I have an iPad 3 and want a new one for the lightening connector, and for it to run iOS 8 better. 8 is not very smooth for me, would be nice to have a device that it was more responsive on.

But really there is no way I'm upgrading, especially after having just spent so much money on 2 iphone 6's. We'll wait till next year.

tablets are good for lying on my couch and playing games

socki (s1ocki), Friday, 17 October 2014 18:34 (nine years ago) link

and as a spotify/whatever player i plug into my stereo

socki (s1ocki), Friday, 17 October 2014 18:34 (nine years ago) link

but unlike phones... i have an ipad 2 and i have verrrry little desire to upgrade

socki (s1ocki), Friday, 17 October 2014 18:35 (nine years ago) link

yosemite's given me back 8gb I didn't know I'd lost. Caches I guess?

i'm actively avoiding any kind of smartphone--i think the lack of a phone in a portable device is a feature for me, not a lack. and i can imagine a tablet getting a lot of use.

I dunno. (amateurist), Friday, 17 October 2014 18:48 (nine years ago) link

have a 16GB iPad 2 and use it every day. really want to upgrade for better screen, RAM and more storage space but can't really justify the cost to myself, especially with the basic version still being 16GB wtf.

Technically I think the lack of a phone in life is a bonus, but just not feasible.

Eric H., Friday, 17 October 2014 19:05 (nine years ago) link

well lack of a phone and lack of a smartphone are different things

I dunno. (amateurist), Friday, 17 October 2014 19:14 (nine years ago) link

is 16GB the RAM or storage space?

I dunno. (amateurist), Friday, 17 October 2014 19:14 (nine years ago) link

storage

I really can't fathom wanting a newer iPad for a long, long time if it didn't do something majorly new and impressive.

Ditto -- I have an iPad 1 (you have a 2 if it has a camera) and haven't yet felt moved to upgrade -- not even sure what a tablet COULD do that would surpass it, but Apple does have a way of surprising, so who knows?

Retina pretty boss for reading

I dunno I love my mini but maybe a 6+ would be almost as good? hate the idea of carrying something that big around though.

I have an ipad air and rarely use it. it just never seems to be in the right position for comfortable use.

what is bothering me abt spotlight is how it pops up in the middle of the screen. i used to use spotlight as a calculator, but now it obscures the numbers i am calculating off of. or i will be trying to cross-reference things i am searching for against something i have written in a document (like a long file name or something) and it obscures that when it pops up. and beyond practicality I just find it intrusive.

the late great, Friday, 17 October 2014 22:45 (nine years ago) link

it would not be a big deal if I could somehow grab it and drag it to a different part of the screen

the late great, Friday, 17 October 2014 22:50 (nine years ago) link

wow feeling yosemites flatness very chill

You can make this come over all System 6 by disabling transparency and increasing contrast. White menu bar back!

stet, Friday, 17 October 2014 23:16 (nine years ago) link

might disable transparency

lag∞n, Friday, 17 October 2014 23:43 (nine years ago) link

yosemite impressions
-don't like this font but i guess i'll get used to it
-hate this day-glo super flat dock, i came in w/10.5 so I'm used to the pseudo-3D crap
-also every app now is gonna redesigned flatter icons soon

Nhex, Saturday, 18 October 2014 02:43 (nine years ago) link

my biggest complaint is i don't like this new trash can, looks cheap

Clay, Saturday, 18 October 2014 02:56 (nine years ago) link

is swapping out system icons still a thing

MacOS updates have been getting steadily less exciting since Leopard.

Twist of Caliphate (Bob Six), Saturday, 18 October 2014 08:30 (nine years ago) link

Maybe when they finally make MacOS 11 it will be the exciting one.

Jeff, Saturday, 18 October 2014 11:28 (nine years ago) link

What does the dot under the application in the Dock mean now? Just that it was recently used OR it's open?

Nhex, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 05:02 (nine years ago) link

open

This is the kind of thing that could make Apple Pay really useful:

(not showing up in my app store searches yet for some reason)

idk anything that requires both merchant and customer adoption is going to have growth struggles, and will basically be a middleman once restaurants adopt EMV terminals (which are generally brought to the table).

Spirit of Match Game '76 (silby), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 17:38 (nine years ago) link

Turns out this uses the contactless stuff which is already everywhere in the UK, so it's off to a winner here

stet, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 17:39 (nine years ago) link

xpthe fact that the waiter can literally just drop the check off and leave and then you can pay and leave is pretty time-saving on both ends. Although I guess a reader isn't that much more time-consuming for the waiter.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 17:40 (nine years ago) link

Same tech as Octopus? xp

The US as the world's foremost financial power can be really backwards when it comes to moving money around

I guess a bunch of it is just structural inertia

, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 17:42 (nine years ago) link

do you guys just mean near-field communications?

ya those lil terminals thatre brought to the table (really terrible experience btw from a dining perspective imo) are everywhere in the world except USA, agree w hurting that the code on the check is a way better solution

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 17:48 (nine years ago) link

I see that OpenTable is going to support ApplePay, which means that many restaurants will be able to start using it soon.

schwantz, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 17:50 (nine years ago) link

be curious to see how it all plays out, obvs this stuff has to be universal to really work you cant have any sort of siloed platforms like square or apple play and have it achieve any sort of ubiquity, has to work for everyone regardless which type of phone or app theyre using

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 17:52 (nine years ago) link

prob end up w the banks/credit card companies owning the space once the technology gets sorted out
