What about people who say: "I don't own a television, because I always watch tv programs on my computer, or occasionally my phone, so there's no real point in my owing yet another screen, unless it's so I can say I own a television, so as to avoid annoying all you thin-skinned folks who find this mere fact of my television non-ownership irritating."

I just added cable again. Every time I do it's a fun novelty for a little while and then I quickly wonder why I bothered -- basic cable doesn't even have that many NBA games televised and that's the only sport I watch with any regularity. It's such a howling abyss of people talking about open plan kitchens.

no TV in our house (he said, annoyingly? honestly?)
my bf hooked our computer up to a video projector which projects its desktop directly onto a big white wall, and we have thick black shades if we want to look at something during the day (tho we mostly don't do that)
works pretty well, with the exception of presidential debates (the only thing we go to a friend's house with a TV for, honestly- I just find the streams kinda crashy for those) and er honestly I am too busy w work and/or music and idgaf about TV

The other thing that always strikes me about cable when I add it again after not having it is how intense the bombardment of messages you are hit with feels at first when you have been away from it for a long time, just constant images of products and places you'd otherwise give no thought to, attitudes, ideas about lifestyle, etc.

Yeah but there's something about the visceral force of a loud television ad that you don't get on the internet or at least can easily avoid. Maybe it's more a visceral/aesthetic difference than an ideological one.

lol yes, it's really obnoxious and gross. anytime i go home to see my folks the TV is on all the fucking time and i get help but just feel really grossed out by all of it, the programs as much as the ads.
we have a tv and watch DVDs from netlix (including tv shows, usually years after they originally aired) and i love watching good films/shows but i think live network and cable TV is really pretty much a "vast wasteland." even when i go to a hotel and i get excited for a minute i tend to just flip through until i find some movie i've already seen and i might watch it for a few minutes and then get bored fast. cable is basically worthless imo when you can just watch all the actually good programming later via streaming or DVD. we are super into breaking bad right now and idgaf that i didn't get to see it live or that we are several years behind with everyone else, just like idgaf that i don't see a movie in the theatre if i can rent it at home a few months later
― marcos, Monday, 10 November 2014 17:34 (ten years ago) link
also i try to avoid internet sites that have that obnoxiousness of television, e.g. huffpost, clickbait sites, weather.com
― marcos, Monday, 10 November 2014 17:36 (ten years ago) link
there's something to be said for watching a show like breaking bad when it's huge, though. igaf.

We have a roku -- before that we would just hdmi cable the laptop into the TV, which is a minor yet annoying inconvenience to have every time you want to watch something. I use the roku for cable too -- the app organizes channels much better than the cable box.

i "cut the cord" - and i'm a HUGE TV guy believe me buster i was watchin guiding light w/my nanna when you were suckin on yr momma's titty - basically ditched $150 cable bill for netflix instant, amazon prime, and hulu+, and it's a pretty good combo, comes out to way less and at the very least i have to make a conscious CHOICE of what to watch and don't get sucked into real housewives marathons and shit like i used to

we are in that same situation. sports is where it hurts, though. also, hulu+ does not work.

NBA League Pass actually has a roku app, wonder if maybe cutting cable entirely and just paying for League Pass makes more economic sense -- they have a $150/season deal if you pick five teams, which is probably all I'd want.

roku is sorta annoying, i hate doing searches or anything remotely complex in that interface, and projectors + fans are LOUD ime.
chromecast is definitely the best way to do it. espn has a pretty dope app for iphone and it streams very well, the netflix and hbogo apps are great, the only problem is with hulu stuff (if you don't pay for +) but you can solve this by just casting from a browser window on a laptop

if I weren't on a cable contract I think I'd comfortably cut it now; as it is I t0rr3nt almost half the things I watch and I'd happily just pay $10 to hulu plus or whatever.

UVerse made me an insane deal where I got the highest package + Internet for the price of Internet alone because I use UVerse for my business phone/Internet. So I have all 450 channels and all the movie channels and 99% of my viewing is still via Netflix or Amazon Prime.

xxp - did they make you pay $200 for their technician to set up the cable box for you? Or does that vary by region?
― sarahell, Tuesday, 11 November 2014 02:44 (ten years ago) link
I've never had to pay for a tech for cable or AT&T. They say they charge to add more than one outlet but I've never run into that.
― Kiarostami bag (milo z), Tuesday, 11 November 2014 03:09 (ten years ago) link
here, they mandate you pay the $200 for the tech, apparently because when they let ppl do self-install, enough of them were dumb and did it wrong and had to have techs come out. I really had to swallow my pride on that one.
