Tricky that mix looks good but do you really like "Paranoia"? It always strikes me as being a less convincing first draft of "Sweat".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 18 July 2006 01:19 (seventeen years ago) link

my site is currently down because my hosting provider is having issues. it will probably be back up tomorrow.

i'm not responsible for speicher 30. "tricky disco" by tricky disco is indeed where my ILX/dj-ing pseudonym originates though. the kompakt guys cite the early bleep stuff as a formative influence so my guess is that's why it got the re-release on kompakt extra. check the mayer/thomas/voight group, forever sweet, as well.

oddly enough a certain michael wells was one of the creators of "tricky disco". coincidence? that song and the early greater than one, sweet exorcist and warp singles had a huge influence on my taste in music. there was post-detroit bleep and then sampling culture situationism! my mind reels down those recursive paths. the two greater than one albums and the singles are essential listening for anyone interested in the history of acid house, plunderphonics and sample/loop-based dance musics. i always admired the brazeness with which they sampled other artist's work. good stuff. to me it's less about influence than it is about pop and dj culture: music as the building block for music. maybe this isn't so interesting any more but back in the late 80s/early 90s it was a total revelation to me.

i like "paranoia" yeah. "sweat" is the hit which "paranoia" is the darker trackier side of. i like how the "narrator" of the track is basically reading spam emails. fits for an imaginary internet mix...

I LOVE this mix I made -- I still need to get the playlist together. It's about 40 minutes. Starts out with a song by ? on the girl groups boxed set Rhino put out last year -- apparently nobody knows who it is, but the producer who issued it attributed it to Marsha Gee. This mix has lots of children's stories, some songs by Lisa Germano, Marais & Miranda "Go Native", Folkways recordings of the sounds of Alaska, National Geographic bird sounds, some folk songs from children's records, a Deerhoof song and some avant weirdness and electronica mixed with bird songs. I hope you enjoy it. Let me know what you think.

Look for a mix into which a lot more effort went via Droid+Slug's ambitious, international, fortnightly 'Blogariddims' project, on 11 September. It'll likely be guest-blogged on Weareie blog, but it'll download to you automatically if you sign up for the B'riddims podcast, which I'd recommend. Great stuff so far, and what's coming looks just as top-shelf.

I've been working on this super screwed tape of west coast classics, screwing the music of my middle school and high school days into outer space. I hope you like it, I think it is a fun listen and probably very good in a car. In fact, if I was in California I would listen to it with my dude Steve in his car while we went to get tacos, and I wouldn't have made it, it would just exist. I made it for listening to in Steve's car.
