I have an Appletv and it is rly easy to do stuff. But I have a tv, so I am most definitely not a youth

Apple's deal so far is breaking sports and shit. MLB streaming via apple is cool, but not for me.

⌘-B (mh), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:13 (nine years ago) link

AirPlay to AppleTV is awesome and worth the price alone

stet, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:13 (nine years ago) link

yeah the thing that cld force cable companies to the table is if the youths really just never get tvs

lag∞n, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:14 (nine years ago) link

I mean properties we'd expect from "the real" Apple TV: app store, SDK, a vidgam controller, Amazon and whatnot able to put their apps on there like on iPad…I guess Apple wants to build something that the proverbial (but not all that common) cord-cutter would be able to use to watch not just lots of things but for the right price closer to anything, time shifted/iClouded etc.

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:15 (nine years ago) link

I have a TV but I've never signed up for cable TV and I probably never will, a new building I'm eyeing to move to doesn't say anything about cable but advertises "HD antenna on the roof"

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:16 (nine years ago) link

also am a youth

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:16 (nine years ago) link

only thing cable really has is exclusives. if I can get USA/TBS/AMC or w/e via Hulu or buying seasons, all they have is sports, which are evaporating, and the HBO/Showtime lock-in deals where you can only stream w/cable sub

I have talked to a lot of people leeching off of the HBO Go subs of others

⌘-B (mh), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:17 (nine years ago) link

a big iPad you use on the TV with a game controller or 5-way buttons isn't rly enough to make a splashy new thing for so I guess it probably boils down to the rumored content dealmaking or something Magical and Revolutionary

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:18 (nine years ago) link

sports are p much alls i watch on tv, anything else if i care enough ill just pirate or netflix or w/e

lag∞n, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:19 (nine years ago) link

If they came out with a box that just had the entire back catalog of Antiques Roadshow on it I'd probably buy it

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:21 (nine years ago) link

you don't pirate sports lagún?

fedora, wherever it may find her (darraghmac), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:28 (nine years ago) link

i certainly have but the quality sucks, hd sports on a big screen is so good m8

lag∞n, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:30 (nine years ago) link

Sports TV deals are so fn complicated

, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:37 (nine years ago) link

quality on eg sopcast or acestream or similar can be excellent but yeah its a hunt every time.

fedora, wherever it may find her (darraghmac), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:41 (nine years ago) link

lag∞n, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:45 (nine years ago) link

oh man, my friend tried a non-retina tablet and it didn't suit needs. primary user is his three year old. I coached him on the angry birds last week. Works better if you shoot the birds toward the blocks.

⌘-B (mh), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:45 (nine years ago) link

like it was a huge upgrade on what we had and like idk we still had the receipt last Saturday if I had been told I feel poorly guided here

fedora, wherever it may find her (darraghmac), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:46 (nine years ago) link

I was set to say something but given the voiced needs of the primary user I held my tongue

, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:48 (nine years ago) link

yeah nobody believes me that she's a terror

fedora, wherever it may find her (darraghmac), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:53 (nine years ago) link

i'm in the market for a macbook and am not considering retina at all, my eyes are powerful and unstoppable.

wish there was a cable package that was just sports channels + nba league pass. I resent tv so much. Get rid of commercials while we're at it.

as a new imac owner, cosine the fuck outta this. just wish it was a little less laggy for steam/emu

the other song about butts in the top 5 (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 07:08 (nine years ago) link

Ha. I'm 6'0" and playing with the 6+ cutout I clearly have tiny thumbs for my height based on that diagram. Cradling it in the same place I'm apparently only 5'9". Is it possible American men have bigger thumbs? I imagine American men having bigger thumbs.

Alba, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 12:25 (nine years ago) link

think thats for the 6

lag∞n, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 13:44 (nine years ago) link

Ah, whoops. Tiny thumb insecurity averted.

Alba, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 15:42 (nine years ago) link

feel like phones being so huge is gonna cannibalize tablet sales, also feel like tablets were never that good or useful to begin with and will likely recede into a smaller market

― lag∞n, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 02:03 (13 hours ago) Permalink

Yeah literally the only thing I use our iPad for is to keep my toddler quiet while I go get showered and shaved in the morning. My wife does use it for most of her school work though - sort of as a combo laptop/e-reader.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 15:51 (nine years ago) link

sounds p useful to me

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 15:53 (nine years ago) link

Yeah I can see its use for students. I don't carry a bag so I don't tend to read on it -- I read on my phone instead, which is too small for that, which is why I'm psyched for the bigger phones.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 15:56 (nine years ago) link

I use mine all the time at work. Email/notes/reading documents.

Jeff, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 16:00 (nine years ago) link

i never use mine, tho i did for a while

lag∞n, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 16:05 (nine years ago) link

I use my mini all the time at home, but that's because ~I don't have a cellphone~.

pplains, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 16:11 (nine years ago) link

I read comics and cookbooks on my Mini.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 16:47 (nine years ago) link

Didn't use my mini much, but use my Air constantly. It's that which pushes me in the direction of the 6+

stet, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 16:55 (nine years ago) link

I use my mini way more than I ever used my ipad 2. lightness is the key, can hold it one handed easily which is crucial. been reading a lot on it (retina helps for that, iBooks is gorgeous)

droit au butt (Euler), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 17:57 (nine years ago) link

I would prob use a mini more than my iPad 2 and def more than a big ol phablet

gbx, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 18:01 (nine years ago) link

but comic books

ugh (lukas), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 18:06 (nine years ago) link

yeah the main thing drawing me to a 6+ is being able to read kindle/ibooks without my iPad. can't really stand to do it on current iPhone.

ryan, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 19:16 (nine years ago) link

as Apple calls their tablet a Pad I have decided that instead of a phablet, the bigphone is called a phad

⌘-B (mh), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 20:16 (nine years ago) link

http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/PADD

my friend, Gater (Clay), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 20:27 (nine years ago) link

pad is for longer-than-six-minute gaming, comics, on-the-go writing, magazine/newspaper reading, in-bed netflix/tivo/hulu/mubi, insomnia
phone is for email check, pocket, brief gaming and occasional gaming addiction, reference material, texting, calling, photos, spotify playlists, insomnia
desktop is for work, ilx, emulation, music, writing, steam, battlenet, insomnia

the other song about butts in the top 5 (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 18 September 2014 05:03 (nine years ago) link

which is for masturbating tbh

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Thursday, 18 September 2014 05:07 (nine years ago) link

dude i already said the desktop was for ilx

iPad is also a good iOS business tool in offices. It's cool with everyone just showing up to a team meeting with iPads and taking turns doing AirPlay to an Apple TV to show designs, slide decks, what not.

I find people staring down at their phones in a business setting to be unspeakably rude whereas sitting there in a meeting reading email on your laptop or iPad somehow doesn't seem rude. Also, iPhones seem less commonly provisioned by employers, whereas I can see iPads being a go-to iOS device to give your staff if you really need them to have something.

I have an iPad 2 which is still going strong three years on. I use it practically every day as a couch device and I bought my wife an iPad Mini w/retina recently as well. In a relationship context, staring at your phone while on sitting on the couch with your partner is rude, so iPad still wins here. Sitting on the couch with a laptop would also seem rude in a slightly different way ("oh, are you still working?" my wife would ask). I use the iPad for web browsing, recipes, Feedly, games, sometimes streaming video from my MacBook Air in the other room. I transition from living room to kitchen, and often read a bit in bed.

When I am at home the phone sits on my desk and I check it only a couple of times after coming home from work and almost never after 9 or 10 pm.

fields of salmon, Thursday, 18 September 2014 08:26 (nine years ago) link

ya im not saying the ipad is dead def still has a ton of business and decorum conscious internet addict use cases but these big phones + people not reuping as often as phones + people not reuping at all are gonna take the glow off of a device that had the most crazy explosive growth of any new product category ever
