HEADPHONE BEEF

lag∞n, Friday, 29 August 2014 22:48 (nine years ago) link

Investigating, Marco apparently inadvertently started something with The Wirecutter people by making a now-edited post calling their process into question, which I think eventually escalated to Marco basically calling them plebs, the Wirecutter people calling him an amateur and then an asshole, and Brian Lam being accused of "race-baiting" by randoms.

lol

joe "scratch" perry (diamonddave85), Friday, 29 August 2014 23:08 (nine years ago) link

he wrote a mea culpa saying he had been an asshole but kinda blaming it on social media and saying he was gonna try to log off more and smell the flowers and when i searched twitter to try to figure out the genesis of the beef i found millions of tweets complimenting him on his profundity

a lot of these guys are really bad writers

like this guy has stopped being a developer to become a writer?!

http://mattgemmell.com/confessions-of-an-ex-developer/

if he were american he'd probably be the kind of guy who'd have a copy of strunk and white on this desk (via gruber). but in spite of (because of) that, i feel like i'm having a stroke when i try to parse his writing.

My answer is always the same: not really. The actual truth of the matter, as ever, is more nuanced.

MATT GEMMELL IS CREATING
WORDS WITH MEANING

oh man he's creating his own words now, how artisanal

mh, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 14:14 (nine years ago) link

I find myself fashioning sentences, and occasionally paragraphs with some meaning, but would never go so far as to create words.

mh, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 14:17 (nine years ago) link

creating words is groapcian exercise imho

His entire "ownership" of what is basically a rough text formatting convention and one perl script has been the pissiest show of fake power for years. iirc people tried to submit a few bug fixes to his perl script and he refused to even update that, let alone do anything markdown-related other than say he was the creator (lol) for a decade.

The fact he's trying to claim ownership or exclusivity over the ability to make _underscores_ turn into italics or w/e is so.... nothing.

mh, Thursday, 4 September 2014 16:43 (nine years ago) link

its kinda like how he writes all day abt usability and his site is not mobile ready

Yeah but you just know this is also some bullshit principle. iOS Safari is such a magical experience that you don't even need the baby web. See also: apple.com

lag∞n, Thursday, 4 September 2014 17:03 (nine years ago) link

Yeah the official Markdown is a Perl script implemented with regexes and tons of undefined edge cases, so thanks for the idea Grubes but the Pandoc guy is the true Markdown king now.

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Thursday, 4 September 2014 17:13 (nine years ago) link

also no thanks for the idea. fuck markup. the mac did this better in 1984. ⌘-B >>>>>> "* *"

Marco Arment @marcoarment

Whether Gruber filed a trademark with the USPTO or not has no relevance on whether it’s a dick move to commandeer the name.

lag∞n, Friday, 5 September 2014 00:10 (nine years ago) link

it is a commendable dick move imo

⌘-B (mh), Friday, 5 September 2014 00:21 (nine years ago) link

John Gruber was also very upset, and I think rightfully so, that the word Markdown was not capitalized throughout the spec.

socki (s1ocki), Friday, 5 September 2014 13:28 (nine years ago) link

Atwood is a schmuck too. I love that the specification doesn't include a grammar. WTF? You're making the exact same mistake.
