I use my iPhone so little as a *phone* that the plus seems nice because it's like an ultra portable tablet. Still wary of carrying it around all the time.

feel like when my contract is up might just switch to the cheaper pay as u go plan and keep my 5, not cause i h8 the 6 just cause im feeling disgusted at materialism

lag∞n, Monday, 29 September 2014 18:18 (nine years ago) link

I tried that paper cut out of the 6+ in my hand - not as bad as I thought. I can see a problem using apps that require you to tap the corners often, but most don't

back button?

swipe from top to get notifications?

ugh (lukas), Monday, 29 September 2014 18:20 (nine years ago) link

i think part of my problem was that its huge and also thin, so it just feels really odd to hold

Ass Tchotchke! (jjjusten), Monday, 29 September 2014 18:21 (nine years ago) link

i get most notications on the lock screen anyway
but yeah... we'll see. once it finally comes in i'll have 14 days to stick with it or switch to the regular 6

All the dudes in here talking about ability to use phones one-handed: I see you. I know what you're up to. I don't approve of it.

Immediate Follower (NA), Monday, 29 September 2014 19:38 (nine years ago) link

Texting while driving is pernicious behavior I agree

how are they gonna integrate the watch into "one-handed phoning"

droit au butt (Euler), Monday, 29 September 2014 19:50 (nine years ago) link

The watch is gonna have an extra powerful vibrator

i wrote a post saying "the problem isnt the length so much as the width" and hovered over the submit button for about 15 seconds before deleting it. and now i have caved and done it anyway.

ryan, Monday, 29 September 2014 20:18 (nine years ago) link

I actually like the width of the 6 but wish it wasn't so tall. I'd prefer the squarer 4/4S proportions with the larger screens - as it is, the top of the 6 is out of reach if you hold your hand so your thumb can reach the home button, and the 6+ is of course even worse. Also, why are the bezels around Apple's screen thicker than competitors'? The TouchID needs some space, but the sides and top could have been more svelte.

There's nothing wrong with pointing out that girth is really the more important factor imo.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 29 September 2014 20:39 (nine years ago) link

Lee626 have you been using the "reachability" function at all? I find that most times it's the top of the screen is not enough of a stretch to justify it, but occasionally if my hand is in the right position it's a nice way to reach an app.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Monday, 29 September 2014 20:40 (nine years ago) link

I don't have my 6 yet, so no. But on the 6+, hitting the home button to engage Reachability may itself be unreachable when you need it, and it seems some types of clickable notifications still appear at the top of the screen even with reachability turned on.

hey is this where i can complain that it's not longer viable to own a 16 GB iphone, since iOS 8 is demanding i have over 25% of my total storage free before i can install it?

outrageous thats still the base model

lag∞n, Monday, 29 September 2014 21:58 (nine years ago) link

xxp i think that's only for the over-the-air update, i believe if you install thru itunes it will use less space

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Monday, 29 September 2014 22:08 (nine years ago) link

yeah just wait til you're home dawg

that said i have a 12GB iphone and i installed iOS 8 over the air np

wtf i haven't plugged my phone into itunes in years

call all destroyer, Monday, 29 September 2014 23:01 (nine years ago) link

can you do it... for ten minutes to install software?

⌘-B (mh), Monday, 29 September 2014 23:07 (nine years ago) link

I already updated to iOS 8 over the air. Is the OS still taking up more space than it would had I upgraded via iTunes, and if so is there a way to rectify this?

and in his absence, she (Lee626), Monday, 29 September 2014 23:10 (nine years ago) link

I mean, really, the alternatives to having a large download before OS upgrade are:
1. Somehow have a patch file for changes between versions. Since a major OS upgrade updates all libraries, it'd be nearly the same size, and take foreeeeeever to run
2. Split the patch into multiple install pieces, each of which have a larger chance of failure than the large patch, and it'd make development time exponentially larger
3. Have some sort of phone upgrade kiosk that just does that (which is basically what plugging your phone into the computer for ten minutes does)
4. Have an installer package that is really small, then have it install/download at the same time. Depending on connection speed, it'd either take forever, be really likely to fuck up your phone, or both

Lee, no, it deletes the installer after installation

⌘-B (mh), Monday, 29 September 2014 23:12 (nine years ago) link

max and a few others basically made me realize I was less of a man for buying less than 64GB last time so I have the 128GB phone and I care not at all now

⌘-B (mh), Monday, 29 September 2014 23:13 (nine years ago) link

thx

and in his absence, she (Lee626), Monday, 29 September 2014 23:16 (nine years ago) link

It's a disgrace. The update to ios 8 itself is 1.1 gb, yet it wants me to free 5.6 gb to be able to install it on my ipad. Fuck you apple. Fuck. You.

The compressed file is 1.1GB
You gotta decompress that fucker, what are you doing, running Stacker on your phone? No way

⌘-B (mh), Monday, 29 September 2014 23:26 (nine years ago) link

lol Stacker

fwiw while I generally like his design I really hate the look of the color gradients in the app icons (although now that I think about it it's a clever way to distinguish Apple brand apps from other apps)

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 1 October 2014 18:38 (nine years ago) link

idk i like the ios 7 style

Black-and-white option in prefs is pretty pimp.

schwantz, Wednesday, 1 October 2014 18:51 (nine years ago) link

did not even know that existed

markers, Wednesday, 1 October 2014 19:06 (nine years ago) link

Apropos of nothing, I am really into the honeycomb app picker on the watch. I find myself relying mostly on spatial memory when opening apps on my phone, more so than any visual input from the icons. The hex grid means that scrolling from one app to another is just a journey across a plane, without the more abstract folder and page concepts adding friction. To get from Fitness to Music I just have to go from here to here.

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Wednesday, 1 October 2014 19:08 (nine years ago) link

older guy i work with was complaining about the look of the latest ios a few months ago. turns out he had "invert colors" turned on in accessibility settings. i didn't know that existed until then. trippy.
