dame is so good but i was looking at his stats and for someone w his skills he doesnt get to the line enough whats up w that does he just not drive enough

lag∞n, Saturday, 15 November 2014 00:40 (nine years ago) link

he doesn't drive enough and isn't v good at selling contact. also he kinda has a reputation for never getting to the line and perception plays into this stuff a lot.

its just kinda shocking how bad he is at thinking about what the stats mean

elaborate (i think i might agree w/ you but am curious)

slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:17 (nine years ago) link

well measuring shooters league wide based on korvers constellation of shots is silly, those shots are the ones korver is good at! thats why he takes them! its like saying kyle korver is the best at being kyle korver, btw is it even clear from the article what hes talking about, does he just casually slide from the constellation data set to a general points per shot metric i cant tell

and then like just generally maybe some of the stuff hes saying is true but its just not very informative, he cldve dug deeper and like compared currys catch and shoot percentage to korvers, their % on open shots etc, but instead hes just all this guy is very efficient! cool i guess, its decontextualized to the point of just being a factoid

also the headline straight up says korver is the best shooter

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:30 (nine years ago) link

many of his pieces r even worse than this one conceptually tho

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:32 (nine years ago) link

there's a part in that article about how korver is the best shooter where he brings up a data point that implies the next best shooter is deandre jordan which either makes you question either what kinda data we're looking at or if the author is paying attention to how he's making his points

Clay, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:37 (nine years ago) link

like you can like math and all but you have to be able to critically assess your math to really have a viewpoint that isn't "wow I like math check it out"

Clay, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:38 (nine years ago) link

his articles kinda come of as him looking at one of his pretty charts and going oh and this part and this part and this part and then realizing that he shd somehow try to string those thoughts into an argument by saying efficiency

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:41 (nine years ago) link

also like he says efficiency but theres clearly some sort unmentioned floor as far as number of shots taken to qualify for the list of best shooters

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:43 (nine years ago) link

yea there's no nuance to it, like no control put out there against his hypothesis (the league average as a whole is too wide a swath of data to really serve as such). the easiest one would be as you said, someone like curry, who's often creating threes right away for himself off the dribble

title is prob the result of an editor tryna get optimal SEO juice outta that shit

slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:44 (nine years ago) link

also lol just checked and this does not include FTs! how convienent for kyle korver who only attempts 1.6 a game

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:46 (nine years ago) link

and those are from technical fouls

#wegonnabechampionship (Spottie), Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:47 (nine years ago) link

like i fully believe in sports stats and their proper implementation, etc. etc. but the literalism can be baffling, like for example you would much rather have marc gasol on yr team as center than deandre - even though deandre's FG% (like his number in this somewhat arbitrary metric) is higher - because whether gasol's percentage is lower or not he's inherently a more diverse shooter & offensive player

slothroprhymes, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:48 (nine years ago) link

yeah its a def forest for the trees type of situ, stats for stats sake

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:49 (nine years ago) link

turns out efficiency on an individual player level is a p quicksilver concept

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 21:50 (nine years ago) link

lol yeah i've been griping about goldsberry for a while. occasionally he'll come out with something worthwhile tho
