again glenn: thanks for this. Really revolutionizing the way i listen to spotify and find new music for the past few weeks.

otm, and if this thread is any indication so far, it opens up a great way to talk about some new music on ilx (that can be hard to find a good place for otherwise)

ok just checked out sorting hat, that's really cool glenn

ruffalo soldier (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 19 August 2014 21:06 (nine years ago) link

My preliminary list of things to check out this week: Children of Technology, Pallbearer, The Moon and the Nightspirit, Troye Sivan, Imogen Heap (!), Kate Boy, Twin Atlantic, In Flames, DragonForce, The Copyrights, Empire Auriga, Polarsets, Natasa Djordjevic, Colory, Sebastian Komor, Rumour Cubes, Lussuria, Ryn Weaver, Zella Day, Racing Glaciers, Mochipet, Pure Gold. My data says we're supposed to be getting the new Charli XCX song, but it doesn't appear to be up yet, so it's Youtube for that and the Taylor Swift thing.

Not that I listened to everything from last week yet.

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 03:00 (nine years ago) link

yeah the pile is getting a lot bigger.
Also the lemonade and ciroc gucci song (which i am curious in solely to see if it's a sequel to lemonade and it's not is it) is not up either

as long as we're making this the g.mcd. cheering thread, here's a somewhat older piece from Wired:

Fun, but that graph is nigh unreadable.

dem bow dem bow need calcium (seandalai), Wednesday, 20 August 2014 16:35 (nine years ago) link

I should clarify that I had nothing whatsoever to do with the visual treatment of that hip-hop thing, and until I opened up the magazine myself I totally thought there was going to be a map with various-thickness arrows arching back and forth. I just had the original diaspora idea and generated the data for it.

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 18:51 (nine years ago) link

well if the core message was that east coast and trap has longer legs in terms of how far the listening influence extends over bounce and west coast rap, it conveys that well

Trentmoller - Lost Reworks
Hyuna - A Talk
Sinkane - Mean Love
Jute Gyte - Ressentiment
Lee Scratch Perry and Iguana - Vibes
Bjork - Vespertine Live
Homeboy Sandman - Hallways
Arthur Collins - The King of the Ragtime Singer (amazing music but some of it is nearly obscenely offensive)

New singles from Prince (and it's very good!), Tim McGraw, Jason Aldean, Jhene Aiko, Tensnake, Hercules and Love Affair, Theophilus London and Jesse Boykins III, Busdriver, Mac Lethal ("Incredible Mozart Rap" lolz 4eva), I Octane, Hawkwind, I LOVE MAKONNEN

Also a bunch of re-released jazz compilations from Django, Lester Young, Art Tatum, Hank Mobley, Sidney Bichet, Peggy Lee, Errol Garner, Mel Torme, Ella Fitzgerald...

I was kinda hoping this would be a thread of recommendations. Glenn, should I be listening to Haerts? Defend YOSELF

I'll say, at least, that the Game Theory reissue (Blaze of Glory), which is the beginning of a full GT reissue campaign by Omnivore, is a tiny wonder from the world of nerdy just-post-punk Californian power-pop, and if you like that sort of thing and don't already know Game Theory, your Spotify subscription is about to pay for itself.

The only other two I've had time to absorb are Solstafir (Icelandic black/progressive metal band sounding increasingly self-assured and ambitious) and Malrun (Danish melodic rock/metal band stomping around in enthusiastic and borderline glam-rocky fashion).

Oh, and the great pop-rock single "Running to You" by a Latvian teenager named Katrine Lukins.

Oh, and I'm now liking the slightly shoegazey indie-rock crunch of Basement on this 3-song EP Further Sky.

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 19:20 (nine years ago) link

And if you don't know Rothko, and think the sound of ambient/post-rock humming with multiple bass players sounds intriguing, their compilation "A Life Lived Elsewhere" is just up, and a pretty decent intro to the band.

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 3 September 2014 19:21 (nine years ago) link

will check these out, thanks!
