Try flying less! (the environment and that) (mind you I'm flying home at Christmas but there are reasons)

gner's site was playing up as much as thetrainline last night, I got frustrated and gave up.

But thetrainline is where I usually book my (east coast) trips! It's not just for Virgin. I never specify which line, but I suppose if you put 'via Edinburgh' then it should work. Or just say you only want one change, if the west coast is making you change three times cause of engineering work.

I can't say I've experienced that, jed, but I do get a bit freaked out by the general indie-cool vibe of Mono sometimes. I'm like "You're fucking indie kids - you can't be all 'cool'. This is all wrong! It's like they tell me it is in America or something! Smile you twat!"

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 10 November 2005 20:59 (eighteen years ago) link

jed OTM, but utter uselessness of those bar monkeys is more than that. They all serve like it's their first night on the job. Befuddled expressions in place, they pick at random from the bar instead of sticking to one section --- which means they're always falling over each other; they seem surprised that they sell drinks:
"a pint of blanc please"
"a what?"
"a pint of blanc please"
"uhh okkaay"
And then when the money bit comes they look like scared little boys if you give them a credit card, or if it's cash they mill hopelessly around the till prodding the big buttons like 85-year-olds at a hospital WRVS trying to work their new espresso machine.

And to top it off, they use warm glasses fresh from the washer.

The best thing about Mono - knowing one or two of the bar staff who will see you and serve you quickly. And give you chilled glasses from the fridge. Different strokes.

Ally C (Ally C), Thursday, 10 November 2005 22:43 (eighteen years ago) link

So what you're saying is that you're becoming some kind of cunt?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 10 November 2005 22:58 (eighteen years ago) link

but that's true of any pub -- it's just that you can go in those pubs for the first time and not feel like you're witnessing When Barmen … Attack!

That blanc thing happened to some poor chump ahead of me at the crush on Saturday night. I stood for about five minutes watching various people get mauled in the apathy engine, and wandered off righteously angry. Er, and went back ten minutes later to buy a drink. Can't beat the man.

(Sorry if they're your friends though)

OK, if we go to Mono, I'm giving my money to Ally C and letting him go to the bar.

I take it we *are* going to Mono then, despite grumblings to the contrary. What time?

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 10 November 2005 23:48 (eighteen years ago) link

I am not 'becoming' a cunt. I have been a cunt for quite some time, now.

Ally C (Ally C), Friday, 11 November 2005 00:31 (eighteen years ago) link

If we go to Mono, we let Ally go to the bar and pay for us with his own money.

Mädchen (Madchen), Friday, 11 November 2005 06:55 (eighteen years ago) link

It's going to be a bit windy, I here.

Mädchen (Madchen), Friday, 11 November 2005 07:01 (eighteen years ago) link

In my defence, I have just woken up.

Mädchen (Madchen), Friday, 11 November 2005 07:07 (eighteen years ago) link

The bar staff in Mono are lovely. I know it can take ages to get served when there's a gig on, but then that's the case everywhere. Paul and everyone were really helpful and accomodating when we did the Beard 4 launch there. So nyaahh! ;)

Stew (stew s), Friday, 11 November 2005 08:15 (eighteen years ago) link

That's because your Beard magazine was a passport to indie scenesterism, Stew.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 11 November 2005 09:12 (eighteen years ago) link

lovely != efficient, stew :)

that said, i now get chilled glasses with a coating of ice on them. for some reason.

so, tonight. shall i just meet you all in koshkemeer at 8, then?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 11 November 2005 12:36 (eighteen years ago) link

OK, if we don't get blown off the bridge.

Nonsouthsiders: Mono any time before about 7.30pm?

Mädchen (Madchen), Friday, 11 November 2005 12:50 (eighteen years ago) link

what time are people going to mono? straight from work?

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 11 November 2005 13:15 (eighteen years ago) link

I'll be at Mono by 7, hopefully sooner. As long as Skypark doesn't get blown down that is.

stew (logged out), Friday, 11 November 2005 13:39 (eighteen years ago) link

I'll be there 6.15 or so.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 11 November 2005 13:40 (eighteen years ago) link

I guess I'll go ogle women in borders again

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 11 November 2005 13:44 (eighteen years ago) link

I leave work at 5.00 but want to have a bath or maybe a shower if time's short. I can't see us getting to Mono before 7pm, especially with Stet's tardy habits.

Mädchen (Madchen), Friday, 11 November 2005 14:12 (eighteen years ago) link

Are you two still infectious?

Alba (Alba), Friday, 11 November 2005 14:57 (eighteen years ago) link

I'll be in mono at some point. Not too sure when. No later than 7 I would imagine. I am also slightly handicapped by only knowing a couple of other people who are going. Would it be useful if I posted a photo of myself, if I can find one?

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 11 November 2005 15:28 (eighteen years ago) link

yes.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 11 November 2005 15:29 (eighteen years ago) link

Right, hang on.

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 11 November 2005 15:32 (eighteen years ago) link

if i try flying less, i won't be able to try glasgow for nye. environment loses out in the face of my unquenchable appetite for party.

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 11 November 2005 15:36 (eighteen years ago) link

you should change your name to mmmm.... ;)

jed_ (jed), Friday, 11 November 2005 15:38 (eighteen years ago) link

jed, are you coming?

I heard DFA are in town... anyone?

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 11 November 2005 16:05 (eighteen years ago) link

hmmm, were you at Dave's birthday thing at what used to be the Carnarvon, or am I confusing you with somebody else?

Mädchen (Madchen), Friday, 11 November 2005 16:48 (eighteen years ago) link

hmmm, if it wasn't for the fact i know i know you, if you see what i mean, i wouldn't recognise you at all. you look utterly rockin',

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 11 November 2005 16:49 (eighteen years ago) link

hmmm, I think that was an insult

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 11 November 2005 16:51 (eighteen years ago) link

no i am going to a birthday dinner.

who told you the DFA are in town?

jed_ (jed), Friday, 11 November 2005 17:46 (eighteen years ago) link

in my world, nothing rocks more than "rockin'".

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 11 November 2005 17:50 (eighteen years ago) link

Sigh, here I sit ready to leave, jacket on and quiff sharpened, yet Madchen's chattering on the phone to her sister and listening to De La Soul while futzing with make-up. What's a stet to do?

(We'll be late)

stet (stet), Friday, 11 November 2005 19:11 (eighteen years ago) link

you'll be kicked in the nuts.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 11 November 2005 19:27 (eighteen years ago) link

Get a room.

alext (alext), Friday, 11 November 2005 23:07 (eighteen years ago) link

Thank you Glasgow. My head hurts. You rock, you lot, you really do.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 12 November 2005 11:26 (eighteen years ago) link

bah. while you lot were off misbehavin, i was lolling around rejkevik alone with the cleanres like a moron while all my fellow passengers took advantage of the FREE LAYOVER TRIP TO THE BLUE LAGOON. duh! i am SUCH an idiot. btw, any requests for goods while i'm here (here being america, not iceland)? already on the milk duds, stetty boy.

dahlin (dahlin), Saturday, 12 November 2005 11:41 (eighteen years ago) link

dahlin: nothing less than dick cheney's head on a silver platter will do.

that was a top night. thank you all. sorry about forcing you to walk quarter of a mile in the pouring rain to the world's shuttest venue, but i'm sure you'll agree that the eventual choice was well worth it in the end. even though i've never, ever seen it before. actually, i'm not even sure it'll be there today when i look.

i trust everyone managed to find their way back north of the river again without being eaten by wolves/shot by bandits/etc?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Saturday, 12 November 2005 14:45 (eighteen years ago) link

I had a nice taxi driver who played Sam Cooke all the way home. When I say "had" I mean I did it with him.

Sorry if I faded as the evening wore on. I made the mistake of listening when Ally whispered his theories of why our lives are a pathetic sham and the case he made was convincing.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 12 November 2005 14:51 (eighteen years ago) link

Me and Hmmm managed to grab a taxi just outside Syxties. We didn't get any Sam Cooke. :(
Top night though. Nice to see the Bizarro World Glasgow (aka the South Side).

Stew (stew s), Saturday, 12 November 2005 15:26 (eighteen years ago) link

We had to wait sodding ages for a taxi. Then the cab firm phoned my back and said "your cab is outside". "I am outside" "Yeah, it's outside the Arches" "That's not much fucking use, blah, blah, blah".

I just read my emails and realised someone on the NPL mailing list had emailed to say "come to my jangle pop indie night on teh southside". It was very odd. But in a good way.

I feel quite broken today. I may have to pass on the Winchester.

In other news, I have just provisionally booked a table at Raeburns in Paisley for 10 people at 7pm on Friday 9th December. Doesn't have to be confirmed until the week before, but I thought with it being Christmas I would get in early - we can always change if that doesn't suit, but I thought I would take the early initiative. We can deal with it nearer the time.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 12 November 2005 15:44 (eighteen years ago) link

Thinking about it, it wasn't really very jangly at all.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 12 November 2005 15:46 (eighteen years ago) link

I have MEMORY LOSS.

Mädchen (Madchen), Saturday, 12 November 2005 17:53 (eighteen years ago) link

his theories of why our lives are a pathetic sham

are they the same as mine?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Saturday, 12 November 2005 17:59 (eighteen years ago) link

I just remembered THROWING TABLE MATS LIKE FRISBEES! And SETTING FIRE TO TABLES!

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 12 November 2005 18:00 (eighteen years ago) link

(I mean I just remembered *about* those things, not that I actually *did* them)

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 12 November 2005 18:02 (eighteen years ago) link

stet getting bollocked by the old woman in syxties was deeply amusing. i didn't know he did "contrite" as an emotion :)
