and it made me super nostalgic

I used to understand the way window management (and the Finder) worked in OS X. Now I'm just a cranky old man flailing around, surrounded by mess.

I have expose turned off on my parent's iMac and it is a huge pain managing windows within an app

, Tuesday, 23 September 2014 00:41 (nine years ago) link

Why turn it off instead of just giving it an obscure hotkey

xp in my experience, parents are terrified of hitting any keys

I love spaces, always use command-tab and command-~ instead of expose, use the finder maybe 30% of the time and iterm the other 70%, and have lots of bash alias for opening applications and making 'rm' put stuff in the Trash and dealing with finder windows, and I never use Spotlight

I don't know if it's stockholm syndrome or just time but I'm totally fine with OSX and have no fond memories of system 7/8/9. I do remember always turning off the "open every folder in new window" as soon as sat down though so maybe I'm just a heathen.

i think i use the terminal when i'm in "terminal mode" i.e. programming and then i pretend i'm on a unix box. when i'm in "enduser mode" i never touch the thing.

spaces finally works about as good as old virtual screens for unix did 20 years ago. i have different apps pinned to different spaces, and just three-finger swipe left and right between the screens constantly, only cmd-tabing or going to expose when i get really lost. never found a tiling wm for mac that suited me, plus in 'end-user' mode again i'm fond of scattering little notepad documents with fragmentary notes and browsers with snippets of info all over my screen haphazardly.

the only terrible things apple did to me were a) swap the scroll direction and b) add that stupid useless right-hand notifications thing. outside of that, finder is about as usable as ever.

fwiw I'm also finding the current version of iOS Chrome is really nice for browsing on the 6.

What's the connection between landmark forum and apple?

I don't think that Apple forces their employees into that stuff or anything, but I know that a lot of people over there have gotten into it, and the corporate culture reflects a lot of that est-y attitude. If you visit LF, they mention Apple at the top of every list of corporate clients...

lol tho http://www.macrumors.com/2014/09/23/iphone-6-plus-bending-pockets

lag∞n, Tuesday, 23 September 2014 15:56 (nine years ago) link

To prevent bending, iPhone 6 Plus owners may want to remove their iPhones from their pockets before sitting or bending. If a pocket is unavoidable, then customers may want to place their device in a roomier pocket that allows the device to slide out the way. A rigid case may also provide protection from flexing or bending, as well damage from dropping the device.

jesus i would hella ruin one of these then, there is often a great amount of torsion applied to my iphone 5 in my front pocket when I sit

von Daniken Donuts (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 16:14 (nine years ago) link

stealth field testing for the tolerances necessary to build the FlexiPhone

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 16:15 (nine years ago) link

I'm going to go ahead and say it now, possibly breaking the streak, but this is the longest I've heard a nation go on about fitting six inches into their pocket without snickering.

pplains, Tuesday, 23 September 2014 16:16 (nine years ago) link

the giantphone is for people who carry a bag or have cargo pockets or something. if there's torsion on an iphone 5, then this fucker would not even fit in that pocket

⌘-B (mh), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 16:16 (nine years ago) link

if it cant fit in a pocket then maybe its not a phone?

this could be my chance to rock a corny holster

von Daniken Donuts (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 16:19 (nine years ago) link

it was funny, two weeks ago (pre iPhone 6 announcement) I was out around town and saw three people with phablet-style phones. two were women with purses, and the third was a dude with cargo pants.

⌘-B (mh), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 16:20 (nine years ago) link

so I guess if you are a person who has a way to carry larger stuff as part of your lifestyle, it fits in. if not, you probably carry some sort of bag/satchel/backpack/briefcase when you need to carry more and you can just get an iPad mini or w/e

⌘-B (mh), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 16:22 (nine years ago) link

Who the fuck sits down with the phone in your pocket, that's what the table is for

i blow goat farts, aka garts for a living (waterface), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 16:23 (nine years ago) link

i am 5'5" and skinny so I look really stupid in cargo pants. OTOH I am already almost never without my murse.

xpost OTM the meaningful thud of phone on tabletop like a judge's gavel. "Let's do this".

von Daniken Donuts (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 16:24 (nine years ago) link

Am I alone with this? My iPhone 6 has issues dropping from the 4G network every time I wander out of a WiFi network. I'll have to dip it in and out of airplane mode to force it to reconnect to data.

My 5 does that

💪😈⚠️ (DJP), Tuesday, 23 September 2014 16:28 (nine years ago) link

i don't just sit down with the phone in my pocket, i bike with the phone in my pocket. kinda non-negotiable, i don't want to carry a bag 100% of the time.
