maybe won't have the same command over my emotional and listening life but this sure feels like the 1975 record of 2014

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 2 October 2014 20:33 (nine years ago) link

she has mentioned she's a fan of the 1975 before fyi.

is this available to hear for plebs?

uxorious gazumping (monotony), Thursday, 2 October 2014 21:26 (nine years ago) link

Comes out tuesday, but the pre-ordered cds were mailed a couple days ago.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 2 October 2014 21:29 (nine years ago) link

I imagine it will be on the internet within half an hour if it's not already.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 2 October 2014 21:30 (nine years ago) link

Rats. It didn't get delivered today.:'(

Johnny Fever, Friday, 3 October 2014 00:57 (nine years ago) link

oh good, my promo stream was exclusive for only about 12 hours, it's out there now

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 3 October 2014 13:45 (nine years ago) link

So I've played the album through about three times now...

1. I wish some of these songs weren't so melodically boring. I mean, they're okay, but it's just kind of stock pop circa 2014 in places.

2. Glory Days needs to be killed with fire.

3. I'm going to work on resequencing it to see if I can make it work better for me.

4. The first step in point 3 is removing Glory Days and adding Lovin' Start (which is inexcusably absent).

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 9 October 2014 02:01 (nine years ago) link

In case I didn't stress it enough, Glory Days is ass.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 9 October 2014 02:06 (nine years ago) link

Didn't really expect the pop singer with the personality of a Swiffer mop to put out anything other than stock pop

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Thursday, 9 October 2014 03:46 (nine years ago) link

Well that's just wrong.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 9 October 2014 04:40 (nine years ago) link

i like "glory days"

the one i hate is "better"

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 October 2014 04:41 (nine years ago) link

i think it's less melodically boring than aesthetically narrow. and badly sequenced but i'm not sure there's a good way to sequence this set of songs

totally 100 percent love "missing you," "california rain"

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 October 2014 04:42 (nine years ago) link

Better, Glory Days and All of Me are the ones I'd ditch. Then I'd throw on Lovin' Start. From there, I'd probably front-load the sequence with older familiar songs and make the second act all new material for me to get to know over an extended period of time.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 9 October 2014 05:55 (nine years ago) link

(I realize I've gone on record as hating it when Perpetua tries to do this with albums in the process of reviewing them, but I had a lot—probably too much—invested in this being better than it currently is.)

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 9 October 2014 05:57 (nine years ago) link

I wondered at Brad's 1975 ref until I heard "Glory Days".

Tim F, Thursday, 9 October 2014 07:52 (nine years ago) link

100% agree with Brad. Better is pretty bad, the pitch shifting sounds amateurish. Glory Days is so luxuriously laden with 80s clichés that I can't really hate it. & I love "All Of You" - it reminds me of crappy australian pop acts like tim & jean that i was into as an undergraduate.

However the slower songs are the real revelation. "Missing You" is a fkn knockout.

This album is a joy.

if she's given the chance to do another album, i hope it all sounds like "california rain".

New album on the way.

New song today, but actually an old Donna Lewis song from 1996 (actually, I have a hard time wrapping my head around the fact this song is 20 years old).

jeez she should tour with the 1975 already

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Friday, 3 June 2016 14:29 (seven years ago) link

imo this is a great cover, gentle in ways her debut failed to me

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Friday, 3 June 2016 14:34 (seven years ago) link

Talking about knowing what cover to pick. It's like this song was written for her.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 3 June 2016 14:34 (seven years ago) link

Apart from Somebody Loves You, which will probably always always be the best BW song, my other favorite is Lovin' Start which was left off the standard version of the album (and added on to the deluxe version). Gentle and dreamy in all the best ways.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 3 June 2016 14:36 (seven years ago) link

Hey thats good.

I like Missing You off the the debut

Spottie, Friday, 3 June 2016 19:11 (seven years ago) link

i kinda forgot this album existed until recently when i heard "Heartbreak Dream" in the closing credits of Pitch Perfect 2, that's a really good song.

some dude, Friday, 3 June 2016 19:48 (seven years ago) link

oh yeah that ones great

Spottie, Friday, 3 June 2016 20:44 (seven years ago) link

This cover is fine, but I never thought the original was all that. Like, every song on Take Me When You Go (as perfect a pop album as any that has been released this decade) is better than it.

rhymes with "blondie blast" (cryptosicko), Friday, 3 June 2016 20:48 (seven years ago) link

I've always liked the original, but the production on the BW version is fuller and sweepier in just the right amount.

Acoustic version is nice. Promo image was alarming.

her second single (on spotify) is also bad, worse than "human touch" i would venture. oh well we'll always have "somebody loves you" i guess

monotony, Friday, 3 February 2017 00:05 (seven years ago) link

might be ok but there's what feels like an interpolation of the chorus melody from fergie's "london bridge" that keeps popping up and ruining everything

monotony, Friday, 3 February 2017 00:06 (seven years ago) link

she's been charli xcx'd :(

maura, Friday, 3 February 2017 01:08 (seven years ago) link

My life would probably be better if I don't listen, but I'm going to anyway...

Okay, so, at its core, I don't find this as offensively bad as Human Touch was, but my god there are so many things going on over the top of it that it's just a car crash. Also, when it comes to melody writing, she's got a very tiny bag of tricks. This doesn't just sound like other people's songs. It sounds like other (better) Betty Who songs.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 3 February 2017 01:27 (seven years ago) link

MarkoP, Friday, 3 March 2017 16:51 (seven years ago) link

Figured it out. It was Treasure by Bruno Mars.

Based on the timestamp of my most recent post in this thread, I haven't listened to this shitpile since March 30th.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 15 August 2017 03:03 (six years ago) link

lol. maybe try again?

Spottie, Tuesday, 15 August 2017 03:11 (six years ago) link

I hit play on the You Can Cry Tomorrow video upthread because I mentioned it wasn't bad.

Objectively, it may not be, but I think I'm only madder now at how she's squandered the best qualities from her initial blast of songs.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 15 August 2017 03:14 (six years ago) link

(fwiw my praise for her first LP was rather muted as well, even though I started the thread)

The EP she put out recently (she's back to being independent) has a few gems: "Ignore Me" and "Just Thought You Should Know" particularly.

new album is pretty good! kind of patchy in the middle but "just thought you should know" is the best song she's ever done imo

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 21 February 2019 17:59 (five years ago) link

Solid album, nothing to dislike, but equally I can't get that excited about much of it. I picked out "Old Me" and "All This Woman" in addition to "Just Thought…".

I saw her a week ago playing a private event at a hotel in Boston with less than fifty people. I thought she was great, but I was pretty drunk. Closed with Somebody Loves You.
