idk anything that requires both merchant and customer adoption is going to have growth struggles, and will basically be a middleman once restaurants adopt EMV terminals (which are generally brought to the table).

Turns out this uses the contactless stuff which is already everywhere in the UK, so it's off to a winner here

xpthe fact that the waiter can literally just drop the check off and leave and then you can pay and leave is pretty time-saving on both ends. Although I guess a reader isn't that much more time-consuming for the waiter.

ya those lil terminals thatre brought to the table (really terrible experience btw from a dining perspective imo) are everywhere in the world except USA, agree w hurting that the code on the check is a way better solution

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 17:48 (nine years ago) link

I see that OpenTable is going to support ApplePay, which means that many restaurants will be able to start using it soon.

schwantz, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 17:50 (nine years ago) link

be curious to see how it all plays out, obvs this stuff has to be universal to really work you cant have any sort of siloed platforms like square or apple play and have it achieve any sort of ubiquity, has to work for everyone regardless which type of phone or app theyre using

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 17:52 (nine years ago) link

prob end up w the banks/credit card companies owning the space once the technology gets sorted out

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 17:53 (nine years ago) link

restaurants aren't really the prime use-case for NFC though? shaving seconds off a transaction is not really what it's about in a restaurant.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:31 (nine years ago) link

I disagree: waiter brings check, walks away, you pay it, waive him back, he walks away with it, you wait for him to come back so you can leave tip on your card, he comes back, you leave tip, you leave. Can easily be five minutes or more in a busy restaurant. That's not only the customer's time but time the table is tied up.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:33 (nine years ago) link

qr code on check cld shave like 15mins off!

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:33 (nine years ago) link

or more!

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:33 (nine years ago) link

also if it made it easy to split the check my lord!

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:34 (nine years ago) link

Like this blue sky thinking

, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:35 (nine years ago) link

most of those card machines have a way to input the tip directly, though, right? waiter brings machine, you stick card in, type PIN, enter tip amount, press enter, hand it back to the waiter, waiter waits a few seconds, receipt comes out, he hands it to you, done. doing that contactlessly doesn't really help.

contactless really comes into its own in a busy sandwich shop. in the UK it's already kind of weird when shops don't accept contactless cards.

that said, not sure why a phone would be easier than a card...

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:35 (nine years ago) link

fucking w those lil machines while the waiter hovers is such a major fn downer my lord what an unchill way to cap off a meal they shd pay u

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:43 (nine years ago) link

"would you like to split it folks or" *conversation about slitting the bill ensues*

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:44 (nine years ago) link

contrast with waiter sliding the bill onto the table "thanks a lot"

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:45 (nine years ago) link

otm

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:49 (nine years ago) link

those machines pair perfectly w/canadian passive aggression btw

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:52 (nine years ago) link

i prefer a machine to those assholes who order 10 drinks and then insist that everyone splits the bill equally

Nhex, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:52 (nine years ago) link

code on check can solve all these problems tho

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 18:54 (nine years ago) link

everyone scans the code, selects the dishes they ate, and its over

sounds chill, everyone tapping at their phones for awhile to round it all off

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 20:00 (nine years ago) link

that said i did not realize the part about QR codes, i guess that could be good

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 20:02 (nine years ago) link

but it has nothing to do with NFC afaict

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 20:06 (nine years ago) link

no that would just use the apple pay app, not the nfc thing.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 20:10 (nine years ago) link

its true it has nothing to do w nfc

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 20:10 (nine years ago) link

the technologies dont matter tho

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 20:10 (nine years ago) link

Honestly it's a lot more chill than "Okay, so you got the appetizers, and we didn't have drinks" or just having your boozehounds friends be like "So should we just split it evenly?"

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 20:12 (nine years ago) link

true but it's awesome when they bring that thing out, it's like you're living on battlestar galactica or something - "now be off with you"

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 21 October 2014 20:13 (nine years ago) link

lol

lag∞n, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 20:14 (nine years ago) link

Getting the check/paying at restaurants is long overdue for some sort of technology upgrade. Around here, it can add 20 minutes to getting out of the damn place. You would think it would be in the restaurant's best interest to turn over customers quicker.

I really just want robot servers.

Jeff, Tuesday, 21 October 2014 20:16 (nine years ago) link

I probably posted this here or in another thread, but my brother when he was a little little kid had what I thought was an ingenious idea: a restaurant where the kitchen is on the lower level, and the middle of each table has a sort of electronic dumbwaiter elevator with an animatronic puppet server -- it takes your order then goes down to the kitchen and gets it, then at the end gives you the check and takes your money.

It was a hot pot place

So you'd put in how much raw meat or fish or veggies or w/e you wanted, big order small order

Beer etc.

You could order throughout the meal

Pretty tight tbh
