I like this, for a match-3. By the makers of A Dark Room. http://gridland.doublespeakgames.com/

emil.y, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 00:48 (nine years ago) link

Nice! I think the only way they could improve the game would be to license Marvel superheroes.

OH MY GOD HE'S OOGLEEE (Leee), Wednesday, 27 August 2014 01:01 (nine years ago) link

I have no idea what I am doing in this game. Other than matching random 3's.

Jeff, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 02:35 (nine years ago) link

yeah me too

go ahead. make vid where u rap about this new TMNT movie. (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 27 August 2014 04:18 (nine years ago) link

Be judicious in your matches at night.

OH MY GOD HE'S OOGLEEE (Leee), Wednesday, 27 August 2014 04:57 (nine years ago) link

During the day, you're levelling up your resources. The only resource I really understand, though, is corn, which replenishes your health. The others just expand your buildings, I think?

At night, you are trying to balance the sword and shield matches, which provide you with bonuses, and the rest, which provide you with creatures to fight (you have to fight to advance time and level up). There is little point to making quick matches unless you need extra bonuses when you accidentally cause a chain reaction, it's better (if less exciting) to fight things one at a time, in order to survive.

My only problem is that the format makes me feel like there should be some incremental shift in narrative, or a revealed endgame at some point, but from the amount I've played so far it seems like this won't happen.

emil.y, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 13:31 (nine years ago) link

eventually you unlock some gems that during the day let you control time (?) and at night summon a witch (?)

Mordy, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 14:33 (nine years ago) link

Once your buildings get tall enough you can put a star over them, dunno what that does though.

OH MY GOD HE'S OOGLEEE (Leee), Wednesday, 27 August 2014 16:28 (nine years ago) link

IDK, it just pisses me off that there isn't so basic instructions about the game mechanics.

Jeff, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 16:50 (nine years ago) link

The star seems to prioritize the building, so resources go there first. I think.

Clay, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 21:31 (nine years ago) link

i figured out how to summon the dragon but i haven't beaten him yet

Mordy, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 21:33 (nine years ago) link

I got stuck at day 20. Liked it, would like to learn more, but if I have to start over, I don't think I will.

alanbatman (abanana), Friday, 29 August 2014 01:01 (nine years ago) link

Gave it another go.
House 1: food and storage. Built on gaining levels. Also toughens the generic melee enemies, I think.
House 2: increases the amount produced from matching red stones; also toughens the animals.
House 3: increases paper gains; also toughens archers.
House 4: increases metal gains; also enhances the sword (UPGRADE THIS)
House 5: increases wood gains; also enhances the shield (UPGRADE THIS)
House 6: appears when you get enough of the treasures that look like heart pieces.

I figured out some of the House 6 stuff but I won't go into it now. Haven't killed a witch/slenderman yet.

Love Hotel

Not new, but I just gave it a spin. Dirty 8-bit demake of SimTower, but probably a better and more streamlined game than the inspiration. Completes in about 30 min.

Nhex, Saturday, 13 September 2014 22:33 (nine years ago) link

Hoooooooooooooffffff, beat Gridland. Damn. Not gonna do that again.

abanana, Friday, 31 October 2014 14:27 (nine years ago) link

not sure how we missed this

http://www.clickerheroes.com

via http://www.sirlin.net/posts/podcast-sirlin-on-game-design which is worth a listen, if a bit of an echo chamber

you go to hell with clickerheroes
you have destroyed my day

Hint: close the window and it'll keep playing.

abanana, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 07:15 (nine years ago) link

yup, i do appreciate that i can leave it going overnight
but sigh what is the point of these things

Nhex, Tuesday, 4 November 2014 14:29 (nine years ago) link

I will say this, I appreciate that you can actually CLOSE THE TAB and it will grind gold for you while you're gone

Nhex, Thursday, 6 November 2014 14:30 (nine years ago) link

I'm sure it'd be possible to construct something like this in such a way that the whole element of apparent choice is completely illusory, where the answer to any question along the lines of "should I upgrade the current guy or unlock the next guy? How about levelling the previous guy until I can unlock his next upgrade? Do I move onto the next level now or grind the earlier faster stages?" would always be IT DOESN'T EVEN MATTER.

JimD, Thursday, 6 November 2014 15:48 (nine years ago) link

but... isn't that effectively already the case? *thinktimes*

Nhex, Thursday, 6 November 2014 18:57 (nine years ago) link

ha i like jim's idea

there would be complicated skill trees and races and etc, but in the end only clicks per second would matter

but your choices would affect how your avatar looks!

eeeeeevil

yeah i lost a good five hours to clicker heroes before i remembered what cookie clicker did to my brain and pulled myself away. but...i still bookmarked it and go back occasionally to spend my accumulated money.

i'm enjoying this puzzle game transmission, created by the science museum in london. the sound design in particular is really well-done.

good stuff

Nhex, Monday, 10 November 2014 06:15 (nine years ago) link

okay, so i'm kind of embarrassed about this, but clicker heroes.
i'm on the eighth or ninth ascension now and am able to ascend once every two hours BUT now it requires regular supervision to move forward.
it's pretty fucking evil.
