Did that charging port fix over the weekend. Now my 5 is back working perfectly.

I get a little rush of power when I pull my phone out of my pocket and nail the home button touch with the first grab so it just glides into operation with one smooth motion.

anyone have any experience selling used apple projects? there look to be lots of websites that deal in buying used mac hardware but i'm not sure if there's any way to determine which ones are scams and which are legitimate. i have a 2-3 y/o imac that's in very good working order which i bought to do some stopgap ios / web development work during a period of job-seeking. now that i have work (in an unrelated field) i find i do not use this machine and would like to divest.

any suggestions?

finally got my actual hands around a 6 plus yesterday and it is just comically awkwardly big

Ass Tchotchke! (jjjusten), Monday, 29 September 2014 17:11 (nine years ago) link

yeah a lot of reviews say it's more awkward to use than the similarly sized Samsung bc the bezel is so large. Seems only any good if you're not really going to use bluetooth at all times for calls, carry a bag, and only use it tablet-style with two hands.

lot of people speculating 6+ is intended to be paired w iwatch, yay consumerism

lag∞n, Monday, 29 September 2014 17:31 (nine years ago) link

6+ is intended to be a big ass phone, well-established that there's a market for big ass phones. 6+ is a Veblen good, which people have accused every Apple product of being anyway for decades. If you want more status with your phone get a 6+ in gold.

I've sold on eBay before

craigslist seems good but it's a pretty big pain for you and the buyer, tons of scams to wade through, lowballs, etc. but it's fee free

eBay is a bit better and more flexible but be prepared to pay at least ~15% in fees (you can ask for buyer to pay shipping)

For an iMac I think craigslist is probably best bet as shipping would be a huge hassle I think unless you have the original box and packaging etc.

best application for big phones imo is as a primary/only device which is not really apples market since apple users are rich, but i cld see it becoming more normal for even rich people to have just the phone

lag∞n, Monday, 29 September 2014 17:54 (nine years ago) link

course need for a bag to keep it is a huge limiting factor, mostly for teh ladies

I use my iPhone so little as a *phone* that the plus seems nice because it's like an ultra portable tablet. Still wary of carrying it around all the time.

feel like when my contract is up might just switch to the cheaper pay as u go plan and keep my 5, not cause i h8 the 6 just cause im feeling disgusted at materialism

I tried that paper cut out of the 6+ in my hand - not as bad as I thought. I can see a problem using apps that require you to tap the corners often, but most don't

ugh (lukas), Monday, 29 September 2014 18:20 (nine years ago) link

i think part of my problem was that its huge and also thin, so it just feels really odd to hold

Ass Tchotchke! (jjjusten), Monday, 29 September 2014 18:21 (nine years ago) link

i get most notications on the lock screen anyway
but yeah... we'll see. once it finally comes in i'll have 14 days to stick with it or switch to the regular 6

i wrote a post saying "the problem isnt the length so much as the width" and hovered over the submit button for about 15 seconds before deleting it. and now i have caved and done it anyway.

ryan, Monday, 29 September 2014 20:18 (nine years ago) link

I actually like the width of the 6 but wish it wasn't so tall. I'd prefer the squarer 4/4S proportions with the larger screens - as it is, the top of the 6 is out of reach if you hold your hand so your thumb can reach the home button, and the 6+ is of course even worse. Also, why are the bezels around Apple's screen thicker than competitors'? The TouchID needs some space, but the sides and top could have been more svelte.

There's nothing wrong with pointing out that girth is really the more important factor imo.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 29 September 2014 20:39 (nine years ago) link

Lee626 have you been using the "reachability" function at all? I find that most times it's the top of the screen is not enough of a stretch to justify it, but occasionally if my hand is in the right position it's a nice way to reach an app.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 29 September 2014 20:40 (nine years ago) link

I don't have my 6 yet, so no. But on the 6+, hitting the home button to engage Reachability may itself be unreachable when you need it, and it seems some types of clickable notifications still appear at the top of the screen even with reachability turned on.

and in his absence, she (Lee626), Monday, 29 September 2014 20:48 (nine years ago) link

hey is this where i can complain that it's not longer viable to own a 16 GB iphone, since iOS 8 is demanding i have over 25% of my total storage free before i can install it?

lag∞n, Monday, 29 September 2014 21:58 (nine years ago) link

xxp i think that's only for the over-the-air update, i believe if you install thru itunes it will use less space
