duke getting blown out by a team that lost at home to wofford

mookieproof, Sunday, 11 January 2015 20:23 (nine years ago) link

Kentucky just took out their frustrations of those last two tough road games on Missouri. They have just physically defensively dominated some clubs this year. They kind of remind me of the 90-91 UNLV club, they just seem huge and awesomely athletic.

I think UK could be beat, but you are going to have to have a good night shooting and stay even with them on the boards and turnovers. That is not an easy task if the Wildcats are imposing their will on defense.

That was so much fun. I really love Jerian Grant. He is so confident this year. And I'm always happy to see Jackson do well since we went to the same high school, where he played ball with my cousin.

It's strange to me too. But we're talking about praxis, man. (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 29 January 2015 03:04 (nine years ago) link

also good to see the pavilion get rowdy since it was a bit quiet when I was there during the students' winter break.

starting to feel like this 'beating duke' high will never end. it's dangerous because I didn't actually do anything productive or good in my own life.

is it just because i'm out of college and uconn is mediocre or is college basketball less popular now than it's ever been?

partly you, partly the conference reshuffling i'll guess

mookieproof, Thursday, 5 February 2015 02:34 (nine years ago) link

obviously by "ever been" you mean "your lifetime". It has slipped a bit compared to the last 5 years. But I don't think it's less popular than it was more than 5 years ago.

the 30 for 30 about the Big East is very good, and I'd imagine the end of the true Big East is indicative of something. I guess that's probably just that college football has grown at a larger clip than college basketball.

March Madness is still my favorite sport event of the year

It's strange to me too. But we're talking about praxis, man. (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 5 February 2015 02:39 (nine years ago) link

College hoops is the pits now! Can't stomach a full game. Can only watch like the last 5 minutes of a game anymore and even then I need it recorded to ffwd the inevitable foul/ft fest. March madness is still amazing especially the first weekend cos you can jump from close game to close game and you don't have to watch full stretches.

The shot clock is ridiculous.

Hm maybe that'll help but still only halfway there. Best thing about college hoops to me is that a full court press actually often works.

yeah I never properly call how that shit plays out - I assumed james young would be a top 10 pick solely on the basis of him dunking on the entirety of uconn in the last NCAA championship game

slothroprhymes, Tuesday, 7 April 2015 04:17 (nine years ago) link

So many bad calls that game is my takeaway. Fun first half.

#wegonnabechampionship (Spottie), Tuesday, 7 April 2015 04:24 (nine years ago) link

I hate to be the one griping about refs because his team lost but the officiating seemed particularly bad these last two games. Not just the usual where they're calling ticky tacky fouls on one end and "letting them play" on the other, but egregious missed calls, even after lengthy reviews. In the last game vs. UK this shit at least went both ways, but in the last five minutes of this one Winslow was basically untouchable, clearly steps out of bounds w/ the ball at one point and of course had the ball go off his fingertips in a really critical spot but somehow retained possession. Like Wisconsin didn't seem to be playing any different than they usually do but somehow Duke winds up in the double bonus with 9 minutes to play, as soon as Wisco got up by nine it seemed like they were whistling on every single Duke possession. Oh well. Great run Badgers anyway, its kinda been a historic year for college basketball and its been awesome watching what might have been the greatest Wisconsin team ever.

Abstinence Hawk (frogbs), Tuesday, 7 April 2015 10:54 (nine years ago) link

like how many times could Duke get the foul call by just putting their head down and driving into guys. ok I'm done.

Abstinence Hawk (frogbs), Tuesday, 7 April 2015 10:58 (nine years ago) link

the fingertips one is rough, but that is about the system in place -- the only way to tell definitively was that one camera angle in slomo & that is not what the refs were seeing. from every other angle it was p impossible to tell

duke got very aggressive when they went down 9, I did not think the foul calls were bad really either way

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 7 April 2015 11:14 (nine years ago) link

I can't see how, the ball stopped spinning when he touched it. Like I get that he barely touched it but I thought when you slow it down it's pretty clear. As for Winslow stepping out of bounds I understand that it's a hard call to make in real time but there's a ref like 2 feet away so it's kind of inexcusable.

Everything else is so subjective but in general I kinda think that elbowing a player in the face ought to be a charge (and not a defensive foul, as it was called) especially when Wisconsin was constantly getting hacked in the lane, as though they were going in slow motion as soon as they started driving. Duke got so many And-1s they were pretty much encouraged to just throw their arm out against the defender, that's almost never called an offensive foul but you do get block calls sometimes, IMO this is one of the worst things about basketball in general

Abstinence Hawk (frogbs), Tuesday, 7 April 2015 12:56 (nine years ago) link

i'm not going to claim the officiating was *good* (nor was it good in the wisconsin-kentucky game, at least the part i saw) but i don't think it was particularly slanted, either. duke's two best players* were in foul trouble the entire game, after all.

mookieproof, Tuesday, 7 April 2015 14:38 (nine years ago) link

Duke also made shots and that had little to do with the refs. But those two missed calls def deflated what would have been a more interesting end.

xp that's true but they wouldn't whistle a 5th on either and thus I think they both got away with some things. though I do concede that Okafor's 3rd was real sketchy. for the record I kinda suspect that Duke is better with him off the floor anyway.

But those two missed calls def deflated what would have been a more interesting end.

that's basically it isn't it? seemed all game like it was gonna come down to the last shot.

Abstinence Hawk (frogbs), Tuesday, 7 April 2015 15:07 (nine years ago) link

well you knocked off Kentucky, and that was great.

i love him, but it seemed like cbs told raftery 'you have to do all catch-phrases all the time in the final four'

also he isn't a priest or marquis or former president or something, and he hasn't been a coach since 1981. 42yo men don't need to refer to him as 'coach' all the damn time

even nantz seemed a little overamped -- hope he can ratchet it down to a respectful whisper for the tradition unlike any other

mookieproof, Tuesday, 7 April 2015 18:26 (nine years ago) link

my (g)listening wife was loling hard at raftery last night

not sure I heard "nyA leeetle Kyuussssss" last night though?

I don't think it's likely but patritos > duke > tiger winning the masters is the unholy trifecta that nantz has been dreaming abt his whole life prob

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 7 April 2015 18:30 (nine years ago) link

I was making dinner, so I missed about a third of the game, but I thought the officiating was very mediocre. The refs seemed like they got caught up in making a bad call on a close play, realizing it, then making another bad call the other way to make up for it, then feeling bad about that make-up call and shading the next call the other way, ad infinitum, so that close foul calls began to function like the possession arrow.

Giant Purple Wakerobin (Aimless), Tuesday, 7 April 2015 18:32 (nine years ago) link

nor '2-3 zone . . . withman-to-manprinciples!'

nah, nantz is from charlotte, u know he's a carolina fan

mookieproof, Tuesday, 7 April 2015 18:32 (nine years ago) link

I miss Gus

xps to crunch: lol, those three + a lakers NBA championship + a yankees world series would effectively guarantee evil's dominion over all bc all of the coaches/front offices involved have clearly sacrificed human lives on the altar of baal in the past & will again

(i don't follow the EPL but i'm guessing man united or arsenal would be the appropriate analogue for that league?)

slothroprhymes, Tuesday, 7 April 2015 18:36 (nine years ago) link

Tiger winning the Masters would be amazing right about now

frogbs, Tuesday, 7 April 2015 18:40 (nine years ago) link

Amazing due to its enormous improbability. Whatever drove Tiger's run to greatness, it seems totally broken and scattered to the winds now. He's a lost soul.

Giant Purple Wakerobin (Aimless), Tuesday, 7 April 2015 18:43 (nine years ago) link

I mostly agree with Joe Posnanski's theory on the matter, which is....he turned 35. not a lot of golfers having consistent success after that age. The fall from "he will definitely break Jack Nicklaus's record" to "he will probably never win another major again" is pretty crazy though
