wanting to date within his race does not seem like it in no way could fit in with his post-pilgrimage outlook. there needn't be any "white people are devils" thinking behind it.
anyway this is all besides the point, really.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:25 (eighteen years ago) link

speaking as a not-white person, i can see common's pt 100%, as it applies to my own life. so does that make me a racist?

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:26 (eighteen years ago) link

no just un PC. you will not be invited to any parties thrown by urbane young white people. sorry.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:28 (eighteen years ago) link

I know what he's talking about but there's some of the best scratching I've heard in a long while on his single.

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:29 (eighteen years ago) link

I *don't* know... that should say.

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Oops, buy a ladder and get over it.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:32 (eighteen years ago) link

do you disagree with what i've said? perhaps you could formulate at least a smidgen of an argument rather than slinging vague putdowns as per usual.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:39 (eighteen years ago) link

You have this hobby horse about being un-pc...it's kind of irrelevant. What does not being invited to "parties thrown by urbane young white people" have to do with the topic?

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:42 (eighteen years ago) link

maybe it's because everyone is so obsessed with being inoffensive and PC?
it was a joke. think you can, just for a moment, not be the most negative person on the planet?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:45 (eighteen years ago) link

Yes, bring on another 10 million comments about what a renegade you are.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:48 (eighteen years ago) link

the only one talking about me is you. can one not criticize something they feel is a misguided, far-reaching societal obsession without you thinking they're patting themselves on the back for being a rebel?
so...back to common...

oops (Oops), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:53 (eighteen years ago) link

Forget renegade comments, am I the only one that thinks Common has really nice taste in various hats, i've seen him in more than one and thought "Damn, that's a nice hat!"

Don Rowlando (Sam Rowlands), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:53 (eighteen years ago) link

He does have nice hats, that is a good point.

Better taste in hats: Common or Mos Def?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 9 June 2005 18:00 (eighteen years ago) link

They've kinda got whole different styles. Common leans towards the crazy hippy fuzzy hats, Mos is more of a cowboy hat/beret/hat-genre-ist.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 9 June 2005 18:01 (eighteen years ago) link

Now you're onto something! Mos Def favours more wacky hats, whereas Common likes ones that actually would keep your head warm if the weather suddenly turned sour. I would like to see some more pictures of these two wearing hats, please.

Don Rowlando (Sam Rowlands), Thursday, 9 June 2005 18:03 (eighteen years ago) link

It's sort of like Jamiroqaui vs. Indiana Jones.

Common's hats - wacky AND functional

Mos Def - style/class trumps hat functionality

Mos Def looks quite the man about town. Still liking Common more on the hat front though, although when it comes to lyrics, I tip my hat (to keep with the theme) in Mos' direction.

"an icon, at one point in his life, would have agreed with Common on this question; therefore, the stance is great!"

I think anybody who says he (or she, for that matter) will fuck somebody of this or that race but not have a relationship with him/her is, social icon or no, a total pig. So, yes, oops: the sacred cow you raise was full of shit on this question. No: nothing wrong with having a preference; not saying that, before anybody gets they panties all knotted. Urges are urges! But "Not dated, no" (giggles)? Fuck that shit.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 9 June 2005 18:35 (eighteen years ago) link

i never said I thought the stance was great, or that malcolm having a similar one gives it validity. i said i thought he had reasons behind it, and that calling him a narrow-minded dimwit is unfair.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 9 June 2005 18:40 (eighteen years ago) link

eh, I agree with BN too. Common's stance doesn't seem particularly well-reasoned to me. It seems convoluted and rather transparently designed to justify his own weird sexual hang-ups.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 9 June 2005 18:42 (eighteen years ago) link

Is there any reason why sex must ONLY occur within the context of a relationship for it to be non-assholish on the man's part? OMG did I just write that?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 9 June 2005 18:42 (eighteen years ago) link

no, but having these "political" reasons for which ethnicities you will/will not have a relationship with, have sex with, etc. seems really fucking stupid and counterproductive to me.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 9 June 2005 18:46 (eighteen years ago) link

but common isn't you.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 9 June 2005 18:49 (eighteen years ago) link

oops also otm - "dimwit" unfair, "narrow-minded" quite accurate

I haven't given this serious thought, but on the face of it any political position that gives us a license to treat large segments of the population as objects AND TAKE PRIDE IN IT BECAUSE IT PROVES HOW DOWN AND CONSCIOUS AND SOULFUL WE ARE = dud

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 9 June 2005 18:49 (eighteen years ago) link

Having sex with someone you don't intend to have a relationship with is always treating that person like an object?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 9 June 2005 18:50 (eighteen years ago) link

"but common isn't you."

and thank god for that. If I was I would have to kill myself to atone for the horrible "Compared to What" Coke commercial atrocity.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 9 June 2005 18:52 (eighteen years ago) link

i just read it as him not wanting to be your stereotypical rich and famous black man with a white wife. i'm guessing he feels like it would be going against what he's all about. you don't have to agree with that in order to not insult him.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 9 June 2005 18:53 (eighteen years ago) link

white people! so progressive! not hung up on race one bit!

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 9 June 2005 18:54 (eighteen years ago) link

not hung up on sex, either, apparently!

vahid (vahid), Thursday, 9 June 2005 18:54 (eighteen years ago) link

hey vahid, i'm a white man who's not afraid to say that i'm hung up on race and hung up on sex, and the intersection of the two. i have a problem with what common says about white women because it makes me feel threatened and it makes me feel jealous, not for any "progressive" reason. i wish i could hear one black woman say that she only enjoys white men for the sex, then i could move on with my insecurities and just giggle with common when he says stuff like this.

markgreen, Thursday, 9 June 2005 19:00 (eighteen years ago) link

xpost to Dan

When the "someone you don't intend to have a relationship with" isn't in on the joke, then yes, it is. Not saying it doesn't happen, just that we shouldn't get to pat ourselves on the back when we do it.

When all parties are singing from the same hymnal, it is what it is. Totally agree re: sex sans relationship != de facto assholery.

I have no knowledge of Common's private life or dealings, and he may well be a super up-front, stand-up guy with whom everyone always knows what they're getting.

Nah, not dated (giggles) rings a little macho/creepy to my ear.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 9 June 2005 19:02 (eighteen years ago) link

Again, I can see why someone can have a compelling reason to date within their own race, but I can't see why someone would say with certainty they would NEVER date outside of it.

-- Vestigial Appendages, Esq. (doctorduc...) (webmail), June 9th, 2005 1:09 PM. (King Kobra) (later) (link)

so you can't see why malcolm x would've said with certainty he would never date outside his race?

-- oops

I really hate when people take shit outta context.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 9 June 2005 19:02 (eighteen years ago) link

vahid, I am an Asian guy and I also have issues. I get where Common is coming from. However I find myself agreeing with the poster who said that Asian girls with ponytails are crazy, in my experience it's true.

bob n0pe (bobnope), Thursday, 9 June 2005 19:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Admittedly, Common is not a dimwit, that's just me getting aggro 'cause I really hate this particular stance Common's copping - Dead Prez has a similar one, only it's "we let white girls suck our dicks but won't sleep with them"

Having sex with someone you don't intend to have a relationship with is always treating that person like an object?

No, Dan (though I think the question as to whether casual sex relationships are emotionally healthy is at the very least one worth asking), but there's something about saying "persons of this race are not good for relationships" that gives me the creeps. Because of American racial power dynamics, it doesn't work 100% for me to try and flip the script here, but wouldn't it strike you as yucky for, say, Clay Aiken to say: "I'll sleep with black girls, I love them and they're God's children, but I wouldn't have a relationship with one." Maybe that wouldn't make you say to yourself: "That Clay Aiken is one asshole cracker bastard," but it would me.

Perhaps I'll seem less strident if I said: I personally wouldn't sleep with a person if I already knew that I would not, under any circumstances, have a relationship with a person of their particular race. I can see how a justification for doing so might not necessarily be racist ("we're obviously the same species, the parts fit and we can have fun, but culturally we'd be too different to take it any futher than that") but even then I'd find it creepy.

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Thursday, 9 June 2005 19:08 (eighteen years ago) link

vahid, I am an Asian guy and I also have issues. I get where Common is coming from

yeah as if it's not TRANSPARENTLY OBVIOUS the "rasta" in common's first paragraph is obviously a POORLY-VEILED SUBSTITUTE FOR COMMON HIMSELF.
