn't involve people posting "people criticizing the ice bucket challenge need to stfu - it's for a good cause" eyeroll posts

heck (silby), Monday, 18 August 2014 22:36 (nine years ago) link

This made me change my mind about it. I was pretty annoyed with it at first, more so when I got "challenged" over the weekend, but reading her take on it has me reconsidering, particularly if the stats about how much money has been raised ends up being true.

Bus Sex Teen Busted After Queef Beef (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 18 August 2014 22:38 (nine years ago) link

Thankfully my whole FB is a) people talking about how much the Ferguson PD sucks b) fashion editors' Insta holiday snaps c) suckage of current UK government and d) zero instances of ice bucket.

struwwelpeter capaldi (suzy), Monday, 18 August 2014 22:49 (nine years ago) link

It did raise a lot of money and I'm fine with that (although some will argue "fundraising cannibalism") but there's too little actual education going on alongside of it. I would argue the same amount of money could have easily been raised with a less awkward campaign - likewise, I do hope there's a plan to revisit the donation solicitation periodically so it's not quickly forgotten. I don't know much about the particular charity in question other than about 26% of their funds go to research.

Yes, I know, it's social media, nobody's asking for a tl;dr screed, but folks seem to conflate 'awareness' with saying 'hey btw this thing still exists'.

Neanderthal, Monday, 18 August 2014 22:52 (nine years ago) link

This is definitely, at least, better than the shitty 'post pics of your bras' or other campaigns that didn't even make any attempt to raise money at all, though.

Neanderthal, Monday, 18 August 2014 22:53 (nine years ago) link

and now my best friend just ice bucket challenged me. grrrrr.....

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 02:18 (nine years ago) link

already donated money so conscience is clean

"I would argue the same amount of money could have easily been raised with a less awkward campaign"

dunno about this. the idea was dumb but it got traction at least. the idea itself is stupid b/c if I understand it correctly, dumping ice water on your head means you didn't want to donate, correct? so essentially you're doing it for nothing, right?

Maggie killed Quagmire (collest baby ever) (frogbs), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 02:34 (nine years ago) link

it was supposed to be "donate $100 or dunk your head in water". Lots of friends I know couldn't donate cos they simply don't have the funds. I just hate the implication that you're supposed to respond to the challenge or you look like a dick. many of my friends have countered by sharing ALS links instead if they couldn't donate.

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 19 August 2014 02:41 (nine years ago) link

are there any nominated celebs who have said 'fuck off, I'm not doing that'? This kind of just a bit of fun/for a good cause feels like a constant presence at my workplace, so depressing to me that you can be as rich an successful as Bill Gates and there is still no escape. Margaret Thatcher otm

In humans, cold shock response is perhaps the most common cause of death from immersion in very cold water,[citation needed] such as by falling through thin ice. The cold water can cause heart attack due to vasoconstriction,[1] the heart has to work harder to pump the same volume of blood throughout the body. For people with heart disease, this additional workload can cause the heart to go into arrest.
