dog latin you have never entirely understood anything and this is why i like you

Gantz Graf works brilliantly as a piece of audiovisual art and I find listening to it without the video a bit like steak without chips.

^^ Agree strongly with this. Never quite enjoy it when it's just the audio. CapIV on the other hand ...

i'm not sure it's fair to say later autechre is more complex than earlier autechre

isn't a lot of the "complexity" of later autechre just semi-automated dsp doing its own thing?

afaik only confield made use of their generative patches in max/msp, still, they're the ones that built the patches, and were directing their behaviour with parameters.
i don't see why that means complexity needs scare quotes, both the process and the results are more complex than the earlier work

cheeseburger, Thursday, 2 October 2014 17:55 (nine years ago) link

i see quotes but not care quotes. regardless, complexity is something i rarely seek out in music although i'm reasonably open to it.

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Thursday, 2 October 2014 18:01 (nine years ago) link

scare

Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Thursday, 2 October 2014 18:01 (nine years ago) link

"complexity" in "scare quotes" because i don't believe in a hierarchy of musical complexity

the late great, Thursday, 2 October 2014 18:05 (nine years ago) link

nobody here is arguing that more complex music is better, chill out

ugh (lukas), Thursday, 2 October 2014 18:08 (nine years ago) link

i think some people are!

the late great, Thursday, 2 October 2014 18:09 (nine years ago) link

in it for the narrative and the synthesis. something complex and well-realised will always impress me. something simple and well-realised will do likewise. something that is both simple and complex and also well-realised maybe best of all ;)

Ƹ༑Ʒ (imago), Thursday, 2 October 2014 18:13 (nine years ago) link

Acroyear2 and 777 are the tracks I tend to skip on LP5

Shepard Toney Album (dog latin), Thursday, 2 October 2014 18:13 (nine years ago) link

Lol at "care" quotes

Shepard Toney Album (dog latin), Thursday, 2 October 2014 18:14 (nine years ago) link

the caveat is that sophistication, synthesis and the multivalent narrative imo suits this band

i thought it would be top 5.

Find myself whistling the needling melody of acroyear2 quite often.

Would gamble on rae and arch carrier making the top ten.

yeah i could have voted for fold4, the elastic tempo, the chiming synths, the pointillist percussion which identifies all of the lp5 tracks

C21H23NO5 (nakhchivan), Thursday, 2 October 2014 19:02 (nine years ago) link

always thought the bpm version of shepard tone thing in fold4,wrap5 is too much of a conceit/"trick".

mattresslessness, Thursday, 2 October 2014 19:03 (nine years ago) link

wow nakh u are good at play by play

mattresslessness, Thursday, 2 October 2014 19:04 (nine years ago) link

arch carrier for sure although i think i cut that one

just a very consistent lp

a solid 9.5 from any sort of pitchfork boys who would review it if it happened to be reissued today, even if ryan only gave it a sick, but not quite epic 8.4 back in the day

just trying to incorporate the influence of ryan schreiber and brent discrescenzo into all of my i love music posts from now on matt -- expect more crisp summaries of autechre tracks in the hours to come

Ƹ༑Ʒ (imago), Thursday, 2 October 2014 20:03 (nine years ago) link

first one on this poll i hadn't heard that would have made my ballot, and quite easily too :)

Ƹ༑Ʒ (imago), Thursday, 2 October 2014 20:06 (nine years ago) link

"444" is my #1, probably as much a matter of sentiment than anything. I honestly couldn't say that it's an ambient techno track that the early IDM class couldn't have come up with (Global Comm, B12, Balil-style Black Dog/Plaid, RDJ if he felt like slumming), but it tunnels straight into my reticular activating system, the closest thing to a guilty pleasure here. As dated as it may sound (although it's the freshest track on Incunabula), it's still sumptuous with the main melody plus the different layers floating in and out, and it's one vocal sample away from being Autechre's "Halcyon." Maybe the one aspect of this that points to their aesthetic-to-come is the little synth-squeal right at the end, like the air being let out of a balloon.

xp Curse you, LJ!!!!!

cichleee suite (Leee), Thursday, 2 October 2014 20:06 (nine years ago) link

o sorry :( gr8 writeup, will listen to 444 next

Ƹ༑Ʒ (imago), Thursday, 2 October 2014 20:07 (nine years ago) link

Oh wait you're talking about "Maphive," nm.

cichleee suite (Leee), Thursday, 2 October 2014 20:08 (nine years ago) link

this is why all of these claims about when autechre got good, or worse, 'became' themselves are invalid, because there are signs of greatness even in their very earliest work, even before '444' which i love

C21H23NO5 (nakhchivan), Thursday, 2 October 2014 20:11 (nine years ago) link

444 is the best Ae track prior to Tri Repetae and the only pre-1995 track to make my ballot. It has this transcendent quality that is simply epic. One of these years I'd love to drop this in a DJ set and just see how people would react.

octobeard, Thursday, 2 October 2014 20:11 (nine years ago) link

They would get up and dance! Unfortunately, no waltzing.

cichleee suite (Leee), Thursday, 2 October 2014 20:18 (nine years ago) link

this is v cool and more instantly arresting than anything on amber, imo

Ƹ༑Ʒ (imago), Thursday, 2 October 2014 20:19 (nine years ago) link

this is v cool and more instantly arresting than anything on amber, imo

I wonder if we can historicize that -- Amber being the stereotypically dark album coming after the Criminal Justice Act, whereas Incunabula collects their material from the halcyon(!) days.

cichleee suite (Leee), Thursday, 2 October 2014 20:24 (nine years ago) link

halcyon is an excellent track, as is belfast, chime, etc but it doesnt gesture towards the sublime in the way that 444 does using the same fairly simple material

C21H23NO5 (nakhchivan), Thursday, 2 October 2014 20:30 (nine years ago) link

it's not their halcyon, it's their little fluffy clouds

Ƹ༑Ʒ (imago), Thursday, 2 October 2014 20:32 (nine years ago) link

Leaves on the Line off of Lego Feet is divine. And that's 1991 era shit. Ae have always been good. They also have never given a fuck.
