I don't know how many people actually listened to quaristice era eps (I myself only got to them a couple of years after they were released), but I think they are actually better than the album. The reworked versions of the quaristice tracks give them a lot more depth and intensity.

there was probably some sort of via media to be found between the fragments of quaristice and the freeform nature of the eps

autechre post 2008 seem to be less about formally integrated releases than file dumps of material that you can sift through

of course it's easier to be formally perfect in a smaller space. less room = less room for error.

even if i find, say altichyre to be the most emotionally moving harmonic progression in their catalogue, given the choice i'd still pick a piece that had more ideas. but this is only a matter of opinion, no more or less than pink flag v prog rock.

Yeah I can imagine a future collection being released on USB stick - possibly with updates sent via the web, like a piece of software.

pink flag isn't my preference but if nakh had said 'send' i'd possibly agree w/o qualification (aside from claiming that vdgg weren't rly prog qua prog, haha)

theres an inverse relation between concision and the sort of dialectical.....complexity....that extended durations can achieve, there is no 90 second grosse fuge, but the notion that 'slightness' is inimical to or incompatible with greatness is fatuous

Gantz Graf is overrated.

It's true that with a band like Boards of Canada, the shorter tracks are as important as the longer tracks, but I don't think this is necessarily true in Ae's case.

The best thing on GG is itself pretty maximal, tbf ;) & one of the reasons for its greatness is that every idea it has is straight fucking inspired. the rest is clinical execution, synthesis, hyperliteracy

xp ^^ - they're not known for them, so using up a precious vote on an ornamental piece of fluff, no matter how lovely, might seem like a waste. I entirely understand the logic.

GG itself packs an incredible number of ideas into 4 minutes. Length-based arguments of concision fail. It's about synthesis of ideas

You do know they made it by attaching a contact mic to a mortar and pestle and just spent 4+ mins grinding up mustard seeds, don't you?

Gantz Graf works brilliantly as a piece of audiovisual art and I find listening to it without the video a bit like steak without chips.

afaik only confield made use of their generative patches in max/msp, still, they're the ones that built the patches, and were directing their behaviour with parameters.
i don't see why that means complexity needs scare quotes, both the process and the results are more complex than the earlier work

i see quotes but not care quotes. regardless, complexity is something i rarely seek out in music although i'm reasonably open to it.

in it for the narrative and the synthesis. something complex and well-realised will always impress me. something simple and well-realised will do likewise. something that is both simple and complex and also well-realised maybe best of all ;)
