I remember re-reading their greatest 100 games of all time article many times. iirc bomberman was ranked really high and Mario 64 might even have been #1 despite having just been released?

yeah I remember being astonished by the first screenshots of Unreal. I've evidently lost whatever sense of distinction I had back then coz now that image doesn't seem notably better than e.g. Mario 64.

I hated the look of 1st gen 3d games so much I entirely stopped console gaming after SNES. Mario 64 looked ok but Super Mario World was way more beautiful to look at.
