Tim F, Friday, 10 October 2014 03:32 (nine years ago) link

my life can be divided into the time before i heard the instrumental sections in "settle down" and the time after

"You" is so bitchy.

"And it's not my fault that I've f***ed everybody here </humblebrag>"

Promise this isn't a brag.

Healy texted me the other day to say that you can get large chunks of the 1975's sound by listening to Hats by the Blue Nile. So I did. And he's right. The 1975 album is the chart version of Hats.

Unsettled defender (ithappens), Friday, 10 October 2014 09:31 (nine years ago) link

these guys were awesome live. they opened with "head.cars.bending" which i thought might not function live but it was massive. they played about half new songs, all of which sounded great, one of which kind of sounded like paramore's "ain't it fun" as performed by a slightly funkier blue nile, another ("settle down," i think) which gorgeously mined the same kind of gauzy fake u2 as "you"

But it makes me love them even more that the Blue Nile resemblance is entirely deliberate.

Tim F, Friday, 10 October 2014 09:53 (nine years ago) link

def cosign the gorging impulse, lost a few days to them again after brad's playlist

r|t|c, Friday, 10 October 2014 10:07 (nine years ago) link

xpost Ha! Didn't notice that! I recommended him AR Kane in return, giving his love of gauzy melancholy.

Unsettled defender (ithappens), Friday, 10 October 2014 10:29 (nine years ago) link

perhaps need to turn down the crossposting a notch now but the ar kaneness of the recent lil silva ep (https://play.spotify.com/album/5rkADFeXR3EZlifZ2wbnId) ('kimmy'!) was specifically what prompted the semi-joking upthread production recommendation

Given the release date of October 30, could Medicine be the track that's going to be on this?

Yes.

Unsettled defender (ithappens), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 12:22 (nine years ago) link

Just heard Medicine: it's rather lovely. A bit like third album Velvets produced by Trevor Horn.

Not bad. Might like it more if I didn't already associate that three-note phrase with NBC

one direction "change your ticket"

http://stealinstyles.tumblr.com/post/102563468890/change-your-ticket-four-deluxe

this song is so fucking good
and GOT to be produced by the 1975, right?

uberweiss, Thursday, 13 November 2014 23:25 (nine years ago) link

Wow it really is a 1975 song isn't it? I can hear Matt sing it in my head.

Tim F, Friday, 14 November 2014 10:17 (nine years ago) link

Dirty Hit denying 1975 involvement.

But I was right about Medicine, eh?

Unsettled defender (ithappens), Friday, 14 November 2014 10:55 (nine years ago) link

ah yeah it sounds just like "girls" lol

J0rdan S., Friday, 14 November 2014 15:24 (nine years ago) link

this is great tho

J0rdan S., Friday, 14 November 2014 15:27 (nine years ago) link

this is.... as good as any 1975 song? is that blasphemous?

J0rdan S., Friday, 14 November 2014 15:36 (nine years ago) link

It's really good, not sure if I like it as much as Heart Out, Robbers or Chocolate, but it's on par with Girls and Settle Down. If 1975 are not involved with this, then at least there's some degree of catching up here. I like the way they're channeling Scritti so much via 1975 it doesn't really sound like Scritti and totally 1975.

After not having cared that much for Take me home or Midnight Memories I suppose I'm mildly pumped up for this one.

cpl593H, Friday, 14 November 2014 16:17 (nine years ago) link

"Stockholm Syndrome" might be them too, sounds a lot like "Heart Out".

Tim F, Friday, 14 November 2014 19:45 (nine years ago) link

i can't stop listening to this

J0rdan S., Friday, 14 November 2014 20:35 (nine years ago) link

The 1975 are absolutely not involved in it in any way, nor with any other track on the record. The song Healy wrote was not used.

Unsettled defender (ithappens), Friday, 14 November 2014 21:14 (nine years ago) link

wait, is this band good? i assumed they were awful.

alpine static, Friday, 14 November 2014 22:15 (nine years ago) link

also do they ever NOT sell out a show? i pay attention to concert calendars in four cities around the country and every time they play any of them, they sell out weeks or months in advance.

alpine static, Friday, 14 November 2014 22:19 (nine years ago) link

read the whole thread!

no but seriously im not a dick like that (Spottie), Friday, 14 November 2014 22:22 (nine years ago) link

The answers to your questions are related.

Tim F, Friday, 14 November 2014 22:22 (nine years ago) link

If "change your ticket" is just a rip off then I'm even more impressed.

Tim F, Friday, 14 November 2014 22:23 (nine years ago) link

xpost i know, but you have to admit there are a lot of sketchy bands with very passionate, young female fanbases out there selling out everywhere they go. it's a thing right now, and i assumed - unfairly, i admit! - that that's what we were dealing with here.

i shall investigate! glad this thread popped up.

alpine static, Friday, 14 November 2014 22:26 (nine years ago) link

Actually that dynamic is involved as well to be fair.

Tim F, Friday, 14 November 2014 22:27 (nine years ago) link

Singer Matt Healey is like a bedraggled dog that the fans want to take home and run a bath for.

Tim F, Friday, 14 November 2014 22:28 (nine years ago) link

I hear some Tears for fears in Stockholm Syndrome too; who would have thought sophistipop would be making a comeback this good.

The last minute or so of Change your ticket, the instrumental part, is a very good Blue Nile via 1975 impression.
